Purdue thought it had won. Carlos Hernandez was originally ruled short on fourth-and-15 in the second overtime, the call was overturned on review, and two plays later Gio Lopez ran in a 3-yard touchdown and then the two-point conversion that decided it. Hernandez caught six for 88, including that 15-yard fourth-down reception. Wake Forest led 23-13 with 9:13 left in regulation before Fame Ijeboi's 7-yard run cut it to 23-20 and Jacobo Echeverria Lozano's 20-yard field goal on the final play of the fourth forced overtime. Ijeboi ran for 114 yards and three touchdowns, the last a 3-yarder that put Purdue up 36-30 in the second overtime before its two-point try failed. Ryan Browne was 32-of-43 for a career-high 329 yards. Wake Forest had three sacks and eight tackles for loss, with Aiden Hall and Vincent Firenze each posting 11 tackles.

Purdue leads this series 4-2 across six meetings, none of them a bowl game. The first was Oct. 19, 1968, a 28-27 Purdue win in West Lafayette, followed by 26-17 in 1977 and 14-7 in 1978. Wake Forest's first win came on Sept. 21, 2002, a 24-21 result, also at Ross-Ade.
Purdue took the next one 16-10 on Sept. 13, 2003 at Groves Stadium in Winston-Salem, against a Wake Forest team ranked 20th at the time. Then came a 23-year gap, ended by Wake Forest's 38-36 double-overtime win at Ross-Ade on Sept. 12, 2026. That makes five of the six meetings in West Lafayette, with the return trip to Winston-Salem set for 2027, and both Wake Forest wins have come at Ross-Ade.
