Algeria vs Austria World Cup History

Algeria and Austria have met once before in the FIFA World Cup™, with Austria winning 2–0 in the group stage of the 1982 tournament in Spain. That match was part of one of the most controversial groups in World Cup history, which also included West Germany and Chile. Despite Algeria winning two matches, including a historic victory over West Germany, they were eliminated following the infamous "Disgrace of Gijón," a result between West Germany and Austria that allowed both European teams to advance. The events of that tournament led FIFA to change its rules so final group matches are played simultaneously, adding lasting significance to Algeria's only World Cup meeting with Austria.
