Michigan leads this series 78-25-3 across 106 meetings, and the winner takes the Little Brown Jug, the oldest trophy in college football. The series opened on Oct. 17, 1892 with a 14-6 Minnesota win in Minneapolis. The jug itself dates to 1903, when Michigan left an empty earthenware water jug behind in the visitors' locker room after a 6-6 tie. Minnesota custodian Oscar Munson found it and athletic director Louis "Doc" Cooke painted it brown and inscribed it "Michigan Jug, Captured by Oscar October 31, 1903," writing Minnesota's 6 considerably larger than Michigan's. When the teams next met in 1909, Cooke's message to Michigan was that they could have the jug back if they won. They did.
