Texas Tech’s Week 1 opener of the 2026 college football season came from Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock, TX on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. ET / 4:00 p.m. PT — the first game played under the stadium’s new name.
The No. 12 Red Raiders won 33-10 in the 11th meeting between the in-state programs, moving the all-time series to 8-3.
Will Hammond opened 14-for-14 and finished 26-of-33 for a career-high 298 yards in his fourth career start and his first since tearing an ACL against Oklahoma State in October 2025. Quinten Joyner, also back from a preseason ACL injury, scored on his first career carry as a Red Raider, and J’Koby Williams put up 141 all-purpose yards with a rushing touchdown and eight catches — the most by a Texas Tech running back since 2024. The scoreline reads closer than the game was: Texas Tech led 14-0 after a quarter and 17-3 at the half, then settled for Stone Harrington field goals, four of them, all made, from 23, 28, 33 and 45 yards. Malcolm Simmons’ 64-yard touchdown catch inside the final three minutes was the only offensive score after the first quarter. The defense was the headline: Texas Tech held an FCS opponent to 194 total yards and 2.6 yards a carry and kept Abilene Christian’s offense out of the end zone entirely, with Jamond Mathis posting a career-high 2.5 sacks in his Tech debut. The Wildcats’ only touchdown came on Alex Broome’s 98-yard kickoff return. A sellout crowd of 60,229 watched in 97-degree heat. You can stream Abilene Christian vs Texas Tech recaps on FOX One. Texas Tech leads this in-state series 8-3 after the 33-10 win on Sept. 5, 2026, the 11th meeting between the programs. The two had not played between 1949 and 2024, and the reunion was nearly a disaster for the Red Raiders — Texas Tech needed overtime to survive 52-51 in Lubbock on Aug. 31, 2024. The 2026 game was the second and final date on that two-game contract, and Texas Tech handled it very differently, holding Abilene Christian to 194 total yards and no offensive touchdown.
