Episode Recaps

Episode 1 - 9 / 09 /2009

So You Think You Can Dance has experienced "5 summers, 5 seasons, 5 champions, and now we're doing it in the fall!" Welcome...to So You Think You Can Dance - Season 6! Before continuing the Season 6 recap, I have just one question - Do you think David "Sex" Soller will return for yet another season of auditions?

For the sixth season of Dance, the show traveled to New Orleans, Boston, Atlanta, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles. The recipe for the perfect dancer this fall is strength + personality + technique.

The first audition stop was in Los Angeles, the "Entertainment Capital of the World." Sitting at the judges' table were Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Adam Shankman.

During hometown auditions, each contestant performs a solo in front of the judges. The great dancers get sent to the next round of auditions in Las Vegas. The not so great "dancers" will go straight home, and if the judges are on the fence, the dancers will stick around and perform choreography led by Season 3 contestants Anya and Pasha.

Kicking off Season 6 auditions was Cole Clemens. Cole has a buzz cut on one side of his head and a Mohawk on the other. Nigel called for the producers to "cue music," but there was no music for Cole's performance. Instead, he chanted "shatter" and grabbed his head dramatically. Mary tried to keep from laughing and talked about how unusual the performance was. Cole will not be going to Vegas for the next round of auditions.

Mollee Gray is from Utah and was a dancer in all three High School Musical films. She wasn't getting a lot of auditions in Utah so she moved to California with her family to pursue her dance career. Mollee leaped and flipped across the dance floor. Adam was a huge fan, and loved her smile and energy. Mary noticed Mollee's amazing potential. Nigel thought her routine was very manic when she was dancing, and he wants her personality to come through more. Mollee received the first ticket to Vegas.

Ballet dancer David Hovhannisyan, returning hopeful Amanda Kirby, and Brandon Dumlao wowed the judges and all three are on their way to Vegas.

Ryan Kasprzak and Bianca Revel, two tap dancers, reunited in line outside L.A.'s Orpheum Theatre. Ryan is Season 5 finalist Evan Kasprzak's older brother, and he lost the final spot in the Top 20 to his brother last season. Always optimistic, Ryan called himself "America's 21st Favorite Dancer" and is back to claim a spot in this season's Top 20. Bianca made it to Vegas week last year. After she got cut she said she would not come back for another season. Realizing she's no quitter, Bianca now says she's going to keep trying until she makes it. Ryan was up first and hopes to be the first tap dancer on So You Think You Can Dance to make the Top 20. Last year he auditioned with a whoopee cushion, and this year he's using words and snaps and his extraordinary talent. Adam Shankman gave him a standing ovation and said, "You're not a dancer, you're a freakin' artist." He said it was the best audition on the show. Nigel called Ryan's performance "one of the most unique, beautiful auditions we've ever had." After such rave reviews, Ryan is on his way to Vegas. Bianca took the stage next, and Nigel suggested that she battles Ryan. The two tappers happily agreed after informing the judges that tap dance battling is known as "trading." After a fun session of trading between two highly skilled tap dancers, Adam was totally speechless. "This must be the most fun I've had on the show," Adam announced. Bianca will be tapping all the way to the airport because she's heading to Vegas.

The last dancer of the day is a young man who wants to produce a film. His name is Christopher Aguilar and he flipped onto the stage but literally fell short in completing his tumbling pass. He performed to "All That Jazz" and got the judges into the song, but not into his dance. The judges didn't think he's a strong enough dancer, so Christopher's journey ended in L.A.

A group of dancers performed choreography with Anya and Pasha at the end of the day, which allowed for nine additional dancers through to Vegas week.

The second day of auditions in L.A. began with Amber Williams, a young lady with a mother who became paralyzed. Amber soared across the stage. Nigel loved how light she was on her feet, but he wants to see more performance in her face. Amber is through to Vegas, and hugged the judges and her supportive mom.

Alexie Agdeppa and Paula van Oppen are two strong dancers who the judges sent straight to Vegas.

Christina Santana is a salsa dancer and has a partner that she dragged to auditions to assist her. She did some tricky floor work and then stood up and incorporated some pop-locking moves into her salsa routine. After some difficult "pot stirs" and stating that she can also dance ballet, jazz, and belly dancing, Nigel was happy to present Christina with a ticket. She said this victory is for her mom, her sister, and her dad who is in heaven.

Some interesting characters came out to try some tricks and turns of their own, but the judges weren't won over by any of them.

Phillip Attmore is another tap dancer auditioning in Los Angeles. He was roommates with Ryan Kasprzak when they were on tour with Fosse. He revealed that Ryan has a happy face on his bum, and Cat asked Phillip to draw it for her. Nigel thought his routine was superb, and he deemed Season 6 the year of the tappers. Mary hopes that Phillip makes it all the way, and Adam thought the performance was clean and effortless.

At the end of day two in L.A., choreography sent an additional ten dancers to Vegas.

Next week the show heads to Arizona for the first time, hitting up Phoenix.

Episode 2 - 9 / 16 / 2009

So You Think You Dance has traveled from Los Angeles to Phoenix, a city where the show has never auditioned dancers before. Arriving in the desert were Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and guest judge Mia Michaels.

Kicking off auditions in Arizona were Brandon "Shorty" Smallwood and Demetrio "Biggie" Bargas. They're an odd couple, but seem to get along great. It took them 19 hours to get to Arizona from Oklahoma because their short cut took them into the backwoods with deer and elk. Shorty said they are "two clowns who love to dance."

When Shorty and Biggie took the stage, they performed some Hip-Hop and Pop-Locking moves, and they really cracked the judges up. Nigel even said, "I didn't know anyone who watched that and didn't enjoy that." The judges were entertained enough to send Brandon and Demetrio to choreography.

Sasha Mallory auditioned for Season 4 and she's back for Season 6. Her family is at auditions with her this time, so she feels more confident and is grateful for their support. Sasha performed a contemporary routine with a folding chair and a flower. Mia thought it was really strong and that Sasha did a great job using the stage. Mary began to speak and Sasha broke down upon hearing such positive critiques. She won over all three judges and is headed to Vegas!

Katie Muth impressed Nigel with her "performance and technique," and the judges told Ellie Soto she's very strong, very dynamic, and has lots of personality. Both girls are going straight to Las Vegas for the final round of auditions.

Allison Becker was diagnosed with spinal meningitis at 16 months old and was left deaf by the disease. Despite being hearing impaired, she can feel music and dance to it. Allison took the stage and performed a solid routine. Nigel signed that he loves her, and discovered that Allison can also read lips. He then explained to Allison that "the passion is there, but the technique isn't quite there." Allison's dancing, paired with Mary's personal family history with hearing loss, reduced Mary to tears. Mia asked Allison what inspires her to dance, because Mia said music inspires her. Allison said it is music that inspires her too, but she just hears it in a different way. The judges happily sent Allison to choreography.

Willem de Vries and Jacob Jason are same-sex ballroom dancers. The pair met in line at Season 2 auditions and danced together while waiting for their turn to audition. They made such a good couple, that now Willem and Jacob are same-sex ballroom dance champions who are auditioning for Dance because they want to show that there is a world of same-sex dancers out there. When they faced the judges after their performance, Jacob broke down and talked about being young and open in the gay community, and his words made Mia cry. Mary appreciated the dancers' great lines and technique. Mia said she celebrates their courage to express themselves. Nigel thanked the duo for proving that same-sex dancing can be masculine. He wanted to see them dance with women in choreography. Willem said that it should be no problem because he and Jacob like to dance with girls too.

Jonathan Noronha skipped around the stage with sticks and dropped one of them. His routine was humorous and he even spelled "disco" using handcrafted posters during his dance, and the "o" in the word was a picture of Mary's face. It's hard to categorize what genre of dance this was. Nigel was happy that Jonathan came out and entertained everyone, but his dancing was not strong enough for the show.

At the end of day one, 30 contestants met Season 3 contestants Anya and Pasha in choreography. Demetrio couldn't keep up with the steps, so he walked off stage and quit. After an hour of learning choreography, the remaining dancers performed for the judges. Brandon will be joining his pal Demetrio on the long road to Tulsa, Oklahoma, but Allison, Jacob, Willem, and 12 other dancers are going to Vegas.

The second day of Phoenix auditions began with Jarvis Johnson, a young man who is an incessant screamer and a big ball of energy. He's very, VERY, excited to be at auditions. What a way to wake up the judges at the start of day two! Jarvis took the stage and thumped his back on the floor intentionally, danced out of his shoes, and smacked his own booty. Nigel said that Jarvis is a great entertainer, but not a great dancer. Mia said no to choreography, but Mary said yes. The decision was up to Nigel and he allowed Jarvis to go to choreography.

Brandon Gordon and Nicole Peterson are about a foot and a half apart in height and were dressed a little bizarrely, which cued the "strange dancers" montage.

Hoping for some normalcy on stage, the judges looked to Kelsey White. Kelsey performed a contemporary routine, and when she finished the judges asked if she's ever been abducted by aliens (like the dancers before her seemed to have been) and she said "once." This caused Nigel to flee the theater, but Kelsey was sent to choreography.

Jonathan "Legacy" Perez is a B-boy with personality and energy. When he was 15 years old, Legacy was inspired to break dance after he saw people breaking at a roller skating rink, and then he learned how to dance from the streets. He summed it up best when he said, "I love what I do and do what I love." Legacy stepped onto the stage and pulled off some amazing spins on his back and head. He has great control over his body. When he faced the judges for feedback, Mia called him "stupid," which is actually a good thing. Legacy is going straight to Vegas, and Nigel is curious to see what other styles he can pull off.

At the end of day two in Phoenix, 22 dancers were sent to choreography. Jarvis collapsed while learning the counts, and Cat Deeley and the paramedics attended to him. Unfortunately, Jarvis wasn't ready for Season 6 of SYTYCD. After the remaining 21 dancers performed for the judges, Kelsey didn't make it, but the judges would like to see her back next season. Five dancers out of the 22 shimmied away with plane tickets to Vegas.

Next week So You Think You Can Dance heads east to Boston.

Episode 3 - 9/23/09

So You Think You Can Dance left the Wild West and traveled to Boston for the third audition city. The guest judge joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy in Boston was Emmy winning choreographer Tyce Diorio.

The first person to audition in Boston was a plaid pant aficionado. Teddy Tedholm did a good job cracking Mary up and amusing Nigel and Tyce. He chose to dance to the Jason Mraz song that Jeanine and Jason danced to last season. Nigel thought it was a great performance. Mary couldn't decide if he was crazy or brilliant so she went with "crazy brilliant." Tyce thought he was unique like his pants. Teddy is off to Vegas!

Jean Lloret doesn't have any training, but he landed a back flip off a brick wall. He makes Mary scream when he did this insane slow motion body twist on the floor. When the music stops, the three judges jump up and hand Jean a ticket to Vegas - without any critiques or comments!

Kimara Wood performed a strong routine and is headed to Vegas.

An ice cream scooper named Channing Cooke did a tumbling pass in the sand and made it look easy. On stage in Boston, Channing channeled her energy into a contemporary number. Nigel noticed her tomboy nature and Channing showed off her muscles and a Thriller move. Mary loved the performance, and so did Tyce. The judges want to see more from her and send her to choreography.

Ryan Casey used to be tiny but now he's 6'8" and he even makes Cat look short. Despite his length, this tap dancer had good control of his "educated ankles" according to Nigel, who also mentioned that he could pick up his partner with one hand. The judges sent Ryan to choreography.

Russell Ferguson is a krumper, and no krumpers have ever made it to Vegas. Nigel quoted Lil C and called Russell "buck." Tyce called it "filthy and dirty in all the right ways." The three judges send Russell to choreography.

Fabrizio "Breeze" Jenkins is a pop locker who was a ten pound baby. Although he's still larger than the average dancer, he doesn't hold anything back on the dance floor. Breeze fessed up to falling over on the floor and making it look like part of his routine. Tyce said that Breeze could be really good if he trains. In a vote of 2 to 1, Breeze is headed to choreography.

Anya and Pasha worked with the dancers in choreography. Breeze had to quit due to an ankle injury. Ryan was sent home, but Channing is headed to Vegas along with Russell and 8 other dancers.

A married couple auditioned together with a ballroom routine. Karen and Matthew Hauer performed a strong and steamy number on stage. Mary called Karen "one hot tamale" and compared her to Jennifer Lopez. The three judges were unanimous and sent them both to Vegas.

Gene Bersten is a Latin dancer who performed alone. He swiveled his hips and worked the dance floor. Mary and Tyce liked his dancing, but thought his eyebrows did too much dancing of their own. The judges sent Gene to choreography.

Paul Magliato wore extremely tight pants and performed an interpretive dance to Coldplay's "Viva La Vida." Since Paul is 46 years old, he is ineligible to move on in the competition.

After a montage of bad dancers, Tyce's alter-ego, Dr. Evil, emerged.

Kevin "K'Bez" Hunte auditioned a few seasons ago, and believes he's back for a reason. He performed a hip hop dance and told the judges he's trained in contemporary since his last audition. The judges liked K'Bez's hip hop moves, but they think the bar has been raised since he auditioned a few seasons ago. In addition, they would have liked to see him perform some of the contemporary moves he learned. Ultimately, the judges agreed to send K'Bez to choreography.

After an hour of choreography, K'Bez, Gene, and 21 other dancers have tickets to Las Vegas.

Tune in next week for auditions in Atlanta.

Episode 4 - 09 / 29 / 2009

The next stop for So You Think You Can Dance auditions was Atlanta, Georgia. Would the dancing be sizzling in Hotlanta? Joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy in the south was master krumper and vocabulary aficionado, Lil C.

The first dancer to take the stage in Atlanta was Billy Bell. This young man started dancing only 5 years ago, after being inspired by a hip hop show. Billy instantly enrolled in hip hop classes, but was awful at that style of dance. Determined to become a dancer at 14 years old, Billy enrolled in ballet, tap, and several other styles of dance. The classes, paired with Billy's persistence, seemed to have paid off. Nigel thought Billy had great legs and technique, except that he needs to watch his arched back and hands during pirouettes. The judges decided that it's a "no for choreography [a pause long enough to worry Billy], you're going straight to Vegas!" And with that, Atlanta auditions were off to a positive start.

Amber Jackson is an 18 year old with a petite, yet muscular, body that supports her strong arabesques. Nigel said her technique is tremendous, but she doesn't have a good performance quality - she stared out into space instead of connecting with the audience. Lil C said it's a shame she can dance so well yet manage to bore the audience with her performance. Since her gorgeous technique can't be denied, Amber is going to choreography, where she will have a second chance to show her personality.

There was a trend of a lack of performance from the dancers that followed Amber. As Nigel said in a recent press call, he's looking for personality and technique.

Travis Dennison was the microphone man for the Georgia Bulldogs, so he probably has a lot of spirit and personality. He auditioned for The Wade Robson Project and planned on showing what Wade taught him during his SYTYCD audition. Travis is 30 yeas old, so this is his last chance to make the show before he's too old. He performed a quick hip hop routine and reminded me of what it would look like if Adam Shankman performed hip hop. When Travis went over to the judges after his performance, Nigel asked Travis if he's related to Adam Shankman. Haha! Nigel called the routine "social fun" and Mary and Lil C were entertained, but it's not good enough for him to advance in the competition.

Jamal Jackson impressed the judges with his lyrical routine that had elements of African dance. He did a great job showing off his strength. Victor Smalley's contemporary routine wowed the judges, and Mary described his dance as "explosive, dynamic, and controlled." Victor and Jamal each got a plane ticket to Vegas.

The last people to audition on day one in Atlanta are Anthony and Antwain Hart. These twins auditioned for Season 4 of SYTYCD. At that audition, Antwain was better than Anthony, who was originally dismissed. However, Antwain stood up for Anthony and the two ultimately made it to Vegas. The twins traded in their dress shirts and sweater vests of 2008 for t-shirts and dressy vests in 2009. Since the brothers shined when they auditioned together for Season 4 more than when they auditioned separately, the brothers auditioned together for Season 6 with a hip hop routine that included some pop locking. Nigel said that Antwain threw in stuff he's never seen before. Nigel, Mary, and Lil C saw improvement in the Hart brothers and also said they're likable. The judges agreed that choreography would be a good way to find out what else the Hart brothers can bring to the table.

After an hour of choreography with Season 3's Anya and Pasha, the Season 6 hopefuls performed for the judges. Amber showed more personality, so she is going to Vegas. Anthony is headed to Vegas, but surprisingly, Antwain is not. In total, 14 people from day one in Atlanta are going to roll the dice in Vegas.

On day two of Atlanta auditions we met Matthew "Boogie Links" Pollard. He spent his time waiting for his turn to audition by sweet talking the ladies and flirting with Cat. Boogie Links is a pop locker who does some crazy contortionist moves that are sure to send chills up your spine and make you wince. Nigel said he knows Boogie Links has great rhythm and musicality, but can he dance? And can he dance with a partner? Lil C and Mary were entertained and want to see him in choreography, which is where Boogie is headed.

Jessica Jensen is a sweet 25 year old who has recently overcome a really rare form of cancer in the palm of her hand. She had five surgeries in six weeks, and during the last surgery the choice was "keep your hand and die, or lose your hand and live." She's very upbeat and so happy to be alive. During her contemporary routine, Jessica had a great performance quality and ability to connect. It will be interesting to see if she can pull off partner work and genres such as Bollywood with only one hand, but she didn't seem to be hindered during her solo. When she spoke with the judges, Jessica mentioned that she was back in the studio two weeks after losing her hand. Nigel said she did a great job positioning her arm in ways that seemed really well thought out. Lil C told Jessica, "You represent passion, strength, and acceptance...I couldn't ask for anything more for a dancer." The judges sent Jessica to choreography, and Jessica said she's done partner work post amputation.

Jonathan Bryant admitted that he has a big personality. He promised us a "dope solo." His solo seemed like a cross between contemporary and hip hop. Lil C told Jonathan, "You have a lot of emotion, but you need to learn to control it." Mary noticed his talent and energy, but thought that Jonathan wasn't funneling it in the right way. Nigel commented on his cocky smile, and Jonathan broke down because he did not intend to be rude. Jonathan is going home.

Jonathan's dismissal segued into clips of several other dancers that left Atlanta defeated.

Thomas Hamilton opened up to the cameras and said that he was a crack baby and was put in special education classes. Luckily, Thomas was adopted by his aunt, who he now calls "Mom," because his birth mother was a drug addict. Thomas said that he just needs a radio and he can dance, which has been his way to escape and express himself during his tough life. His goal is to get out of his hometown because it's not safe. Thomas took the stage and danced with a lot of emotion. Nigel read in Thomas's paperwork that he hated contemporary dancing until he took a dance class with Mia Michaels, which inspired him to pursue contemporary dance. Nigel said that Thomas has to be careful with "praise dancing," but saw enough from him to know he's good. Mary called him talented and gifted. Lil C said that Mia can have that effect on people. The judges wanted to see what else Thomas has in him, so they sent him to choreography.

After learning choreography with Anya and Pasha, Boogie Links didn't pull off a strong enough performance, so he's going home. He said his "salsa was more like guacamole." Jessica was another dancer who was not strong enough during the choreography round. She reflected on this experience as being a very cool one. Thomas' dancing had moments where he had it together and moments where he didn't, but it was enough to send him to Vegas along with seven other dancers.

You only have to wait one day for the next episode of auditions! So You Think You Can Dance heads to New Orleans for the first time. Who did you like? Did anyone stand out as Top 20 material? Sound off in the community.

Episode 5 - 09/30/09

For the first time ever, SYTYCD has hit up New Orleans, Louisiana. Since Nigel was in England obtaining an honorary doctorate, Adam Shankman and Lil C joined Mary in the Big Easy.

Day one in N.O. started out with Shelby "Skip" Skipper who showcased a style of dance we haven't seen on the show - New Orleans Bounce. His best friend, Donald "Big Choo" Norris, is the founder of this style. Cat paired up with Skip to learn a few moves, and she picked it up rather quickly! Skip performed his energetic bounce and used the whole stage. Mary has never seen the New Orleans Bounce until now, but she loved his energy and leg strength. Lil C gave Skip's moves the "buck" stamp of approval. Skip said he is glad to help bring this style into awareness. The judges stated that he's "not going to choreography," because he is going straight to Vegas.

Jonathan Litzler had an amazing audition and punctuated his contemporary routine with strong tumbling passes. Adam exclaimed, "That was one of the best auditions I've ever seen!" Lil C thought Jonathan had it all going on. Mary was on board with the other judges, so Jonathan is going straight to Vegas after being called a "Gem-a-roo."

We then got a quick look at three talented dancers. Alison Nance danced a contemporary number that had the judges calling her a "firecracker." Calvin Turner Jr. performed a contemporary routine with much floor work. Lil C thought his dancing was "beautiful." Edward Spots performed a routine with many strong turns and ridiculously high leaps. Adam called him an "extraordinary dancer" and appreciated that he danced with pure joy. All three powerhouses are headed to Las Vegas.

Eric "D.J. EZ" Le Blanc is a hip hop dancer who drinks 6 energy drinks a day! His hip hop routine had all 3 judges cracking up. The judges appreciated him coming out today, and Mary and Lil C sent him to choreography.

After a montage of good dancers, we met Justin Kenney. On his way to a hip hop show with some dancer friends, their car tire popped and they got into a wreck. Despite receiving some trauma to the head, Justin was dancing 3 weeks later. His style of dance is a hybrid of hip hop and break dancing, and because of his injury he still can't do as much head work. Justin said he's just happy to be dancing and happy to be alive. Justin showed amazing strength in his routine. He seemed just as comfortable on his hands as he was on feet. Mary thought he was strong and terrific, and Lil C and Adam were impressed too. Justin was sent to choreography.

Nineteen dancers worked with Season 3's Anya and Pasha in choreography. The judges told Eric that his effort was amazing, but he's not good enough to stick around. The judges told Justin that they're making a "huge gamble" on him because they're sending him to Vegas.

At the end of day one, 12 dancers made it through to Vegas from New Orleans.

On day two in New Orleans, record high temperatures moved the dancers and a jazz band into the coolness of the theater.

The day began with ballroom dancer Kimalee Piedad. She performs in the theater arts division of ballroom dance, which she compared to ice dancing because of its tough lifts and partnering work. Kimalee and her partner took the stage to perform a romantic audition piece, and they showed amazing strength by holding the poses. Mary thought it was fabulous, from her leg lines to her arms, and said that Kimalee's passion was evident. Lil C appreciated the interesting lifts, and Adam thought the dance was stunning. The judges wanted to know more about who Kimalee is as a dancer. She said she has trained in ballet and has done a little bit of everything. Although Adam suggested choreography for Kimalee, Mary and Lil C sent her straight to Vegas.

Micah Mixon grew up poor and subsisted off mayo sandwiches. He also went through a rebellious phase. Dancing was the only good thing he had in his life and it gave him a spiritual awakening that allowed him to turn his life around. The popper took the stage and was entertaining and quite good. He hasn't had any formal training, but Mary thought he had a good repertoire. Adam said, "We've seen it all before, but you made it seem fresh." Lil C gave Micah some good advice about not being ashamed of his struggles, and with that Micah was sent to choreography.

Lloyd Ballard, Tierney St. John, and Casey Chrisosto were a trio of bad dancers that made the judges wish that Nigel was present to speak his mind. The sub-par dancers also inspired Mary to create her list of SYTYCD rules.

Here are Mary's rules, as demonstrated by Adam Shankman:
1. hat down over eyes
2. reaching out to nowhere
3. rubbing your body
4. men's booty shaking

Jakob Karr took the stage and his strength, power, and finesse amazed the judges. Mary said, "that was really fantastic, oh my god!" Adam thought Jakob "freakin' rocked out there," and said his strength, elevation, and everything else was amazing. Lil C loved the way Jakob stretched the music out. It was unanimous - Jacob is Vegas bound.

After seeing lots of disappointed folks leaving auditions, we meet Diana Drexler. This 29 year old was encouraged to attend auditions despite having an ill grandfather at home. Unfortunately, he passed away while Diana was at auditions. Her song choice and her tragedy worked together to turn her dance into a story. Mary said that Diana's dancing seemed effortless, but Diana said it involved a good deal of effort and she feels like an old lady. Adam said she was very strong and her grandfather would be proud. Diana's dad told her, "He left just in time to get a front row seat." Be honest, who shed a tear after hearing that? Diana was sent to choreography.

At the end of day two, Anya and Pasha taught ballroom choreography to the remaining dancers. Micah is not going to Vegas, but the judges would like him to stick with dance and they believe he can go far. Diana is going to Vegas, along with 17 others from day two.

Tune in Tuesday as So You Think You Can Dance wraps up hometown auditions in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Episode 6 - 10/06/09

Salt Lake City, Utah was the last stop of the audition tour, and drew in the biggest crowd of hopefuls yet. Joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy at the judges' table was Mia Michaels.

First up was Bryan Boyer, a b-boy who specializes in power moves and stunts that look painful. Cat wore his helmet as Bryan spun on his head directly on the concrete. When Bryan took the stage for his audition, he kicked it off with some high-flying flips. Nigel thought this was one of the best hip hop routines they've seen this season. Mary liked Bryan's personality, and Mia summed up his performance in one word - "awesome." The three judges ask Bryan to stick around for choreography.

Tristy Mirci has had some unfortunate luck - she's been in 25 car accidents in just 3 years. None were her fault; she was always the passenger. Hoping to break her streak of bad luck, Tristy danced for the judges. Unfortunately, she was not good enough for a professional competition like SYTYCD, so she's going home...by foot.

Hayley Cloud experienced a dance related injury which gave her a herniated disk in her back. The doctors believed she would have permanent nerve damage, but she has recovered. Hayley danced and tumbled on the stage with such strength, you would never guess she experienced such a major injury. Mary called Hayley "strong, powerful, uninhibited." Mia read in her notes that Hayley said she could do a handstand for 5-8 minutes, and she challenged Hayley to hold one for the remainder of her critique session. When Hayley landed back on her feet she said, "I can't live without dance. It's my life." The judges agreed and Hayley is going to Vegas.

Megan Kinney was back for Season 6 auditions. She auditioned for Season 5 and made it to Vegas. Megan's sister is Caitlin Kinney, who made the Top 12 on Season 5 and is currently touring around the country with the Season 5 finalists. For the second season in a row, Megan received a ticket to Vegas.

Genise Ruidiaz is a very flexible dancer. She amazed the judges with her bends and is on her way to Las Vegas.

Nigel was in heaven in Salt Lake City, as was made evident by a montage of Nigel blushing as he watched beautiful ladies who could dance. But then there was Ariana Rowley, a local burlesque dancer.  For her audition, Ariana danced suggestively with a chair. After her performance, the camera panned to a silent audience. Mia was speechless too. Mary asked Ariana about her training, while Mia mustered up the words "weak and trashy." Nigel was entertained, and he and Mia sent Ariana to choreography, where she'll have to work with a partner instead of a chair.

Iveta Lukosiute is a ballroom dancer from Lithuania who came to America for opportunities. The radiant Iveta performed a ballroom routine with her partner that blew the judges away. Nigel called her vivacious and said she danced brilliantly. "I haven't enjoyed a couple who dance this much since Anya and Pasha," Nigel stated. The performance made Mary cry because she was so moved by the exquisite ballroom dancing she had just witnessed. Mia called Iveta "magical," and Mary wiped her tears and said, "She has hot tamale written all over her." It was no surprise after those rave reviews that Iveta was going to Vegas.

At the end of day one, Season 3 alums Anya and Pasha taught choreography to the dancers who were asked to stick around. Bryan Boyer couldn't keep up with the steps, so he quit 15 minutes into the session, calling it "too tough." Ariana performed for the judges, but she was not good enough to receive a plane ticket. When the day was done, 13 other dancers made it through to Vegas.

On the very last day of hometown auditions, we see Pascal Nayigiziki. The way he dances is by listening to music, and allowing the song to dictate his performance. An energetic Pascal took the stage. You can't deny his passion, but his performance just seemed to be a series of frantic movements, which Mary enjoyed imitating. The judges wanted to know what kind of dance that was. Pascal threw out hip hop and swagger as options, but Nigel said "No, it is Pascal style." The judges were entertained, but it's not good enough for SYTYCD.

After a montage of powerful couples with good chemistry, we met Ashleigh and Ryan Di Lello, a married couple from Orem, Utah. They used to be ballroom dance competitors, but now they're partners. Ashleigh said, "We don't have to fake the chemistry." After their audition together, Mary thought Ryan was a very strong dancer, but thought that Ashleigh's expression while dancing was a little fake. Nigel thought Ashleigh was "over-egging" it, but he said the dancing from this couple was terrific. The judges decided to send both Di Lellos to choreography.

Leigh Asay and Josh Murillo have only been practicing together for 2.5 weeks. Leigh auditioned for the show before, and she was hesitant to audition again after going through the heartbreak of not making the Top 20. The duo performed a strong routine and showed a lot of personality. However, during their audition, Leigh lost her entire big toenail and it began to bleed all over the stage. Leigh was so pumped after her performance that she humorously shooed the medics away so she could get straight to the critiques. Nigel said that she "nailed it." Mia said that if she can tolerate this pain, there's no stopping her. Nigel was impressed with the fact that they're a new couple and performed so well together. The judges decided to send Josh to choreography, but first he carried Leigh to get a ticket to Vegas from the judges. On her way out of the auditorium, Leigh yelled, "I'm going to Vegas and the emergency room!"

In the last session of Season 6 auditions choreography with Anya and Pasha, dancers attempted to master their moves. Josh will not be going to Vegas with Leigh, but Ryan and Ashleigh get to pack their bags for Nevada. In addition to the Di Lellos, 19 other dancers from day two in Salt Lake are going to Vegas.

Starting tomorrow, So You Think You Can Dance will air the Vegas semi-finals, where over 150 dancers make up the "most talented group we've ever had," as stated by Cat Deeley. Only 20 dancers will survive and come to Hollywood to perform live for your votes.

Can you believe Vegas week is here? Which dancers are you looking forward to seeing again?

Episode 7 - 10/07/09

After traveling to six cities to find America's Favorite Dancer, 152 of the best dancers in America were at the So You Think You Can Dance semi-finals in Las Vegas. Host Cat Deeley and 152 dancers welcomed the judges: Tyce Diorio, Mia Michaels, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe.

Vegas auditions began with solos as a way to compare each dancer with one another. First up was Nathan Trasoras. This basketball shorts-wearing dancer wowed the judges when he auditioned for Season 5, but he was only 17 years old at the time. Since you must be 18 to be on the show, the judges decided to give Nathan a ticket to Season 6 auditions in Las Vegas because he turned 18 in between seasons. Although the judges aren't giving feedback after each solo, they looked pleased with Nathan's performance.

Ellenore Scott performed a quirky routine with lots of personality. She received a standing ovation from the crowd and judges.

Following Ellenore was a half hour of amazing solos. Out of the first 10 dancers, two dancers, Paige and Chase, were sent home but the others were through, including Ellenore, Nathan, b-boy Justin Kenney, Iveta Lukosiute, and four more dancers.

Next we saw a montage of more incredible dancers who entertained the judges. Shelby "Skip" Skipper had the judges bouncing in their seats as they watched him perform the New Orleans Bounce. Skip and the other contestants shown sailed on through to the next round of choreography. Allison Becker, the hearing impaired dancer who auditioned in Arizona, and Thomas Hamilton, the young man looking for a way out of his tough Georgia hometown, were the next dancers to perform solos. Thomas climbed the scaffolding on the stage and Nigel had to ask him to get down. After watching them dance, the judges decided to send Allison and Thomas home.

At the end of day one, same sex ballroom dance champions Willem de Vries and Jacob Jason performed together. The judges were more impressed with Willem than Jacob, so they sent Jacob home. Jacob never said goodbye to Willem, but Willem said he will be sure to fight extra hard to stick around and represent same sex ballroom dancers.

In total, 41 dancers were sent home based on their initial solos in Vegas, which meant that 111 dancers were still left in the competition.

The first genre the contestants would have to master was hip hop. All of the dancers squished together on the stage to learn a hip hop routine from Tabitha and Napoleon D'umo. After an hour of rehearsing, the dancers performed for the judges. Nigel stopped the music abruptly during the first group to let them know they need to scurry off the stage because they're all through. The next group of dancers included Jean Lloret, the b-boy who was sent straight to Vegas without any criticism after his audition in Boston. Unfortunately, Jean wasn't able to master the choreography and was sent packing.

Next up was Ryan Kasprzak, who was the last man to be cut before Season 5's Top 20. His brother Evan made it to the Season 5 finale. Would Ryan be following in his little brother's footsteps? After Ryan danced hip hop the judges were split down the middle, so he is sticking around, but he is hanging by a thread.

At the end of day one, hip hop choreography sent 21 dancers home.

Day two in Vegas started with Cha Cha choreography led by Louis van Amstel with help from Season 3's Anya Garnis. Louis promised the dancers that this would be a very quick routine, and his performance of the Cha Cha with Anya proved just that. Just 15 minutes into rehearsal, Billy Bell was smacked in the face by his partner and his nose began to bleed. Billy was forced to sit down until the bleeding stopped.

The first group performed and all of the dancers were sent through to the next round including Iveta Lukosiute and Russell Ferguson, who got a standing ovation from Adam Shankman. Adam was particularly blown away by Russell, and Nigel said, "Whatever she did, she should do to a lot more people here."

After lunch, we saw the judges praise many dancers' Cha Cha moves, and they were all sent through to the next round of auditions.

It wasn't long before Billy's nose healed, but he missed most of the rehearsal and never got to practice to the music. His partner, Salsa dancer Christina, helped him through the moves in the back of the theater. B-boy Jonathan "Legacy" Perez and contemporary dancer Paula Van Oppen were in the audition same group as Billy. Legacy is not used to working with a partner, so he was nervous. After their group performed, Mary said that Legacy didn't show enough personality, but the judges still love Legacy's b-boy solo. They asked him to fight for his life in the competition by performing a solo at the end of the Cha Cha round. Everybody else in his group, including Billy, went through to the next round.

John Litzler, the contemporary dancer/tumbler who impressed the judges during hometown auditions, didn't perform a strong enough Cha Cha so he was also asked to dance for his life.

Ryan Kasprzak was in the final group of Cha Cha performers and needed to impress the judges in order to stick around after yesterday's warning. After Ryan's audition, Nigel said people will always be talking about his amazing solo as long as SYTYCD is around, but Ryan didn't have the feeling or style that's needed to execute a successful Cha Cha. Despite the judges' love for Ryan, he's going home. On his way out the door, Ryan called Evan to share the news. "It has been amazing. I wouldn't trade it for the world," Ryan said to Evan.

John was the first dancer to perform for his life in the competition. Nigel said his face revealed that "the lights were on but nobody's home." Five judges placed their votes and it was up to Tyce to determine John's fate. "If this is dancing for your life it needs to look like the last time you're going to dance ever," Tyce said before telling John it's a no. Although John is headed home, the judges encouraged him to come back next year. Since he's only 18 years old, he has time to work on his facial expressions and performance to make it on the show in the future.

Before performing his solo, Legacy broke down on the stairs due to the stress of having to "dance for his life." After performing his b-boy moves, Nigel told Legacy, "You need to come up to the standard in other dance forms. What you do is fabulous." The rest of the judges mentioned that Legacy needs to work on his transitions between stunts and not waste so much time. Luckily for Legacy, he received 6 yeses and he's moving on to the next round.

At the end of the ballroom portion of auditions, early favorties Teddy Tedholm and Skip Skipper were going home.

Next week is more footage from "the best Vegas week ever" as 77 dancers fight for 20 spots on So You Think You Can Dance's sixth season.

Were you shocked by Ryan's early ouster? What other eliminations surprised you? Which dancers impressed you?

Episode 8 - 10/14/09

It was day two of the Las Vegas round of auditions. Less than half of the semi-finalists remained in the competition. The day started off with pop jazz choreography led by Laurieann Gibson. She's a tough choreographer, and she wasn't afraid to speak her mind to the dancers on stage.

Karen and Matthew Hauer are the married ballroom dancers that we first saw at Boston auditions. They nervously took in Laurieann's choreography, and Karen was getting really stressed out. When it was time to perform for the six judges (Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Adam Shankman, Debbie Allen, Mia Michaels, and Tyce Diorio), Karen barely scraped through to the next round. Unfortunately, Matthew didn't make it out of pop jazz choreography, and Karen was really upset when she had to say goodbye to her husband.

Nigel had to stop the following group mid-dance because no one was emoting or dancing powerfully. Contemporary dancers Mollee Gray and Billy Bell were in the next group to take the stage. Nigel said, "Mollee, you're dancing like a little girl." He said there's a reason why you have to be 18 to be on this show, and he wants her to start dancing like a woman. Dancing in the same group as Mollee and Billy was Russell Ferguson. He's the first krumper to make it this far in the competition. After watching him dance, Nigel asked Russell if he's ever had any formal training, and Russell said he hasn't. Nigel told Russell, "You're doing so well. Keep up the good work." Mollee, Billy, and Russell made it to the next round of auditions; however, Mollee limped off the stage. She didn't want anyone to know that she injured her ankle during contemporary choreography, but the pain became unbearable and she had to see the medic and go to the hospital.

At the end of pop jazz choreography, six dancers were cut including ballroom dancer Iveta Lukosiute and same-sex ballroom dancer Willem de Vries.

It was 9pm on day two, and the remaining 69 dancers were called to the stage. Cat mentioned that the grueling day was not over. The dancers were broken up into groups and each group was given a CD with one song on it. The groups had to choreograph a routine to the music and perform it for the judges the next morning. Many of the groups found the experience to be tense, but one group found it to be easy and enjoyable. Russell Ferguson, Paula van Oppen, Pauline Mata, Jakob Karr, and Jacki Ford listened to their Broadway music and began choreographing. They felt confident after just one hour of working together and were finished by 11pm.

Russell's group was the first to go to bed and the first to perform the next morning. Their routine was a really fun one with a lot of personality. Nigel called the dance "inventive" and "creative." The judges had nothing negative to say, and they only had love for this group of five talented dancers who moved on to the next round.

After a montage of group dances, Tyce said, "Be amazing every time, and if you're not, you've got to go." The last group of the morning had a tough night. Their fifth member, Mollee, injured her ankle and went to the hospital so her group had to start choreographing without her. Mollee arrived 2 hours into rehearsals at midnight and revealed that her ankle is very badly sprained. Luckily, Mollee's group brought her up to speed and they rehearsed all throughout night. When they took the stage for the judges they performed their emergency ward themed group routine, where Mollee got to play a character with an ankle injury. Mia said, "As a whole package, I thought it was stupid." Nigel thought the dancers hid behind the characters instead of dancing. However, he liked that they improvised with the problem of Mollee's ankle. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the entire group advanced in the competition.

It was the middle of day three in Vegas and it was time for the round that makes everyone nervous - contemporary with Mia Michaels. After seeing a montage of Mia's scarier moments set to Halloween music, Mia calmly took the stage and led the dancers in yoga and a spiritual approach to entering the next session of dance. When Mia was done teaching, she was met with a line of hugs from the dancers.

One of the first contestants to dance was Kevin "K'Bez" Hunte, who made it until the very end of Vegas auditions during Season 3. He was back to prove himself this season and the judges went wild over Kevin's footwork and mastery of Mia's choreography. Mia said, "I cannot get over his technique." Tyce told Kevin, "You're amazing because you take the reigns and go." Tyce and Nigel called him brilliant, and Kevin was excited to show that hip hop dancers can master all genres of dance. Russell, Billy, and Mollee all performed well during the contemporary round of auditions too.

At 3pm, only one hip hop dancer was left - Legacy. He had to dance for his life after the previous day's Cha Cha routine, so he needed to nail this style of dance. The pressure overwhelmed Legacy and he was crying by time rehearsals were done. Legacy performed for the judges, and when he was called to the microphone to find out his fate, Mia asked Legacy how he was felling. He said that she changed something inside of him and he began to cry. "It's your energy. Just your movement means something and you just made me a better dancer," Legacy told Mia. Mia agreed and said, "We all think that you were a better dancer today and you exposed yourself in a beautiful way." Mia called him "perfectly imperfect." Legacy was so pleased that he was moving on in the competition and amazed that he came out of his shell to experience a whole new world of dance.

Contemporary choreography sent 11 dancers home. Overwhelmed by the grueling day of choreography, Russell took a break in the hallway to call his mom and admitted, teary-eyed, that he made it through.

Day 4 in Vegas began with over a hundred fewer dancers than the week started with. The next stop on the Season 6 journey was Broadway choreography with Tyce Diorio. Tyce said that the Broadway round requires stamina, energy, character, and strength - all qualities that might be hard to muster up after three days of nonstop dance. Tyce met with the girls first and put them into groups of three. Pauline Mata auditioned in Season 5 and made it all the way through the entire Vegas week but was cut at the very end. Mary said she was so close to making the Top 20 of Season 5. She's back again to try her luck in Vegas. During her final rehearsal of the Broadway choreography, she landed on her ankle and fell to the ground. Her ankle bone looked swollen. Pauline cried, but not because she was in physical pain; she was upset that she got injured so close to the end. She was sent to the hospital to find out what was wrong with her ankle.

A dancer named Noelle performed for the judges, and Nigel called her a "fabulous, terrific, little star," but her group member, Lexie, was sent home. Tap dancer Bianca mastered Broadway choreography and Nigel said, "Terrific. Go and sit down." Dina was the last dancer standing during Season 5 auditions. The final spot in the Top 10 girls went to Asuka over Dina, and Dina came back this year, but was cut after performing Tyce's choreography.

Ashleigh Di Lello is in final group. She is the ballroom dancer who auditioned with her husband, Ryan, in Salt Lake City. The judges were into Ryan more than they were into Ashleigh, and the trend was continuing throughout Vegas auditions, but they both made it to Broadway round. After Ashleigh danced the Broadway routine the judges said, "We put you through this week...hoping that you'd come through for us. We believe you've grown one of the most out of everybody." She got all six judges' votes to continue on. Ryan greeted her off stage with a big hug.

Seventeen girls made it through the final round of choreography and headed to the pool to celebrate. Pauline returned from the hospital on crutches and was told to stay off her sprained ankle for two days.

The guys met with Tyce to learn their Broadway choreography. Ryan Di Lello had extra motivation to make it through this round since his wife just advanced to the final round of Vegas week. At the end of Ryan's performance he ripped off his shirt. Adam said, "I need to go to the gym right now." Ashleigh yelled to her husband, "You are such a ham!" As the judges fanned themselves off, Nigel said, "I just want you to remember you're a married man...if you wouldn't mind buttoning just one of those buttons up..." and Ryan listened, and chose to fasten the button at the very bottom of the shirt. Ryan got to join his wife, because he received all 6 votes from the judges. Several other guys stood out during Broadway choreography including Nathan, Tyrone, Jakob, Phillip, and K'Bez. A dancer named Dominic made it to the very end of Season 4 and got taken off in an ambulance with an injury. Now he's back and wants redemption. During his performance for the judges, Dominic hammed it up and jumped off stage. He felt confident with his performance; however he only received 2 votes from the judges. Dominic broke down and fell to the floor. Adam thought he cared too much about the results and wasn't performing in the moment. Nigel told Dominic he needs to toughen up in order to survive in the dance world.

Broadway choreography sent 5 more guys home. After the last round of choreography, only 38 dancers remained. Pauline sat with her leg propped up, wondering what her fate would be, as the other 37 dancers performed solos for the judges. The dancers were not critiqued on their solos, but it was their last chance to make an impression on the judges.

Billy Bell was up first, and his powerful dancing made Adam very emotional. All of the judges were blown away by Billy and couldn't believe what they witnessed. It would be tough for the next 36 dancers to follow that! We saw a quick montage of the final solos, and Mia was so moved by one girl's solo that she cried and threw her pen at her. At this point, everyone was amazing, so the judges had some tough decisions to make.

Who made the Top 20? Tune in next Wednesday to find out. Which 20 dancers would you like to see perform for America's vote? Discuss it now in the Community Forums.

Episode 9 - 10/21/09

It's the moment we've all been waiting for - after several weeks of auditions, who would make Season 6's Top 20?

Las Vegas auditions started with 152 dancers, and by the end of the week only 38 dancers remained. All 38 traveled to Hollywood to find out their fate.

Did you notice the new opening to the show? What do you think?

There are 38 nervous dancers, and host Cat Deeley told Nathan Trasoras that he'd be first to find out his fate. Nathan auditioned for Season 5, but was deemed ineligible since he was only 17 years old. Now eligible, Nathan returned this year and continued to wow the judges during Vegas auditions. He walked to the stage and stood before the six judges from Vegas week - Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Adam Shankman, Debbie Allen, Mia Michaels, and Tyce Diorio. Mia gave good news to Nathan: "We feel that we'd like to be a part of your growth. You are part of the top 20." The youngest contestant is the first member of the Top 20.

The next 30 minutes brought bad news for three dancers. Next up was ballet dancer David Hovhannisyan. He learned a lot in Vegas - including hip hop. David is not a member of the Top 20, and the dancers were shocked that David was let go.

Kathryn McCormick just moved to Los Angeles from Georgia. Being away from her family is making her homesick. She was very emotional and warned America that she might start crying and her voice might get high. Kathryn was right! As she got increasingly emotional, her voice became very high pitched. Nigel encouraged Kathryn to breathe. When Kathryn found out she made the Top 20, she cried some more.

Channing Cooke, the ice cream scooper and tomboy from Massachusetts, was the next dancer to meet with the judges. Nigel told Channing that she's exceptionally strong but that she needs to work on relying on a partner, because the judges unanimously voted her into the Top 20. Nigel said he can't wait to play soccer with her.

Contemporary dancer Ariana DeBose sprinted out from behind the curtain to share good news with her fellow dancers - she's in! Following Ariana was another contemporary dancer, Ellenore Scott, who knocked her knees together in excitement after she found out she's through to the Top 20.

Noelle Marsh and Mollee Gray were crying after seeing 2 contemporary girls make it through. They met at Vegas week and became roommates and best friends right away. Because she's seen every season of SYTYCD, Mollee stated that they always send one best friend through and not the other, so she believes that will be the case for her and Noelle. The two girls would have to wait a while longer, because it was Billy Bell's turn.

Billy said he had fun in Vegas (I guess he didn't let his bloody nose bring him down!) and said that his second solo was the best time he ever had dancing. He enjoyed moving the judges to tears. This 19 year old is currently a sophomore at The Juilliard School. He mentioned that the school said they would hold his scholarship and spot in the program in order to let him take a brief leave of absence for the show. Debbie Allen told Billy that he now has to ask the school to do just that, because he's made it to the Top 20. Billy does a little dance, and his dramatic entrance into the waiting room cracked Cat up.

Two dancers, Jake and Brandon, didn't make it through, but the judges appreciated their talent and asked them to try again next year.

Amber Jackson was up next. This powerhouse and amazing technical dancer didn't have the performance quality the judges were looking for during her hometown audition. In Vegas, she brought out her personality. As Amber approached the judges, Mary told her she is stunning and her technique is exquisite, but said that is not enough - the judges are looking for even more personality. Amber won't be in the Top 20 this season, but the judges believe in her. The dancers are so shocked to find out about Amber that they jump up out of their chair and some cry.

Krumper Russell Ferguson wants to be the first krumper ever to make the Top 20 on SYTYCD. Mia told Russell, "When I first saw you dance...I was blown away because it was so authentic...and then you kept proving yourself." During Vegas week, she announced that she'd like to see Russell in the Top 10. Russell is halfway there - he's in the Top 20. He cried tears of joy - krumpers have a soft side too!

Kevin K'bez Hunte amazed the judges with his own style, hip hop, and his ability to tackle all of the other genres. To share the good news with the dancers in the waiting room, K'bez put his hood over his face and then flashed two thumbs up at his pals. He and Russell seemed glad to embark on the SYTYCD journey together.

Three tap dancers made it to the Top 38 and were patiently and nervously awaiting their fate - Phillip Attmore, Bianca Revels, and Peter Sabasino. No tappers have ever made it to the Top 20. Bianca and Peter auditioned for the show before, but this is the first time tappers have never made it to this point in the competition. Bianca said she'd be happy as long as one of the tap dancers made it to the Top 20. Cat told Bianca that she's up first. It's her third season auditioning and she's so glad she came back for Season 6 auditions. After psyching Bianca out, Nigel admitted that she's in the Top 20. Bianca fell to the floor, cried, and asked Nigel why he duped her like that.

Tap dancer Phillip Attmore was next. He talked back to the judges after the group round of auditions in an attempt to stick up for his group. When Phillip greeted the judges, they openly discussed his defensive nature. But thanks to his smooth dancing and a killer solo, Phillip was sent through.

Peter Sabasino was not discouraged by the news that two tap dancers are now in the Top 20, saying that the only thing better than two in the top 20 is three. Despite having a few ups and downs during Vegas auditions, Peter gets to join the other two tappers in the Top 20. Phillip and Bianca looked crushed and nervous as they waited for Peter to emerge from behind the curtain. After Peter announced the good news, his fellow tappers rushed him and celebrated.

Although the tap dancers were successful, five other dancers met with the judges and were sent home.

Next up was contemporary dancer Victor Smalley. The judges talked about him often during the course of Vegas week - first because they didn't like his distracting hair. He shaved his head after the judges confronted him about his hair style, which caused the judges to focus less on his hair and more on his strength. Nigel said that this season saw some of the strongest contemporary guys across all six seasons of the show. Adam told Victor he's in the Top 20, and Victor was so excited.

Another contemporary dancer, Jakob Karr, also made the Top 20, and he kicked up his legs in celebration.

Noelle and Mollee were still nervous. There were only 5 spots left, and it was Mollee's turn to find out her future. Mollee has gone through the motions today, and now she's just ready to find out what the verdict is. The judges want her to dance like a 20 year old instead of a 14-15 year old. Nigel fooled her and then revealed to her that she's in the Top 20, but she has to grow and mature. She skipped down the hall and followed Nigel's suit by tricking the waiting dancers. When Mollee revealed the truth, Noelle was thrilled for her new BFF.

Pauline Mata was up next. She didn't get to perform her Broadway number or her final solo for the judges because she sprained her ankle and was carted off to the hospital. Adam told Pauline, "not getting to perform your final solo was a disadvantage, but only for the TV audience," because the judges think she's fabulous and she's a part of the Season 6 Top 20.

Then it was Noelle's turn to meet with the judges. She tried out last season but was cut during Broadway choreography. The judges thought she improved since last season. Noelle emerged from the hallway and announced that she made it. She and Mollee embraced each other and jumped and screamed. "I've never been so excited," Noelle said.

After four more dancers were cut, it was b-boy Legacy Perez's turn to meet with the judges. He was unsure of his fate since a hip hop dancer and a krumper were just put into the Top 20. After a fake-out from Mary Murphy, Legacy learned that he made the Top 20. Mary reminded him that he needs to "bring it" in all of the other dance styles. Legacy was in shock until all six judges announced simultaneously, "You're in the Top 20!"

Paula van Oppen made it this far last season, but she did not make the Season 5 Top 20. The judges love her and invited her into the Season 6 Top 20. Paula said that means the world to her.

A total of 18 dancers were through - 9 guys and 9 girls. Four dancers remained in the waiting room, and all four were ballroom dancers. Husband and wife Ryan and Ashleigh Di Lello were two of the hopefuls. Ryan and Gene went in first. Ashleigh said she was going to cry, so Ryan ran back to give her a hug. Ballroom expert Mary told the men, "Ryan, those guns are going to be moving into the next round." Ryan and Gene embraced. The last spot was for Karen Hauer or Ashleigh. Karen auditioned with her husband, but he was cut during Vegas week. Nigel told Ashleigh that Ryan got through, and she began to cry. Nigel said that through out the auditions process, Karen didn't do anything wrong and Ashleigh grew. Ultimately, Karen made the Top 20. As Ryan waited anxiously with Cat he said, "If Ashleigh doesn't make it, she can have my spot." Karen shared her good news and Ryan was shocked but cordial. He attempted to fight back tears. There was a long wait before Ashleigh came out. Ashleigh said, "I made it too!" All 20 dancers began to cry. Here's what happened - Paula politely turned the judges' down because she was offered a contract for a movie. She wished she could be part of the show, but she is unable to do both. As Ashleigh and Ryan kissed, Bianca said, "Now you have 18 kids!"

America, your Top 20 is:

Channing (contemporary), Nathan (contemporary), Russell (krump), Kathryn (contemporary), Billy (contemporary), Ariana (contemporary), Ellenore (jazz), Jakob (contemporary), Bianca (tap), Kevin (hip hop), Mollee (jazz), Phillip (tap), Noelle (contemporary), Victor (contemporary), Pauline (jazz), Peter (tap), Karen (ballroom), Legacy (b-boy), Ashley (ballroom), and Ryan (ballroom).

What are your thoughts on the Top 20? Any surprise eliminations? Do you have any early favorites? Throughout Vegas week we saw a clip of Mia saying "Season 6 will blow Season 5 out of the water." Do you agree?

Tune in Monday at 8/7c as the Top 20 take the stage for the very first time!

Meet the Top 20

Last Wednesday the Top 20 dancers were revealed. Tonight we got to see them in action in their own styles.

Cat Deeley stepped out on the new Hollywood set. The balconies are gone and the set resembles the one used in the Season 5 finale at Kodak Theatre. Cat introduced the judges: new permanent judge Adam Shankman, Ballroom Expert Mary Murphy, and Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe. There was a mysterious fourth chair that Cat inquired about. Nigel spun the chair around and it literally had Paula Abdul's name on it. He explained that whenever Paula wants to appear as a judge on SYTYCD, there will be a chair for her.

This show was about showcasing the Top 20; they will be performing in their own style. Nobody will be going home at the end of the night.

Wade and Amanda Robson met with the Top 20 dancers to teach them choreography for a group performance that would start the show. The Robsons explained that the dance is about 20 people who meet up in a bar/restaurant and try and outdo each other. Dancing to "Comanche" by The Revels, contemporary dancers Noelle, Ariana, Nathan, Channing, and Victor kicked-off the group number and were dressed in white. Then tappers Bianca, Phillip, and Peter and ballroom dancers Karen, Ryan, and Ashleigh rose from the table in their red attire and danced together. Next, hip hop dancers Kevin, Russell, and Legacy were joined by contemporary dancers Billy and Jakob and they danced in their sharp gray suits. Lastly, the jazz/contemporary dancers, Kathryn, Pauline, Ellenore, and Mollee, showed off their long lines in emerald green dresses. The judges and the audience jumped to their feet and applauded their new Top 20.

Tabitha and Napoleon met with the three hip hop dancers: Krumper Russell, B-boy Legacy, and Hip Hop dancer Kevin. The choreographers were so excited to teach these guys, and they said it was the most talent they've ever had in the room at once. It wasn't all a breeze, though. The three dancers had to learn choreography and adjust to each others' styles. Performing a stunt-filled routine to "Beggin' (District 78 Remix)" by Madcon, the number started off with breaking and locking, then synchronized choreography, and then the stunts poured out, which included partner work, jumping off the stage, and human limbo. At the end of the routine, these street dancers were "beggin'" for money. Nigel said, "If that's an example of how exciting this season is gonna be, bring it on." He continued, "I don't care. I'll lose the hearing out of my left ear." Nigel called Russell "fabulous," he talked about Legacy's growth, and said he knows that Kevin will "bring it" every week.

Next was a contemporary routine choreographed by Emmy-winning choreographer Tyce Diorio. He met with four of the Season 6 contemporary dancers: Channing, Jakob, Ariana, and Nathan. Tyce explained that the routine consisted of four personalized stories and how these characters personalize such sadness. The dancers interviewed that they were nervous about being emotionally vulnerable - and so early in the season! Dancing to "Crying" by K.D. Lang, the four dancers emoted from head to toe, yet they were able to show sadness while still dancing with overwhelming strength and clean lines. After the performance, Cat and Mary said they don't know how the judges will be able to send anyone home this season. Mary thought the contemporary routine she just witnessed was "Unbelievable! So beautiful." She couldn't even find weaknesses in any of the four dancers. Mary said that Channing, who was afraid of dancing with her heart on her sleeve, already knocked it out of the ballpark in the very first episode. "Ariana - you have blown me away. So dynamic. Your body lines are just insane," Mary mentioned. She was also amazed by Nathan and his pirouettes. "Jakob - all your leaps, your lines, your timing - you just fly through the air. You're the new dance superman out there!" Mary exclaimed. Eight dancers down and they all seemed to be flawless!

Next we were treated to the first ever tap routine on SYTYCD. There are three tap dancers this season and they are the first tap dancers to ever be on the show. Peter Sabasino, Bianca Revels, and Phillip Attmore met with tap choreographer Derick K. Grant. Derick said that a good tap routine is "like a good kung fu movie - it's action-packed." At the same time, the dance "needs to look like we're floating across the stage," Peter explained. Derick, who is new to the show, said "I couldn't ask for a better group of dancers." Dancing to "Take The ‘A' Train" by Ella Fitzgerald, the three tappers performed together and they each had a solo to showcase their fancy footwork. Nigel said he's so pleased to bring tap to the show and introduce a new choreographer. He then explained that these three dancers will be doing everybody else's style, but nobody will be doing their's because it is too difficult to teach tap.

The three jazz dancers, Mollee Gray, Pauline Mata, and Ellenore Scott, met with Sonya Tayeh. Sonya said that she choreographed a flirtatious routine and then joked that it's hard for her to teach them to be sexy because she admits that she's not. However, she thinks that confidence is sexy, and even though this dance is sexy, it doesn't mean it's slow. In fact, it's a fast-paced jazz routine. Dancing to "On a Cloud" by PPP, the three girls leaped and twirled across the stage in their corsets and tutus. Adam told Mollee, "You just graduated from High School Musical!" He called Pauline "gorgeous" and told Ellenore it was great to see her dancing like that.

The second set of contemporary dancers - Victor, Noelle, Billy, and Kathryn - met with Mandy Moore. While rehearsing, Noelle hurt her toenail and it started bleeding. Taking the stage to Coldplay's "Viva La Vida," the four dancers performed very powerfully and showed off their long lines and strength. Adam said, "Mandy Moore, that was one of the most beautiful, relentless, and intense [dances]." The judges couldn't believe that Mandy used such a strong routine on a non-competition episode. Adam, Nigel, and Mary were pleased with Victor, Noelle, Billy, and Kathryn and had absolutely no complaints!

The night ended with the three Latin ballroom dancers - Karen Hauer, Ashleigh Di Lello, and Ryan Di Lello. Choreographer Jason Gilkison met with the trio and choreographed a piece where the two women would be fighting over the man. However, at the time that Jason choreographed this number, he didn't know he was working with a married couple. Ashleigh said that she hoped she would win since Ryan is her husband. Dancing a sexy routine to "Everything I Can't Have" by Robin Thicke, the three dancers showed off their fiery footwork and partnering skills. It looked like Ashleigh walked away with her man. Mary thought Karen, Ryan, and Ashleigh were all so hot and she loved watching them dance.

At the end of the night, all 20 dancers came out on stage. Tuesday night, the dancers will get into their new pairs and perform in their first SYTYCD competition show. At the end of the night, two dancers will be sent packing.

Wasn't that a fun episode?! Did you enjoy seeing the dancers in their element? Any early favorites? Discuss the show in our community.

Episode 11 - 10 / 27 / 2009

Top 20 Performances

It's here - after weeks of auditions, the Top 20 have been selected and performed in their first competition show. Due to the baseball play-offs, this episode was both a performance show and an elimination show.

The Top 20 were introduced one-by-one on the stage for the first time, and new semi-finalist Brandon Dumlao was introduced first. It was interesting to see a tapper do their solo in tap shoes because you could hear their feet over the Dance theme song.

Cat Deeley introduced the show and looked stunning as she channeled an old Hollywood glamour essence in her red Shanghai Tang dress, soft curls, and Miu Miu heels. Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe sat at the judges' table. The fourth chair was still present for Paula Abdul. In regards to Paula appearing on the show, Nigel said, "You can judge, you can dance, or you can choreograph." Nigel said last night's "Top 20 dancing in their own styles was the best dancing we've seen." He then announced that contestant Billy Bell fell really ill this week and took the doctor's advice to not return to the competition. In addition, Noelle Marsh hurt herself during rehearsals and is going for an MRI. She can't dance tonight and will wait and see what the doctor says. In this situation, choreographer Melanie Lapatin will stand in for her tonight. Noelle sat in the bleachers to cheer on her fellow dancers with a smile on her face.

The Top 20 were paired into 10 couples. At the end of the night, the judges would choose which four dancers were weakest and they'd perform solos before the judges cut one guy and one girl.

The first couple revealed was Channing Cooke with Phillip Attmore. In their interview we found out that Channing's a tomboy and not always elegant, and Phillip has been writing spoken word poetry for about 5 years and performs around the world with a non-profit group. The pair met with Jason Gilkison to learn Jive choreography. Jason admitted, "In this Jive, the footwork is ridiculous." Phillip felt confident since tap requires fast footwork. Channing and Phillip took the stage and jived to "Rockin' Robin" by The Jackson 5. This good looking couple pulled off the fast footwork. Adam called this pairing "very classy." He thought Phillip danced beautifully, and he was surprised by Channing's elegance. However, all three judges gave Phillip and Channing some advice on how they can refine their Jive.

Jakob Karr and Ashleigh Di Lello were the next couple revealed. Ashleigh is blessed to be able to dance after taking a six year break from dance due to a serious illness and a back injury. Jakob grew up in Windmere, a small town in Florida and said the best move he made was to move to New York for school. The duo met with Tyce Diorio to learn a "sultry" Broadway routine. At rehearsal, Jakob and Ashleigh were digging the choreography and didn't seem to have a problem finding a connection. Dancing to "Hit Me With A Hot Note (And Watch Me Bounce)" from the Sophisticated Ladies (original soundtrack) the two were definitely steaming up the dance floor, and Jakob didn't have any trouble partnering is long-legged lady. The judges went wild for this pair and their performance. They all agreed that Jakob is one of the most gifted dancers the show has seen, and he also brings personality to his dances. Nigel said if Ashleigh keeps dancing like she did in this Broadway number, she could end up in the finals with Jakob.

The third couple of the night was Ariana Debose and Peter Sabasino. Ariana is a country girl who rides a tractor. Peter is from Philadelphia and grew up in a close-knit Italian family. Ariana and Peter met with Tabitha and Napoleon to learn an android themed hip hop routine. During rehearsal, the dancers found that they had a natural chemistry. Dancing to "Black & Gold" by Sam Sparro, Ariana and Peter were a pair of androids with a connection. Nigel thought they were both out of their element, which is unusual for these two dancers. Adam and Mary also really liked these two dancers, but didn't think all of the necessary elements were there in terms of hip hop technique.

Noelle Marsh was paired with Russell Ferguson. Russell is a krumper who can get down and dirty, and Noelle is a southern belle - they're polar opposites. They met with Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin to tackle the Foxtrot. Neither dancer had a clue what the Foxtrot is, and Melanie joked that she never thought she'd teach a krumper the Foxtrot. Since that clips package was taped, Noelle badly injured her knee and was replaced by Melanie for tonight's show. Russell and Melanie took the stage together in what was Melanie's second time filling in on the show (she danced with Pasha on a Season 3 episode when his partner, Jessi, fell ill). Trotting to "Vagabond Shoes" by Vic Damone, Russell looked the part and made it easy to forget that he's a krumper. Adam Shankman said that Russell "had elegance and style and everything you don't see in krump." Mary was impressed that Russell had to adapt to dancing with two new partners this week, and he's a dancer who normally doesn't work with a partner. Nigel joked, "I can't imagine Fred Astaire getting on this stage and krumping," and then called Russell an inspiration.

Bianca Revels and Victor Smalley were the next couple of the night. Making sacrifices to pursue a career as a dancer, tapper Bianca moved across the country with just her dog. Contemporary dancer Victor is from Miami and likes to wear colorful clothes. They met with Season 2 runner-up Travis Wall, who was back on the show to follow up on his amazing piece that Jeanine Mason and Jason Glover danced last season.  The storyline for this contemporary dance is that Victor's character is arrogant and Bianca is invisible to him. Bianca and Victor have a lot of chemistry and a great friendship, which made it hard for her to be invisible to him. Dancing to "Wasted Time" by Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Victor and Bianca performed a slow and passionate piece with some moves that required a great deal of strength. They nailed the emotions too. The judges were impressed once again by Travis' choreography. They also believed that the charisma and chemistry this couple showed was the best of the night so far.

The next couple of the evening was ballroom dancer Karen Hauer and hip hop dancer Kevin Hunte. Karen is originally from Venezuela and loves Latin dancing and representing her heritage through dance. Kevin has been modeling for two years and knows how to work the camera with his eyes. The new couple met with Tony and Meredith to take on the Cha Cha. Karen is comfortable and experienced with this style of dance, but Kevin has no experience with it, so Karen had to help her partner out. Dancing to the Glee cast version of "Push It." They were sexy and pulled off some difficult looking stunts. Adam was so wrapped up in Karen's dancing that he couldn't contain his excitement over her. Mary was also impressed with Karen, and even made her the first Season 6 dancer on the Hot Tamale Train! She said Kevin did a great job and is waiting on the Hot Tamale Train platform with his bags packed.

Ellenore Scott and Ryan Di Lello were the next two dancers to take the stage. Ryan loves to work out, which is pretty obvious to tell by looking at him. Ellenore is 19 but says she's been dancing for 20 years since her parents met dancing and her mom even danced on stage with her dad when she was pregnant with Ellenore. The couple met with choreographer Sonya Tayeh to learn jazz choreography, which is Ellenore's style. The dance is about two creatures - Ryan, the dark overbearing creature, and Ellenore, the character who is submissive and pure. Ryan liked the idea of taking on a persona, and Ellenore was impressed with his natural instincts. "I haven't been this inspired here until today," Sonya said. Ellenore said this piece might be the best one she's ever performed and that SYTYCD has ever seen. Ellenore and Ryan entered the stage from the wing. This routine was smartly choreographed because Ellenore got to make use of her popping, and Ryan got to play up his strength. The judges were impressed with Sonya's choreography and were pleased to see great chemistry between the two dancers. Adam said they're two of the most exciting dancers, and Nigel said that Ryan took him by surprise.

Jazz dancer Pauline Mata enjoys photography and capturing moments through photos and dance. Brandon Dumlao is a hip hop dancer. It has been a whirlwind week for Brandon, who found out he was returning to the competition just days ago. When he surprised Pauline, he broke down crying. The new couple met with choreographer Jason Gilkison to learn the smooth waltz. Although it's one of the oldest styles of dance, Jason created a young, contemporary love story. Dancing to "You Light Up My Life" by Whitney Houston, you couldn't tell that Pauline and Brandon have only been dancing together for just over one day. Mary said the couple's "chemistry was dynamic in such a short period of time." However, the judges noticed some technical issues with Brandon and Pauline's smooth waltz.

Kathryn McCormick is a contemporary/lyrical dancer who loves being outside. Legacy Perez is a street performer who hopes to channel his energy during his performances. The couple met with hip hop choreographer Dave Scott. Dave created a prehistoric routine about the first time two cave dwellers heard hip hop music. Kathryn said the pair can't be too serious during this humorous routine, and Legacy said that facial choreography is important in this number. Dancing to "On & On" by Missy Elliott, Kathryn and Legacy put on a very amusing performance and they danced it well. All of the judges thought Kathryn and Legacy not only danced it well, but they had amazing chemistry. Nigel said, "This is another couple I'm looking forward to seeing develop across the season."

Young couple Mollee Gray and Nathan Trasoras were the last couple of the night. Nathan is a musical person, playing the piano and trumpet. Mollee is a goofball who loves spreading her cheer and energy. The couple met with Doriana Sanchez to learn a disco number that was inspired my Mexican wrestling. The couple held their difficult starting pose as Cat introduced them. Dancing to "Turn The Beat Around (Pablo's 12" Remix)" by Gloria Estefan, the number was high energy and glitzy. The judges agreed that Mollee and Nathan are an adorable couple with great chemistry, charisma, and a fun and up-beat attitude.

After the 10 performances, it was time for the judges to reveal who was in the bottom and chosen to dance for their life. Nigel clarified, "We will be judging them on everything that we know of them since they entered the competition this season." And with that, Ariana, Brandon, Pauline, and Russell were called out as the bottom four.

Ariana danced a strong contemporary solo with leaps and emotion to "Darkest Hour" by Charlotte Martin. Russell performed a raw and dirty krump that Lil' C would call "buck" to "Give The Drummer Sum" by Black Milk. Pauline performed a contemporary routine with a little Latin spice to "Magalenha" by Sergio Mendes. Lastly, Brandon danced slow hip hop to "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room" by John Mayer.

The judges conferred and then revealed that they were unanimous on both of their decisions. Nigel reminded the dancers that to get to the Top 20 this season you had to be an amazing dancer. They want to see a little more passion from Pauline, but it was Ariana who was sent home. She's a strong dancer, but they wanted more charisma from her. The girls' song was "Never Say Never" by the Fray. After her clips package, Ariana said "Just being here is amazing. I wouldn't change it for a second."

As for the guys, Brandon will be leaving tonight, but Nigel said it's an unfortunate sequence of events. The rules of the competition state that once you come on the show, you can't reenter if you make the Top 20, but Nigel said he is going to talk to Fox to see if they can bend the rules under this circumstance to bring him back next season. The guys' exit song was "Where It Ends" by 16 Frames. Brandon said he loves this cast, they're amazing, and they deserve where to be where they are now.

Brandon and Ariana have left the show. What did you think of this decision? And what are your thoughts on Billy Bell and Noelle Marsh's situations? Talk about it here.

Top 18 Performances

This week of So You Think You Can Dance mirrored last week in terms of show structure. The Top 18 dancers performed, and at the end of the show, the judges had four dancers perform solos, and then cut one girl and one guy. Starting next week, America will vote for their favorite dancers. The host with the most, Cat Deeley,  introduced Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, Nigel Lythgoe, and the empty chair for Paula Abdul. Nigel announced that this season's Top 20 member Billy Bell (who left due to illness before the competition started) may enter the audition round next season starting at the Top 100 in Vegas. Billy's replacement, Brandon Dumlao, can reapply for the show next season. On to the performances!

Noelle Marsh was injured last week and had to sit out from the Top 20 show. She's back with her partner Russell Ferguson and ready to dance. This week, we learned what each dancer thinks are the best and worst things about their partners. Noelle loves Russell's singing voice, but doesn't like that he always hides his eyes behind sunglasses. Russell enjoys Noelle's sense of humor, but would appreciate if she stopped getting injured while dancing. Russell and Noelle met with Jamal Sims, a choreographer who is new to the show. The theme of his hip hop dance is a lovey dovey couple whose tennis match turns into a death match. Noelle and Russell took the stage and danced an extremely fast-paced number to "Move Shake Drop Remix" by DJ Laz, Flo Rida & Casely. They even danced with tennis rackets in their hands. The judges thought it was good, but that the dance overpowered the dancers. Although they thought Russell won the match, you couldn't tell that Noelle has been injured.

Ashleigh Di Lello and Jakob Karr have been partners for two weeks now. Jakob said the worst thing about Ashleigh is that her mane of hair whips him in the face when they dance. He likes that she's a super sweaty girl, and together they're slipping and sliding in each other's sweat. However, Ashleigh thinks the worse thing about Jakob is his sweat, which becomes a gross and hazardous mess when these partners work together. What she likes best about Jakob is the way he dances. The pair met with Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin to learn a Viennese Waltz inspired by a bride and groom's first dance at their wedding. The dance started off with a kiss (what did Ryan think of this?!) and it was a graceful performance to "At Last" by Etta James. The judges were loving this pairing of Ashleigh and Jakob. They agreed that Ashleigh is showing a great deal of growth, and although this wasn't Jakob at his best, he is a beautiful dancer.

Victor Smalley said what's best about his partner Bianca Revels is that she is so loud you could never lose her. Although, Victor has been losing her as she changes her hairstyle all the time and confuses him. Bianca thinks that Victor has the best laugh; however, she doesn't understand why he always feels the need to wear bright colors. The couple met with Tyce Diorio to learn Broadway choreography to "Maybe God Is Tryin' To Tell You Something" from The Color Purple soundtrack. This Southern church dancing felt natural to Bianca, but unnatural to Victor. The duo took the stage and performed the energetic routine. The judges thought that Victor and Bianca didn't get into the characters of the piece enough and focused too much on the actual dance itself. That being said, Mary thought the dance was entertaining and very good.

Nathan Trasoras likes Mollee Gray's big, bright personality and she helps him to be less shy. What Nathan doesn't like about Mollee is how frequently she has to visit the restroom while they're rehearsing. Mollee said the best thing about Nathan is that he's attractive and it's easy to have chemistry with him. The worst thing about him, she said, is that he gets distracted really easily. The pair met with Bollywood choreographer Nakul Dev Mahajan to learn a number that was quick, powerful, and rhythmic. They took the stage in front of a great big sun and Nathan danced with a sword. Mollee and Nathan tackled tricky Bollywood handwork and footwork. The judges loved the couple's energy and have witnessed Mollee transform into a more mature dancer. Nigel was impressed with Nathan's pirouettes, strength, and control.

Phillip Attmore's favorite thing about Channing Cooke is her eyes. He doesn't like that she could probably beat him up. Channing likes that Phillip is always smiling, but she doesn't like how talkative he is. The couple pulled Samba out of the hat, so they met with Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin who choreographed a classic competition samba. Both dancers were out of their element in this style, but they took the stage with smiles and danced to "Maracatu Funk" by The Samba Squad. According to the judges, it was evident that the couple was struggling with this number. However, Adam was impressed with Channing's hip movements and liked the supportive partnership between Phillip and Channing.

Karen Hauer loves how sweet Kevin Hunte is, but she doesn't like the amount of time he spends on his hair. Kevin thinks the best thing about Karen is that she's beautiful and dynamic; however, those qualities hypnotize the judges who forget that Kevin was dancing on stage with her. Last week, Karen got to dance in her own style, and this week it was Kevin who was in his zone. They met with Tabitha and Napoleon D'umo to learn a car themed hip hop routine. Wearing some sexy jumpsuits and dancing to "Ice Cream Paint Job" by Dorrough, this couple had all of the right moves. Once again, Karen made Adam Shankman fall out of his chair - literally! Mary not only kept Karen on the Hot Tamale Train, but she told Kevin to hop aboard with her because he was phenomenal too.

Kathryn McCormick likes that Legacy Perez can speak many languages, but she dislikes the cricket whistle he makes to emphasize awkward silence. Legacy loves that he can relate to Kathryn because they're both emotional, but he dislikes that she is always beating him up unintentionally during rehearsals. The pair met with contemporary choreographer Stacey Tookey, who created a dance about a woman struggling with fear, and Legacy would be playing the part of Fear. During rehearsal, we also saw Stacey's hands-on approach to dance instruction. Kathryn and Legacy danced a very powerful and moving routine to "2 Steps Away" by Patti LaBelle. They showed strength, trust, and commitment. The judges praised Stacey for her "incredibly special" piece. They all noticed how much Legacy has changed as a dancer and how quickly the transformation happened. They also said that Kathryn has been nailing it each week and is becoming a stand-out dancer in the competition.

The newly formed couple of Pauline Mata and Peter Sabasino were the next team to perform. Peter likes that Pauline has been documenting the whole SYTYCD journey on her camera. However, he dislikes her passion for purchasing and collecting sneakers. Pauline likes that Peter comes from a big family because it allows him to treat the Top 20 as family. The worst thing about Peter in her eyes is that he thinks he's a ladies' man. Pauline and Peter met with Wade Robson to learn a jazz routine. The always creative Wade said that the story of this dance is that Vincent Van Gogh discarded an earlier draft of Starry Night that he created with people as the subjects of the painting. These vengeful people are now coming back to torment Van Gogh. Dancing with creative set pieces and costumes to George Baker Selection's "Little Green Bag," these two dancers really got into the characters they were asked to portray. The judges thought the piece would be one that not everyone would get, but they loved the dancers' commitment to the character and choreography.

The couple closing out the night was Ellenore Scott and Ryan Di Lello. Ellenore dislikes Ryan's obsession with protein shakes and protein bars, but she permits it because his muscles allow him to be her personal bodyguard. Ryan likes Ellenore's quirky personality, but he thinks her abnormal personality is alien-like and he fears she might abduct him. The pair met with Argentine Tango Leonardo Barrionuevo and Miriam Larici to learn an Argentine Tango with some serious lifts. Dancing to Astor Piazzolla's "Violentango," Ellenore's dress got caught on her heel, but the couple's dancing and facial expressions never revealed any sort of problem. The routine was smoldering and executed well. All three judges gave Ellenore and Ryan a standing ovation. They were amazed that the dress mishap didn't faze the dancers. The judges were also pleased with the laser-eyed stare down and connection between the two dancers. Nigel even said, "I don't know another couple on the show this season that could've done it any better than you two."

After witnessing nine amazing dances, the judges had three couples step forward: Noelle and Russell, Bianca and Victor, and Channing and Phillip. Russell and Channing were told they were safe.

Noelle was the first soloist and danced to "For a Reason" by Zhane. Her contemporary piece was full of emotion, and you definitely couldn't tell she was in a full leg brace last week.

Victor took the stage next and danced to "Navras" from the Matrix Revolutions (soundtrack). Like Noelle, Victor performed a really powerful contemporary routine and left it all out there on the dance floor.

Bianca tapped to "Tootsee Roll" by 69 Boyz. She performed a fun and youthful routine, especially when paired with that song choice.

Phillip tapped to "Almost Like Being In Love" by Nat "King" Cole. Just like Channing mentioned, Phillip was smiling the entire time.

When it was time for the moment of truth, the judges looked glum. Nigel said, "I don't think either of the girls were at their best in their duets," but he thought their solos were incredible. The judges were not unanimous in their decision. They admired Bianca's growth across the seasons, but thought that Noelle's solo was, without a doubt, "dancing for her life," so they had to let Bianca go. Both girls were crying as the footage rolled to this season's girls' exit song: "Never Say Never" by the Fray. Bianca was charming as always and said, "Out of all the seasons that I auditioned for, I felt like I belonged in this one because of the people."

Nigel said he was upset with the next decision and immediately said, "Phillip step forward. Sorry sir, we're letting you go." Nigel said it broke his heart to let two tappers go. All of the Top 18 dancers were crying. After Phillip's exit footage to "Where It Ends" by 16 Frames, he said, "My father passed away just about a week and a half ago, and more than half the dancers were at my father's funeral." He said the journey has been crazy and amazing and he knows his father is smiling down on him from heaven. By the end of the show, not only was every dancer crying, but Cat could barely say goodnight because she was choked up too.

Wow. What an emotional end to the night! It seems like this is a really tight knit group of dancers. What are your thoughts about the episode? Who impressed you? Which dance was your favorite? Chat about it in the community forums.

Episode 13 - 11/10/09

Top 16 Performances

It's time for America to begin voting for their favorite dancer! The Top 16 dancers were introduced by the lovely Cat Deeley in a Roland Mouret dress and Givenchy shoes. Tomorrow, the three couples with the lowest number of votes will "dance for their lives." As usual, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe waved hello. The Season 5 So You Think You Can Dancers sat in the bleachers. Nigel mentioned that tickets are now available for the Dizzy Feet Foundation's first charity event at the Kodak Theatre on November 29. The event will include the Season 5 SYTYCD finalists, performances by the scholarship recipients, and more. To purchase tickets for the event, visit the event page on the Ticketmaster site.

Karen Hauer and Kevin Hunte kicked off the night. This week, we learned a little more about each of the dancers. Karen first auditioned for SYTYCD with her husband, and tonight she revealed that they have since grown apart and are getting divorced. Kevin has been to London, Italy, and China, which have all influenced his style of hip hop. Karen and Kevin drew Hustle out of the hat this week. They met with choreographer Maria Torres-O'Connor who created a story where the girl will be asking the guy to dance. Taking the stage to "Come To Me" by France Joli, Kevin and Karen pulled off this fast-paced but sexy dance number. The judges were impressed with Kevin's performance, and Nigel said it was great to see a street dancer pull off wonderful double pirouettes, have great lines, and perform a strong jete. For the third week in a row, the judges loved Karen and they think she'll be in the competition for a long time. The night had only begun, and Karen and Kevin were sitting pretty on Mary's Hot Tamale Train!

Next to share their fun facts with us were Ashleigh Di Lello and Jakob Karr. Ashleigh considers herself a book nerd because of her interest in political science, history, and her experience as an intern in Washington D.C. Jakob is best friends with last season's winner of SYTYCD, Jeanine Mason. The couple met with choreographer Mandy Moore to take on a jazz routine. Joining Jakob and Ashleigh on stage would be a cane, Mandy explained, which would be an extension of their dancing. Dancing to "Relax" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Jakob and Ashleigh really got into the characters in the jazz piece and incorporated the cane almost flawlessly into their performance. The judges loved the partnering between Ashleigh and Jakob and they're so impressed with Ashleigh's intensity, growth, and performance. They thought Jakob was stunning and Nigel noticed that Jakob changes to suit the characters, much like character dancer Joel Grey.

Peter Sabasino volunteers with an organization called SPIN, through which he teaches dance to special needs participants. Despite her tiny size, Pauline Mata loves to eat, and she eats constantly. Peter and Pauline drew the Quickstep this week, which has been notoriously nicknamed the "Kiss of Death" on So You Think You Can Dance. They met with choreographers and American Ballroom Champions JT & Tomas, who have never choreographed for SYTYCD before. The choreographers explained the theme of their piece: a Navy guy is entranced by a hula girl. Dancing to "Hey Baby! (Shake Those Hula Hips)" by Big Kahuna & The Copa Cat Pack, Peter and Pauline used their fancy footwork to move around the stage rapidly. The judges said that the execution of the Quickstep wasn't technically up to par, however they loved the entertaining performance Peter and Pauline pulled off.

Kathryn McCormick went on a mission trip to Costa Rica to build sidewalks and give gifts. Legacy Perez loves soccer and could've played pro, but chose to channel his energy into dance instead. The pair met with Tony Award-winning choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler to learn a Broadway routine with lots of character and story. Plus, Andy has promised fast choreography. Dancing to "I Wanna Be Like You" by Swingin' Fireballs, Legacy and Kathryn danced a showy routine about a man who wasn't spending enough time with his lady. All three judges continued to be impressed with Legacy's growth and Nigel called him an "inspiration for the show's choreographers." They felt that Kathryn's dancing was a little juvenile and they wanted to see her portray a vixen, but Adam said her dancing was adorable.

A new partnership was formed this week when Channing Cooke and Victor Smalley were paired together. Victor, our neon aficionado, used to be a hard core Gothic rocker, but he's obviously grown out of that phase. Channing used to race lawn mowers competitively and was quite good at it. They met with Stacey Tookey to learn a dance in both of their styles - Contemporary. Stacey mentioned that the theme of the piece was a toxic relationship. They danced to "Be Be Your Love" by Rachael Yamagata and showed a natural chemistry on stage. The judges unanimously believed that the pair danced the piece well, but they weren't blown away. Mary said that Channing's "a beautiful, strong woman" and that Victor was fun to see in his element.

Ellenore Scott is six different ethnicities (Mexican, African American, American Indian, Italian, Hawaiian, and Filipino). Ryan Di Lello is an extreme sports junkie and aspires to play a superhero in an action movie. The couple met with the King of Krump, Lil C, to learn a hip hop routine focused on timing, swagger, and synergy. Since he's a ballroom dancer, Ryan was really nervous about taking on hip hop. He's not used to getting "down and dirty," so to get motivated, Ellenore, Ryan, and Lil C chanted "Swag it out!" The couple took the stage to "Lost Boiz Anthem" by Tha J-Squad and they were dressed like a pair of skydiving thieves. Adam thought Ryan was the most transformed dancer of the night because he was able to move well and get down for a guy his size. Mary thought Ellenore and Ryan did a good job, but it wasn't something to scream over.

Mollee Gray has been deaf in her left ear since she was a baby. When he's not dancing, Nathan Trasoras likes to Jet Ski. The two met with choreographer Gustavo Vargas to learn Salsa choreography. Gustavo described the type of Salsa he taught Mollee and Nathan as "Club Salsa."  In order to pull off this number, these cute dancers would need to become sexy on the dance floor. Dancing to "Quimbara" by Johnny Pacheco, Nathan and Mollee did their best to pull off this hot and steamy piece, but the judges thought they fell a little short. They agreed that although the dancers weren't synchronized and were lacking chemistry for the first time, they're fan favorites and Mary called them "a dream team."

Noelle Marsh and Russell Ferguson were ready to end the night with a bang. Noelle is from a big family and is inspired to dance by her brother, who had a stroke at a young age and lost use of one arm. Russell is an artist that draws, sketches, and paints. They met with Sean Cheesman, who is new to the U.S. version of SYTYCD, to learn an Afro Jazz routine. Sean explained that the story of this piece is that Russell's a frog and Noelle's an African princess. Russell said he was excited to play a quirky character. Noelle and Russell performed a strong routine to "Frog Dance" by Mickey Hart & Planet Drum, and the princess ended up kissing the frog at the end of the dance. Mary put Russell on the Hot Tamale Train and Nigel called him "the star of the season." Nigel also said that Noelle was great in this routine.

After a recap of the eight performances, Cat asked the judges who they thought were in danger of receiving the lowest number of votes. Nigel chose Ryan and Ellenore, Mary selected Nathan and Mollee, and Adam agreed with both Mary and Nigel.

Top 16 Results

For the very first time this season, we found out how America voted...this was So You Think You Can Dance's live results show! Tonight, the bottom six dancers performed solos and then cut one guy and one girl. For the first time since the Meet the Top 20 show, the remaining dancers took the stage as a group to perform together. This week, they performed a Dave Scott Hip Hop piece to Warrior, Pt. 2" by Lloyd Banks. This tribal themed dance was powerful and the makeup, hair, and costumes really helped set the theme.

The first three couples arrived on the stage and included Ellenore and Ryan, Channing and Victor, and Kathryn and Legacy. Ellenore and Ryan had a difficult time with their down and dirty Hip Hop routine, and America agreed with the judges - they are in the bottom two. Channing and Victor took on a contemporary routine by Stacey Tookey last night and did a good job. Kathryn and Legacy danced a Broadway number and the judges thought Legacy shined and that Kathryn wasn't as great as she had been the previous few weeks. America voted and both couples were safe.

Back from commercial break, Season 3's Dominic Sandoval quizzed the audience members on dance terms and had them perform. The next three couples brought out on stage were Ashleigh and Jakob, Pauline and Peter, and Noelle and Russell. Jakob and Ashleigh's jazz routine kept them safe. Peter and Pauline performed a Quickstep that wasn't technically perfect, but it was entertaining. Noelle and Russell performed an Afro Jazz routine that the judges loved. America voted and Pauline and Peter were in the bottom three couples.

The last spot in the bottom was either for Karen and Kevin or Mollee and Nathan. Last night's votes put Karen and Kevin in the bottom, which meant Mollee and Nathan were safe. Nigel did not agree with America's opinion, and said that based on dance, Karen and Kevin were better than Mollee and Nathan last night.

Next, the viewers were in for a treat when dancers from the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre performed a contemporary piece to "Episodes" by Robert Ruggieri. Meanwhile, the six dancers waited nervously backstage and prepared to dance a solo to keep their spot in the competition.

It was time for the dancers to perform their solos, and first up was Ellenore, who danced in her quirky "Lockerina" style to "Eleanor" by Alexa Woodward. Next, Ryan danced to "Jump With My Baby" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and had a military homecoming look to him. Ryan danced with personality and charm, but he slipped a little at the end of his tumbling pass. Pauline may be little but she used the whole stage when she performed to "Took the Night" by Chelley. Peter bravely tap danced a cappella, and his fancy footwork provided a good beat.  Next, Karen took the stage and performed a sexy solo to "Celia Y Tito" by Celia Cruz & Tito Puente. Rounding out the solos was Kevin, who danced to "I Question Mark" by So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Wade Robson.

The judges conferred during the commercial break and were ready to announce their decision. Nigel gave a note to everybody and said that the judges did not believe that any of the six performances lived up to the solos we saw over the summer during Season 5. He told Karen, "Without question you are one of the most smoldering and sultry Latin dancers we've ever had on SYTYCD. His hypothesis is that the young female voters are intimidated by Karen's sensuality and therefore didn't vote for her. He warned Ellenore that when performing a quirky solo, it's important not to lose the competitive edge in the dance. Nigel told Pauline that she's "gotten by on charisma and personality more than dance." The judges' unanimous decision was to send Pauline Mata home.

The judges were unanimous in their decision on which guy to send home. Nigel told Ryan that he needs to land his tumbling if he's going to put it in his solo, but his partner work has been good. The judges felt that Peter's star quality hasn't come out yet. Kevin has been improving during the competition, so they are keeping him. Ultimately, the judges decided to send Peter Sabasino home, making Ryan safe.

Since Pauline and Peter are leaving the competition, the rest of the couples remain in tact for next week. Did you agree with the decision to send Pauline and Peter home? Talk about the show in the community forums.

Top 14 Performances

Last week we said goodbye to Peter Sabasino and Pauline Mata, so this week only seven couples were left. The Top 14 took the stage to battle it out for America and for the judges: Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe.

Throughout the night we got to see videos and pictures of the dancers when they were younger, but first we got to see the judges' childhood pictures.

Jakob Karr and Ashleigh Di Lello kicked off the night. Ashleigh was an energetic child who loved to entertain. Her most memorable dance performance was the night before she fell ill for six years. Jakob was into theater and when he started to become "chunky" he turned to dance and never looked back. They met with hip hop choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon to learn a routine about a couple in love and the girl thinks everything is fine, but the guy has actually been cheating on her. Dancing to "Watcha Say" by Jason Derulo, Jakob and Ashleigh pulled off the hip hop technique and characters they were asked to portray. The judges loved how consistently amazing Jakob has been and Adam told him "you're about as sure a bet for the Top 10 as there ever was on the show." Ballroom expert Mary Murphy told Ashleigh, "You are a star tonight and I was constantly just drawn to you time and time again. I cannot believe how tight, hard-hitting, and believable your passion was in that dance."

Karen Hauer was a quiet and well-behaved child in Venezuela. When she first moved to NY she learned the language of dance. Kevin Hunte, the oldest of six kids, was a late bloomer who started dancing at age 17. He performed a Michael Jackson tribute after MJ passed and it was Kevin's most memorable dance experience. Karen and Kevin met with Spencer Liff, who made his SYTYCD debut this episode. Spencer taught them a Broadway routine about a guy who has been given bad news and the girl is trying to cheer him up. Dancing to "If My Friends Could See Me Now" from Sweet Charity (2005 Broadway Revival Cast), Karen and Kevin danced in a style that was completely different than their actual styles. Nigel wanted to see more humor in their dancing. Mary and Adam weren't blown away, but they talked about how they have liked Karen and Kevin throughout the competition.

When Russell Ferguson was younger, he was very outgoing and not afraid to perform in front of people. When he was about 8 years old, Russell performed "The Hat Show" and performed Michael Jackson's work. Noelle Marsh was a wild thing and mischievous. She wasn't the greatest dancer as a kid  but she was not afraid of getting out there and shaking her hips. The couple met with choreographer Eddie Simon to dance the Foxtrot.

Noelle and Russell were supposed to dance the Foxtrot during the Top 20 performances week, but Noelle hurt her knee and had to sit out. She was excited to get to perform it now. The partnership in the Foxtrot is about balance, and so is this krumper and contemporary dancer's relationship as dance partners. Taking the stage to "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)" by Michael Buble (with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings), the pair was able to make up for their Top 20 Foxtrot mishap. Nigel told Russell that in a few short weeks his Foxtrot has improved immensely. "There's no question you are a star." Mary said that Noelle looked "elegant and smooth. Your knees and footwork are correct. And you were tracking correctly. You were absolutely gorgeous in your movement."

Channing Cooke was a hyper kid so she took dance to get her energy out. When she was six years old, she performed a "Stray Cat Strut" which resonated with her. Victor Smalley said he was a brat who got lost in department stores. Several years ago, Victor performed a Bolero dance and has since mastered his turns. The contemporary couple met with Tyce Diorio to learn jazz choreography about two curious eclectic blackbirds coming out to play in a fun way. Performing to "Blackbird" by Bobby McFerrin, the couple started and ended their routine by dancing in a flexible cage on stage. When the couple met with Cat after their performance, Victor said that during rehearsal Channing pecked Victor's head and he got five stitches. Victor humorously said that he wanted six to represent this season. The judges said that Channing finally found herself and looked like she had a good time on stage. Nigel said that Victor has matured as a man since auditions, but some of his competitors are growing and catching up to him.

When Kathryn McCormick was young, she was extremely shy, but her mom owns a dance studio and they danced together for her first performance. Legacy Perez was a rebellious child whose grandpa used to bribe him to dance, and he is thankful for it. The couple met with Tony Meredith to take on a Paso Doble about an Admiral who comes into port and sees his lover who he's longing to be with, but they're both angry at each other. "This is the Paso Doble from hell," snickered Tony Meredith. Kathryn and Legacy took the stage to "Pusuit" from Ka (Cirque du Soleil soundtrack) and showed amazing intensity, strength, and passion in their dance. The judges thought Kathryn did a wonderful job of dancing in the character that was required for the piece. For the fourth week in a row, the judges were impressed with Legacy's growth as a dance, increase in stamina, and ability to take on any character that's thrown his way. Nigel said he'd be proud to see Legacy in the Top 10 and Adam thinks if he keeps up the work, Legacy can go all the way.

Next we got a Dizzy Feet Foundation update as the show checked in with the dancers affected by the scholarships. The Dizzy Feet Foundation gala will be held at the Kodak Theater. Read more about the gala.

Ellenore Scott was a sassy little girl and never listened to authority in dance class. Ryan Di Lello started dancing at age 4 and it came naturally to him because his entire family dances. Ellenore and Ryan meet with Season 2 runner-up Travis Wall to learn an emotional contemporary routine about a reunited couple. Did anyone notice Season 3's Jaimie Goodwin assisting them with choreography? Ellenore and Ryan took the stage to perform a fast and physical routine to "Your Ex-Lover's Dead" by Stars. The judges thought Travis has continued his streak of brilliant choreography, and Nigel said that the performance probably cemented the couple's place in the competition for the following week. Nigel called Ellenore "one of the sharpest tools in the box this season." Mary said that Ryan is "an inspiration to ballroom kids." Adam had a feeling that both Di Lello's will end up on tour.

Closing out the night was Mollee Gray and Nathan Trasoras. Nathan is the youngest of three brothers and he said he was a bit of a spoiled brat. He used to watch his brothers dance which got him into dance. When Nathan was 10 years old, he choreographed his own dance without ever taking classes. Mollee was a diva and acted like a grown up when she was little. Decked out in makeup, she owned the stage in her first ever dance performance. The couple met with Laurieann Gibson to learn a pop jazz number. In Laurieann's boot camp-style rehearsal, Mollee was known as "Blondie," and a lot of screaming and soul searching occurred during rehearsal. Dancing to Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," Nathan and Mollee performed an energetic and synchronized dance. Mary was glad to have the "Dream Team" back and said that Mollee was perfection. Nigel said that Nathan is one of the most technically gifted dancers they've had on the show, but he needs to get into competitive mode.

At the end of the night, Cat asked the judges who may be in danger of going home and all three judges said Karen & Kevin. Do you agree with the judges? What was your favorite dance of the night? Talk about it in the SYTYCD community and tune in Wednesday for the Top 14 results show.

Top 14 Results

Thousands of Dance hopefuls tried out for Season 6 and within one hour, only 12 would remain. Cat Deeley brought the first two couples out on stage and it was Ashleigh & Jakob and Karen & Kevin. America agreed with the judges that Ashleigh & Jakob performed a brilliant hip hop routine, whereas Karen & Kevin's Broadway number was a little lackluster. Ashleigh & Jakob got to relax in the audience and Karen & Kevin would be dancing solos at the end of the show.

Next, Ellenore & Ryan, Noelle & Russell, and Channing & Victor took the stage. Cat reviewed the results with the contestants. America was as moved by Ellenore & Ryan's contemporary piece as the judges were, so they were safe. Noelle & Russell and Channing & Victor both had strong performances last night, but the voters dialed in for Noelle & Russell's Foxtrot more than they did for Channing & Victor's jazz dance.

The last two couples to find out their fate were Mollee & Nathan and Legacy & Kathryn. Legacy & Kathryn's fiery Paso Doble won over the voting audience, leaving Mollee & Nathan in danger of being sent home.

As the six dancers warmed up for their solos backstage, SYTYCD Bollywood choreographer Nakul Dev Mahajan took the stage with NDM Bollywood Dance Productions and danced an upbeat number to "Desi Girl" from Dostana (original soundtrack).

Then it was time for the six contestants to "dance for their life." A leather-pant clad Karen Hauer danced a solo to "Break On Through" by The Doors. Hip hop dancer Kevin Hunte performed to "Freeze" by T-Pain feat. Chris Brown. Channing Cooke took the stage to dance in her style to "The Face" by RyanDan. Victor Smalley showed his contemporary technique to "Baby's Romance" by Chris Garneau. Mollee Gray got jazzy to "Let Me Think About It (Radio Edit)" by Ida Corr vs. Fedde Le Grand. Nathan Trasoras danced a contemporary piece to "So Insane" by Discovery.

As the judges went backstage to deliberate, the audience was treated to a special musical guest as guitarist and singer Orianthi performed her single, "According to You."

The judges were unanimous with both of their decisions. Nigel reminded the dancers that the decision is based on everything in the competition. Mollee received praise from Nigel: "You really proved tonight that you can dance like a woman ...You showed everyone in the competition what dancing for your life really means." As a result, Mollee was safe and either Channing or Karen would be eliminated. Nigel mentioned that Channing's technique is better than her performance, and Karen's performance is better than her technique. The judges decided to go with performance, so Channing was sent home. Channing said she was grateful for the opportunity because of "the people she met through the experience" and she said she loves each and every one of them.

Nigel believed that Nathan learned his lesson since last week and said, "I think tonight you proved what a good dancer you are." It was no surprise after hearing such praise that Nathan was safe. Nigel warned Victor that although his pirouettes are beautiful, this is not "America's Favorite Pirouetter." Though Kevin is growing as a dancer, the judges believe there's still a long way for him to go. Ultimately, the judges chose to let Kevin go. From the SYTYCD experience Kevin "learned that if you put your mind to something and you work real hard it will come back to you."

On Tuesday, the Top 12 dancers will perform two dances each. You won't want to miss watching the last time these couples dance together before they change partners.
