Arizona State and Kansas have played only once, in 2024, Arizona State's first season as a Big 12 member, and the Sun Devils won it. The programs had no shared history before realignment brought them into the same conference, which makes this the second meeting in three years after none in the previous century of football at either school.

The setting is what will be remembered. The Union Jack Classic is the first college football game staged at Wembley Stadium, and the Big 12 has committed to a multi-year run of games in London under commissioner Brett Yormark. Kansas is the designated home team. American football at Wembley is not new — the NFL has played there regularly since 2007 and staged an exhibition as far back as 1988 - but no FBS programs had met there until now.
