Abu Sama III ran 72 yards for a touchdown on the first snap of the game, his first score in a Wisconsin uniform after transferring from Iowa State, and had 100 yards in the first five minutes on three carries. He finished with 107 on eight. Gavin Lahm kicked field goals of 30, 49 and 51 yards, the last a career high that made it 23-6 with 2:30 left in the half.

Carson Van Dinter blocked a punt, the second straight game in which Wisconsin has blocked one. Colton Joseph went 12-of-22 for 173 yards and a touchdown, Tyrell Henry caught four for 91, and Cooper Catalano made 13 tackles. Western Illinois got all nine of its points from Culkin field goals of 27, 27 and 34 yards, had a third-quarter touchdown wiped out by a holding penalty, and took six penalties for 50 yards. It was Wisconsin's 29th consecutive home-opener win over a non-conference opponent, a streak dating to 1995. The Badgers were favored by 42.5 at kickoff.

The 2014 meeting produced the one statistical footnote in Western Illinois' favor. The Leathernecks held Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon to 38 yards on 17 carries, the only time that season he was kept under 120 yards, on his way to finishing as the Heisman Trophy runner-up.
