Penn State scored 17 in the first quarter and never looked back. Rocco Becht, who followed Matt Campbell from Iowa State, went 13-of-18 for 271 yards and a career-high four touchdown passes without an interception — the first Penn State quarterback to throw four in a game since Drew Allar threw five at Maryland in 2023. Koby Howard caught six of them for a career-best 161 yards and a score, and Brett Eskildsen, Zay Robinson and Benjamin Brahmer each caught one too, the first time four different Nittany Lions scored through the air since 2024. The ground game was deliberately shared, with no back reaching 50 yards, and the defense did the rest under new coordinator D’Anton Lynn: Marshall managed 147 total yards, 44 of them rushing on 26 attempts, and converted one of 11 third downs. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson threw for 102 yards and was also the Herd’s leading rusher with 30. It was Penn State’s first season-opening shutout since a 52-0 win over Akron in 2017, its first shutout in a head coach’s debut since Dick Harlow beat Westminster 26-0 in 1915, and the third-largest margin in a Penn State coaching debut.
