Neither team scored in the first half. Wayne Knight then scored three times, an 8-yard run in the third quarter and 7- and 36-yarders in the fourth, finishing with 97 yards on 13 carries - his second straight three-touchdown game after doing the same in the opener at California. Jaivian Thomas added a 1-yard score between them, set up by Jalen Woods' first career interception at the SDSU 23. Woods had nine tackles and a sack.

Nico Iamaleava went 14-of-22 for 151 yards and was intercepted in the end zone by Mike Lindsay after UCLA reached the 2 in the second quarter. San Diego State had only two plays past midfield until late in the second half, got on the board with a 46-yard Cooper DiLeva field goal to trail 7-3, and did not score a touchdown until Jayden Denegal found Jackson Ford for 19 yards with 2:28 left. It was UCLA's home opener under new coach Bob Chesney, who showed his players a video of the Rose Bowl's greatest moments that morning. Attendance was 31,973.

UCLA leads this series 23-1-1 after 25 meetings. The first came on Oct. 7, 1922, a 25-6 UCLA win, and the lone tie was 13-13 at Balboa Stadium on Nov. 15, 1924. The Bruins then won 19 straight.

San Diego State's single win came at the Rose Bowl in 2019, a 23-14 result that ended the streak with Ryan Agnew throwing for 293 yards and Kobe Smith catching seven for 131. The Aztecs had been 0-21-1 against UCLA going in. The Bruins took the next meeting 35-10 on Sept. 9, 2023, played at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego rather than Pasadena, and won the 2026 game 28-10 back at the Rose Bowl.
