Purdue has never beaten UCLA. Five meetings, no wins, a record of 0-3-2 that begins with a 20-6 loss in West Lafayette in 1950 to the 18th-ranked Bruins. Then came a strange two-year run at the end of the decade: a scoreless tie at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1959, which remains the last 0-0 game in Purdue history, followed by a 27-27 deadlock the next season against a UCLA side quarterbacked by future NFL standout Billy Kilmer.

The series resumed in 1979, and UCLA won both of those meetings. Fifth-ranked Purdue was beaten 31-21 at the Coliseum in what remains the warmest night game in Purdue history at 93 degrees, played under a smog alert. The following year Freeman McNeil, later an NFL All-Pro, ran Purdue over 23-14 at Ross-Ade. Terry Donahue's UCLA teams handed the Boilermakers two of the five losses Purdue suffered across the whole of 1979 and 1980.
