Maryland leads this series 17-15 across 32 meetings dating to 1919, which is about as close as a century-old series gets. Maryland has taken the two most recent: a 54-10 win in the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium, and a 27-24 upset in Blacksburg in 2013 that was the last regular-season meeting before this one.

The two were border rivals for decades in the ACC, a conference Maryland belonged to from its founding in 1953 until leaving for the Big Ten in 2014. That departure is why a fixture this old went 13 years between regular-season games, and why Saturday is the first of four scheduled meetings running through 2029.

Virginia Tech won the 2026 meeting 35-26 on Sept. 19 in College Park, the first of four scheduled meetings through 2029, levelling the all-time series at 17-16.
