Ohio State led 23-3 after three quarters and did not score again. Texas closed with three straight touchdown drives of 15, 13 and 12 plays, which ESPN Research says no team has done to finish a win in the past 15 years. Arch Manning's 3-yard pass to Ryan Wingo capped a 15-play, 91-yard drive in the opening minute of the fourth. Hollywood Smothers ran in 1-yard scores at the end of the next two, the second with 25 seconds left, and finished with 74 yards and two touchdowns. Manning completed 11 of his last 15 to finish 23-of-37 for 196 yards, going 8-of-11 for 83 in the fourth alone.

The turning point was Connor Hawkins hooking a 45-yard field goal with 4:16 left that would have made it 26-17. Julian Sayin threw for 278 yards and Jeremiah Smith caught eight for 164 and a touchdown, but Sayin was 5-of-16 after halftime and his final-play pass was intercepted.
