Meteorologist Ian Oliver explains "ridge riders" – powerful storm complexes that strike the same places day after day in the summertime. He attributes this phenomenon to a strong area of high pressure, often called a bubble or dome, of hot and stable air that parks itself across the South. While those stuck under the ridge experience hot, nasty, and muggy conditions with little rain, the periphery of this high-pressure system is where repeated severe storms lead to flood threats.
