So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Premiere Pt. 1

So You Think You Can Dance is back for a fifth season. The show traveled to six different cities and met thousands of dancers. Which dancers from last year will return for a second chance at making the Top 20? Is someone going to sustain an audition injury? Would "Sex" return for another audition? Only time would tell...

The first stop was in the city that never sleeps- New York City. And boy, did it look cold! Hopefully there would be some hot talent in this crowd. Host Cat Deeley braved the weather and the early hour to bust some moves with the Dance hopefuls.

Judging the New York dancers were Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Tabitha and Napoleon D'umo. Husband and wife choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon created some of America's favorite hip hop routines last year, and they also sat on the judging panel at times. It's good to have them back for their second season. The rules of the hometown auditions are the same as in past seasons. If a dancer is great, they get a ticket to the finals in Las Vegas, Nevada. If not, they go home. If the judges are torn, the dancers will be asked to stick around to perform choreography later.

Kicking off the season is Gabi Rojas, a young woman who was born and raised in the circus, and is a girl of many talents. Unfortunately, Gabi is struggling with rheumatoid arthritis. You can't help but root for this girl! She dances a great contemporary routine and will excel with Mia and Sonya's choreography. Nigel said he'd be surprised if she's not in this year's top 20, and this was one of the best auditions he's seen in five years. Gabi got Mary's first "woo" of the season. That didn't take long! Tabitha compared Gabi to a bird, and Gabi is flying to Vegas.

Storyboard-P & Hobgoblin isn't the name of the new horror flick at the Multiplex, they're two dancers who have come up with their own unique style of dance called "Mutation." The dance style consists of weird contortion moves that make you want to turn your head away from the TV, but you just can't stop watching. What they're doing is amazing, disturbing, and bizarre. I wonder how well they'll handle ballroom routines? They get up and contort on the judges' table, and Napoleon protects the shrieking panel of frightened judges. Nigel called the routine, "Dawn of the Dead- The Musical." The judges liked it, but were confused, so Tabitha threw out the idea of having them stick around for choreography, and the rest of the panel agreed.

The first bad audition came from "Crazy Kate," a West Coast Swing dancer and Lindy Hopper. Kate refers to herself as Crazy Kate because she's crazy about dancing. The judges appreciated her passion, but not her technique, so Kate is going home empty handed.

Peter Sabasino is a tough Italian tap dancer. He was scared to audition last year, but this year he mustered up enough courage to take the stage. Peter's tap routine was great, aside from the tank top and oversized basketball shorts he paired with his tap shoes. Nigel described his look as a "tap dancing boxer." That's not far off! Peter is like Rocky Balboa in tap shoes. The judges' concern was that Peter might only be good at tap, but he said he can dance all styles. After getting a ticket to Vegas, Peter collapses, and says he hopes to be the first tapper in the Top 20 and Top 10 of So You Think You Can Dance.

Tiffany Geigel was born with a spinal deformity called Spinal Thoracic Dysplasia. The doctors told her parents that she wouldn't live long, but Tiffany defied the odds. Here she is, not only alive, but dancing 23 years later. When Tiffany danced, you could tell she's had training and that this is something she's been doing for a very long time. Nigel commended her, saying that her "bravery is stunning." After a standing ovation from judges and audience came the moment of truth. All of the judges admire her and find her to be an inspiration, but she's not right for the competition. Tiffany took the news like a champ and was on her way home.

Season 3 Top 20 finalist Faina Savich is back, but she's not here for a second season of fun. She's here to partner Maksim Kapitannikov. Maksim took the stage with Faina and moved his hips in ways I didn't know hips could move. The judges were so distracted by Faina's beautiful dancing, that they would like for Maksim to stick around for choreography.

Next, we were treated to a montage of a few ballroom dancers who are going straight to Vegas, along with a contemporary dancer. I'm sure we'll be seeing more from them soon!

Nobuya Nagahama claims he's well versed in all different styles of dance, including "Voguing." He does a soft locking routine at light speed, and the judges were impressed, but would like to see how he fares with choreography. Nobuya was a little too honest and said he doesn't enjoy doing other styles of dance. Hmm, maybe this isn't the right show for you, Nobuya!

At the end of day 1, there are 45 dancers learning choreography from Season 3's Lauren Gottlieb, for a chance at a ticket to Vegas. Choreography treated several of the dancers well, including Maksim and Nobuya, who are both headed to Vegas. In sum, 27 dancers from day 1 are packing their bags for Vegas. Not too shabby!

It was day 2 in the Big Apple and Arielle Taylor is up first. Arielle auditioned for Season 3 of So You Think You Can Dance and made it to Vegas. Only a high school student at that time, Arielle admits to growing as a dancer and being ready for the competition this time around. After an amazing contemporary routine, the judges send her to Vegas once again.

A duo of Bolero dancers, Thomas Martin and Amanda Clark, auditioned, but the judges didn't think they were quite good enough. This provided a good segue to some more dancers that weren't up to SYTYCD par, although many provided the judges with a good laugh.

Nina Estrina and Igor Zabrodin are ballroom dancers that specialize in the Latin styles of dance. They've been partners for three years, so if they make it on the show, it will be interesting to see how they do with new partners. Igor spun Nina around so many times you could get dizzy just watching them. Nigel said, "you could put wet clothes on and spin dry them." Igor humorously admits to having done that before. The judges invite Igor and Nina to stick around for choreography to see if they can perform well without each other.

Not afraid of superstition, Kellen Stancil performs a contemporary routine with an umbrella. He danced so well, that Nigel couldn't help but exclaim, "Beautiful!" Mary asked what the umbrella means to Kellen, and he got choked up and said it represents his Aunt who recently passed away. The judges gave him a standing ovation and sent him to Vegas.

Chimezie Nwosu's performance reminded me of Season 4's Twitch. He has that magnetic personality when he dances and he's very comedic with his choreography and timing. The judges all request that Chimezie stick around for choreography.

At the end of day 2, it was time to see how the remaining dancers did with Lauren's choreography. Igor is going to Vegas, but unfortunately Nina is not. Chimezie, along with two other dancers, is going to Vegas as well. A total of 14 dancers from day 2 received tickets to Vegas, for a grand total of 41 semi-finalists from New York auditions.

The next stop for auditions was in Denver, Colorado. It looks cold here, too! Joining Nigel and Mary at the judges' table is Sonya Tayeh, who joined the show last year and choreographed some of the most memorable jazz and contemporary routines of the season. This was Sonya's first time on the judges' panel.

Up first was Kayla Radomski, an 18 year old whose grandparents have been her biggest supporters, and even worked night jobs so they could take her to practice during the day. She performs a contemporary/jazz routine and it's a dance that Sonya will probably really connect with. Kayla seems to have a good personality on and off the stage. The judges loved her arm work and everything else, so she is going straight to Vegas. Her grandparents were so thrilled that her grandfather even shed a few tears. After Kayla's audition we see a montage of very good dancers, and Sonya seems to be moved by every dancer that takes the stage.

Next to audition were Misha Belfer and Mitchel Kibel, a pair of same sex ballroom dancers. At one point in the dance, Mitchel threw Misha on his back, and Misha struggled to get up. The judges sent them to choreography to see how well they would dance with new partners.

At the end of day 1 in Denver, 22 dancers attempt choreography. Mitch and Misha will not be continuing on in the competition, but 11 dancers are going to Vegas after the first day of Denver auditions.

Day 2 in Denver was kicked off with a young lady named Allison Moist, who was dressed as a lion, but she performed with light sabers. It was all very confusing, and the judges found her dance moves to be just as confounding. Allison is headed home, and so are a variety of dancers showcased in a montage of strange performances.

The Holloway brothers are the youngest of 14 siblings. These two were swimmers, but their siblings were all dancers and now they've caught the dancing bug. Elias Holloway is auditioning, but his brother is too young so he is just dancing with him for support. They perform a pop-locking routine that Mary thought was the cutest thing she's seen in 5 years. She also thought the boys were very commercial. The judges send Elias to choreography.

Two very talented dancers from last year's auditions are back- Brandon Bryant and Natalie Reid! Both were the 11th person in the top boys and top girls group, meaning they were the closest to making the show but didn't. Natalie Reid is friends and roommates with Katee Shean, last season's first place girl. Unfortunately, during the ultimate decision for who made it to Season 4, it came down to Natalie and Katee. Katee said if she didn't make it, she wouldn't try out again, but Natalie said she would. That almost made the judges rethink their decision, but ultimately their original selection of Katee for the Top 10 girls remained. During Natalie's audition here in Denver, it's easy to see how she made it so far last season. Her style is similar to Katee's and she really feels the music and the story while she's dancing. The judges couldn't be happier to see her back. Sonya said she is Natalie's biggest fan, and can't even find words to describe her. After hearing such positive remarks, Natalie attempts to hold back tears. Mary loves the organic nature of the dance. Natalie thanked the judges for what happened last year because it motivated her to dedicate this past year to becoming a better dancer. Natalie called Katie to tell her the good news- she's going to Vegas!

Brandon Bryant has a strong body which helps make his contemporary dance moves all the more powerful. After performing a nearly flawless routine, Mary is crying and says, "I have the greatest job in the whole world. If you don't make it to the top 20, I'll die this year." Wow, he better make it because what would So You Think You Can Dance be without Mary Murphy?! Nigel tells him to develop a personality. At this early point in the competition, it doesn't seem like a big deal, but this is a TV show, and if Brandon makes the show he'll need that extra something to get viewers to pick up the phone for him. Of course, Brandon is going to Vegas.

At the end of the day, we check in with the dancers in choreography. Elias Holloway is not going to Vegas, but the judges ask him to come back next year. In sum, 19 Denver dancers are moving on to Las Vegas.

Next up, Miami and Memphis!

Episode 2 - 5/27/09

Season Premiere , Pt 2.

Bienvenido a Miami! The second episode of Season 5 brought the judges to Miami, and joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy on the judging panel was Tyce Diorio. Tyce has choreographed some of Dance's most memorable routines, and is the go-to guy for Broadway choreography.

Kicking off Miami auditions was Tony Riendeau, the inventor of "Tony Style." You may not have heard of "Tony Style," and after seeing his audition, I'm not sure if "Tony Style" will be sweeping the nation just yet. Tony flops around on stage and is not going to Vegas, however he does take a trip to the medic.

Priscilla Marrero is a Miami native, and we meet her while she is dancing on the hot Miami beach sand. If she dances this well on the audition stage, she should be able to earn a ticket to Vegas. Priscilla took the stage and danced with a whole lot of personality and she's quite theatrical, so she won Tyce over. In fact, Tyce said she makes him "happy to be a dancer," and Priscilla became choked up. Nigel and Mary appreciated her skills as well, so she's going to Vegas.

Janette Marara and Romulo Villaverde are a ballroom couple who auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance last season. Janette got cut at the very end of the audition process, but that didn't discourage her from coming back for another try. Romulo didn't make it to Vegas last year, but he hopes to change that this season. They've worked out some new impressive moves and have more experience as a couple now. Their performance impressed the toughest ballroom critic, Mary Murphy, and the two are on their way to Vegas.

Twins Jennifer Guadix & Jessica Guadix taught themselves the art of ballet via textbooks. Despite this ballet background, they auditioned together with a hip hop routine. The judges were not impressed, and the twins are headed home. Perhaps they should pick up some books on hip hop.

Joseph Smith goes by the name "Schawam," which he says is a word that can mean something is good or bad. As if that wasn't confusing enough, Cat observes that he uses it interchangeably with "Schwizam," a term that also excites Joseph. Joseph and all of his energy bounced onto the stage with the universal Schwam hand sign and he danced with humor. Mary jumped on the Schwam bandwagon by the end of the routine. The judges send Joseph to choreography.

Over at choreography, Joseph is the only dancer we were introduced to in the bunch, and the judges send him to Vegas because he worked really hard.

At the end of day one in Miami, 18 dancers received plane tickets to Vegas.

Day two in Miami began with Wislande Letang, a young lady in a bikini top who sauntered around the stage with a lack of enthusiasm. The judges tell Wislande it's a no.

Erik "Silky" Moore has been tapping since he was 10. He has only danced tap and hip hop, but he's serious about tap. Silky mentions that tap is a dying art and that dance shows don't require tap performances from their contestants. He's here to bring tap back! Silky began his routine and even threw in a moonwalk and some breakdancing moves. The judges thought it was a great audition and wanted to know what inspired Erik to take up dance. He mentioned that he was inspired by his brother who was a tapper and was getting a lot of girls from it. Nigel waves a Vegas ticket at him, and he collapses to the floor.

Miss Washington, Paris Torres, got started in pageants because of dance. Will she be more than just a pretty face and congenial attitude? The music began and Paris took the stage in a brown tutu and performed a contemporary/ballet routine to a slow version of Britney Spears' "Toxic." The judges liked the routine and sent Miss Washington to Nevada.

Next, we met three talented contemporary dancers- Henry Rivero, Megan Kinney, and Alex Wong- and all three are going to Vegas.

Geo Smith is an African dancer. He performed a native African dance with drama and aggression, and it was really fun to watch. The judges want to see what other styles of dance Geo can master in choreography.

Talia Rickards married her sweetheart at age 18. They were married almost four years in 2006 when she received the worst news imaginable- her husband was killed in a motorcycle accident. Talia took this hardship as a lesson to live life to the fullest, which is what has inspired her to try out for So You Think You Can Dance. The judges thought her performance was fiery, but they thought it lacked a little technique and substance, so they send Talia to choreography.

Nineteen dancers battle it out in choreography, and both Geo and Talia leave Miami with plane tickets in hand.

Day two in Miami brings the total of Vegas-bound dancers to 32. Not too shabby!

The next stop on the Season 5 audition tour was Memphis, the city of rock ‘n roll and Elvis Presley. Would we see plenty of hip shakers in blue suede shoes? Joining Nigel and Mary at the judges' table was Lil C, who introduced crumping to So You Think You Can Dance and served as a judge during part of Season 4.

The Memphis auditions began with a Special Ops police officer named Marico Flake. Marico explained his dance style, "Memphis juking," as an underground style of Memphis dance that involves bouncing and rhythmic stepping. Sure enough, Marico threw in a quick Elvis inspired move, but it didn't detract from his performance at all. Nigel said this style of dance has been underground for 20 years, and Marico was glad to bring it to the public. Hopefully the fellow jukers won't mind that it's been televised, because I have a feeling many people will attempt this smooth style of street dancing. Lil C said Marico's performance was fundamentally sound and contained great humor. Shockingly the judges said "no to choreography," but that's because he is going straight to Vegas. Marico was thrilled!

Dustin Dorough is a hip hopper with a cop mom. He said, "My mom taught me how to be a man." If Dustin's last name sounds familiar to you, it's because his cousin, allegedly, is Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough. Dustin performed his hip hop routine, and nailed a few moves, albeit none from the hip hop genre. When Nigel questioned this dance as being a hip hop routine, Dustin said he stripped out his power moves because he's just getting over the flu and bronchitis. For someone getting over being ill, Dustin sure has a lot of energy! Lil C offered up the dance style of "tricking" for Dustin to try, because it would be a good way for him to fuse his love of b-boying with his martial arts background. Dustin will not be advancing in the competition, but he promises he'll be back next year. Maybe he'll introduce the audience to tricking.

Chris Carrozza invented his own dance style. Anyone who comes on this show with their own personal invented dance style usually makes the funnies reel, but not Vegas. Chris' style is known as "Electric," which is a mixture of many styles of dance. The music began, and Chris hopped side to side while moving his hands and whirling his dreadlocks around. When the judges critiqued his performance, Chris attempted to leave before Lil C was able to give his feedback, and Nigel explained to Chris that it's rude to walk away. We won't be seeing Chris in Vegas...at least not at semi-final auditions!

Chris' audition provided a nice segue into the "Guide to a Good Audition." Here are the steps to a successful audition, which were accompanied by some entertaining clips:
1) Start with your best move
2) Come dressed to impress
3) Connect with the judges
4) Always follow directions
So take note, Season 6 hopefuls!

Caitlin Kinney's last name may ring a bell. Her sister, Megan, audition in Miami during the first hour of the show, and Caitlin is in Memphis to audition as well. Megan made it to Vegas. Would Caitlin follow in her sister's footsteps? Caitlin began classical ballet training as sophomore in high school. She took the stage and performed an amazing routine which showed off her ballet technique, her gymnastics background, and her grace as a dancer. It is amazing to me that she only started dancing in high school. Talk about a hidden talent! Mary called this her destiny. Caitlin did a one-handed cartwheel to celebrate her advancement to the semi-finals.

We check in with the Memphis dancers from day one who are taking a stab at choreography. Six additional dancers from choreography made it to Vegas.

On the second day of auditions, we meet Anna Dunn. Anna's father took his own life, and Anna has been using dance as her outlet to cope. "I don't have to talk about it, but I can move about it," Anna told Cat. Her dad always supported her having a passion, so she's here to represent him. Anna took the stage and performed a contemporary routine. The judges agreed that she's as cute as a button, but also provided her with some constructive criticism. Nigel thought the routine was a bit over-choreographed, and she just needs to dance with a little more feeling and less head tosses. Mary said that Anna is a diamond in the rough. Lil C can empathize with Anna, as his father took his own life too. He says "you have to connect with that pain each time you step on the stage." All three judges send Anna to choreography.

Travis Prokop is from Texico, New Mexico (it sure has a ring to it!) and is the son of a football coach. Growing up, Travis was picked on because of his passion for dance. The best part of the story is that his tough football coach father allows Travis to be who he is and supports Travis with whatever he chooses to do. Travis performed a lyrical number on the stage, and the judges suggested that Travis needs to work on getting stronger to support his tall frame. But before Travis has time to get buff, he'll have to master choreography with Lauren Gottlieb.

Another dancer from last year's Top 40 semi-finalists is back- Evan Kasprzak. Evan's specialty is Broadway and jazz and this time his older brother is auditioning too. Evan took the stage and he definitely channeled Gene Kelly with this performance, which is what the judges loved about him last year. Evan is on his way to Vegas...again! We'll check in with his brother later in the show.

A second set of twins are auditioning together. Lauren & Lydia Guerra talk in unison, but will they dance in unison? The twins performed a contemporary routine and they're both very talented, but different. Nigel said that Lydia dances to the extremes and Lauren gives more performance. The Guerra girls said they get that critique a lot. The judges send Lydia and Lauren to choreography to see how they dance with other partners.

Evan's brother Ryan Kasprzak is the choreographer behind most of Evan's routines.
Ryan is doing a So You Think You Can Dance first- he's performing a tap routine with a whoopee cushion. This could have gone south, but he's talented so it was very entertaining and has great dance and comic timing. Nigel suggested choreography for Ryan, but Mary and Lil C thought he deserved a ticket to Vegas. With two judges voting for Vegas, there's no need for choreography for Ryan. Both Kasprzak's are on their way to Vegas!

We check in with the dancers in choreography, and it was a great day for Lauren, Anna, Travis, and Lydia- who are all going to Vegas.

At the end of day two in Memphis, 15 dancers are on their way to the semi-finals in Vegas.

Next up, sunny Los Angeles and rainy Seattle!

Episode 3 - 5/28/09

The third episode of the season brought Cat and crew to Los Angeles to search for stars. Los Angeles is also the home of the So You Think You Can Dance tapings and where the finalists reside while they're still in the running to become America's Favorite Dancer.

Joining Nigel and Mary in L.A. is Adam Shankman, who directed the movies Hairspray, Bedtime Stories, and 17 Again. Adam has been a choreographer and judge for the past two seasons of Dance, and his enthusiasm is inescapable. Some familiar Dance faces are in the audience, including Comfort, Josh, and Katee from Season 4.

Bianca Revels is the first contestant to audition. She tried out last year, and you may remember her as the amazing tap dancer who was just shy of making the top 20. Not one to quit, she's back for another try, and this time she has brought her biggest supporter- her mom. Nigel said "cue the music," but Bianca replied, "no music," and let her tap shoes provide the music. There are a handful of talented tappers auditioning this year. Perhaps we'll have our first tapper make the top 20. Mary even got out of her seat to applaud for Bianca, who has been tapping for 17 years. Mary thinks Bianca is the "best female tap dancer we've had on the show." See you in Vegas, Bianca!

Brynelle Blanton and Xavier Blanton are siblings, but they said that people often mistake them for being a couple because they hold hands and don't shy away from public displays of affection. Brynelle and Xavier performed a couples' contemporary routine with lots of passion, but it was a little sloppy. The judges mention that their technique isn't quite there, so the Blanton siblings are headed home, hand in hand.

Debra Lawson is a contemporary dancer who confused the judges by running around the stage and looking up and down. After her performance, Debra stood in front of the judges and said she's concerned with the Dance schedule because she's an Orthodox Jew whose religion may conflict with the obligations of being a contestant. Adam said, "When I'm dancing, that is when I feel closest to God. This may not be your profession, but if it's your passion, keep with it." Debra can take that advice with her as she heads home.

Suzanne Fernandez performs a whimsical routine, and when the judges ask what style of dance that was, she said it was a "Fairy Medicine Dance." Next, John Fleming dances with a painted face. Then, Michael Han performs an interpretive, sassy, on point dance to Rihanna's "Umbrella."

Calico Sequeira is 30 years old, so this is her last chance to make the show before she's "too old." She loves swing dance and said that she even knows a 95 year old who swing dances, so 30 is hardly ancient. Calico danced with a partner and has a lot of energy, but doesn't quite have the level of technique needed to advance in the competition. Nigel said that watching Calico is enjoyable, and dancing with her on a social level would be nice, but she's not at the professional level with her dance. The other judges agreed, and Adam said he'd love to dance with her, and Calico invited him up. Adam takes her up on the offer. Adam Shankman, listed as "21ish" years old, danced some ballroom steps with Calico until the music switched into swing. When the performance ended, Adam received a standing ovation from Nigel and Mary, who invited him to the microphone. They also invited the Dance alumni in the audience to the judges' table. Lauren Gottlieb, Katee Shean, Josh Allen, and Comfort Fedoke are the new panel of judges that Adam must face. After giving Adam their critiques, the four dancers send him to Vegas, and he freaks out.

Asuka Kondoh and Ricky Sun are International Latin Ballroom dancers. They mention that Asians typically don't dance this style, and it is usually danced by Latin Americans or Russians. Asuka and Ricky auditioned last year, and Asuka even made it to the final round before the Top 20 was formed. Nigel was impressed that Ricky could hold his own next to the beautiful Asuka, and he could tell that Ricky has improved. Mary gave the dancers her professional stamp of approval, and both Asuka and Ricky are going to Vegas.

Several other dancers found success at the end of day one in Los Angeles, including a "naughty ballerina."

Nathan Trasoras quit dancing in 8th grade because people made fun of him. With some encouragement from his brother, he went back to dancing. He performs a technically skilled contemporary routine mixed with ballet and the judges can't hide the amazement on their faces. The judges said Nathan's a well-rounded dancer, and they even compare him to some of the best Dance alumni. There's just one problem: Nathan is only 17 years old, so he's not eligible to compete in Season 5. Nigel said he'll hunt him down if he doesn't try-out next year. But then, Nigel decides to give Nathan a ticket to Vegas for Season 6 this fall, so he can bypass the initial audition and head straight to the semi-finals!

At the end of the first day in L.A., 24 dancers are going to Vegas.

It's day two in L.A. and we meet Sammy Ramirez, a former wrestler who learned how to pop and lock in college from a guy who is now in prison. Sammy took the stage and performed a popping routine. He had control over the movement of every part of his body, including his hair. Sammy won over Adam and the rest of the judges. Sammy said he's taken a little lyrical and jazz dance, but the judges want to make sure that Sammy is proficient enough in other areas of dance, so they send him to choreography.

Stacey House performed a frantic routine that was made of ‘80s dance moves. She is headed home empty handed, and was very upset about this.

Amanda Kerby's dad has Multiple Sclerosis, but he has been symptom free for the past several years. Her dad inspires her, and she inspires him. Amanda performed a lyrical routine for the judges. Nigel said he was captivated by her beauty, but not her dance.
After constructive criticism from all the judges, Amanda is going straight to Vegas.

Phillip Chbeeb auditioned for Season 4 of So You Think You Can Dance, but came down with pneumonia during the semi-finals and was forced to withdraw from the competition due to doctor's orders. You also may remember Phillip's exciting dance-off against fellow popper Robert Muraine at last year's finale. This year, Phillip is back, but the judges don't even need to see him audition. Instead, they sent him straight to Vegas.

Phillip remained on the stage to do something unexpected- partner a contemporary dancer named Arielle Coker. Arielle and Phillip met at school, and she was in a bad car accident with her family. Although Arielle and her dad were released from the hospital, her mom remained there for a long period of time, and Phillip took Arielle to the hospital many days after school. Her mom taught Phillip how to partner in 3 days from her wheelchair.
Arielle and Phillip danced for the panel, and the judges thought it was a clever pairing and really liked what they saw from Arielle. Adam likes that she brought out a better dancer in Phillip. Arielle is going straight to Vegas with her pal Phillip.

We see quick auditions from Alexie Agdeppa, Diana Vaden, and Chanel Smith, three talented dancers who are all asked to stay for choreography.

Kevin "Shakiro" Cormier is nicknamed "Shakiro" because he swivels his hips like Shakira. He needs more training to hold a candle to what the other contestants can do, but the judges encourage him to keep dancing for fun, while avoiding competitions.

In choreography we see Sammy, Chanel, Diana, and Alexie. Everyone is going to Vegas! This means that 18 dancers from day two in L.A. are heading to Vegas.

The last stop for auditions is Seattle. So You Think You Can Dance hasn't traveled to Seattle before. It's rainy and gloomy...quite different from the first hour of this show! And guess who's back? "Sex," of course, but we'll get to that in a bit.

Mia Michaels is the guest judge with Nigel and Mary. Mia has served as a choreographer and judge since Season 1. In 2007, Mia won an Emmy Award for her choreography during Season 2.

Christopher Keller specializes in Argentine Tango, East Coast Swing, and International Tango. He also plays with gender roles while dancing. Christopher entered the stage with his partner and danced a routine that lacked energy and skill, but it was still entertaining. Mary is laughing uncontrollably, and the laughter is contagious at the judges' table. The judges aren't sending Christopher to Vegas, but they encourage him to keep dancing socially. Christopher was a gentleman about it and said he hoped he didn't embarrass his partner.

Nick "Nasty" Salzman is an aspiring tattoo artist and break dancer. During his audition, he asked for the music to stop towards the end of the routine because he was tired. He subscribed himself to going home. Mary said that she was going to say yes, but he started to disrespect Nigel, so the judges changed their opinions. Nick Nasty is going home empty handed.

Dmitrious Bistrevsky is a 6'6" b-boy who set his audition to aggressive music. He stated that he's only been breaking for three months, and it shows. The judges tell Dmitri it's a no.

Dmitri's routine of rage provides a segue into a montage of dancers who are bad. Not one person in Seattle is good as of yet, and the judges are starting to get annoyed.

Kelsea Taylor was the next dancer hoping to show the judges that she was worthy of a plane ticket to Vegas. She performed a routine that the judges called zany and beautiful. Mary loved her musicality, and Nigel could tell that Sonya would love Kelsea. The judges send Kelsea to choreography.

There are 23 dancers in choreography, and Kelsea walks away with a ticket to Vegas. In sum, only three dancers from Seattle are going to Vegas.

The judges were hoping for a less stormy day in Seattle on day two of auditions. Kuponohi'ipoi Aweau is a dancer from Hawaii who performed a contemporary dance with a fold-up chair for the judges. The judges really liked Kupono, but Mary mentioned that although some of his moves were masculine, others were feminine. Nigel mentioned that Kupono dances like Season 4's quirky contemporary dancer Mark Kanemura, who also hails from Hawaii. The judges send Kupono to choreography.

"Sex" is the nickname of David Soller, who has tried out every season but the first. Sex is back for his fourth audition, and he also brought back his very supportive mother. But first we'll check in with another dancer.

Leonid Knyshov calls himself "Wise Leo" and is Ukrainian. He danced a spastic performance for the judges and he claims it was a jive routine. Mia requested a battle between Wise Leo and Sex. Sex asked his mom for permission, and his mom approved. Sex and Leo face-off for the "Battle in Seattle!" Round 1 went to Sex and his slinky moves. Round 2 saw floor action from Sex and a spin from Leo, so the judges called it a draw. In the deciding round, it was Sex's shimmy versus Leo's double spin. Then Sex performs the worm, while Leo step dances. Mia and Mary thought Leo won, and Nigel thought Sex won. That means Leo is the winner (although he is going home without a plane ticket), but Nigel was pleased with David's tenacity, and suggested he attends choreography for a reality check. Sex attempted to compare himself to Season 4's Twitch, and America rolled their eyes.

Over at choreography, I felt bad for Sex's partner, but Sex worked hard. Nigel appreciated that he didn't give up, but it's a no. Sex is determined to come back again and again until he makes it to Vegas. However, Kupono is going to Vegas.

Only 8 other dancers will be joining Kupono in Vegas, for a total of 169 dancers that will be narrowed down to just 20.

Next up is Vegas week! The semi-finalists will face all of the choreographers, the most challenging routines, and the judges. Who will make the Top 20? We'll find out on Thursday!

Episode 4 - 06/03/09

Six cities down, and now the best of the dancers are in Las Vegas. Bouncing and twirling down the hallways are 172 contestants. Nigel encourages the dancers to give it their all and enjoy the ride. The judging panel in Vegas consisted of Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Lil C, and Mia Michaels.

First the contestants will perform solos, but the judges will hold off on critiquing the solos at this time. Ballet dancer Alex Wong had the difficult job of going first. From his very first move he had people shouting and "oohing" and "ahhing." Mia had to physically hold her jaw up. Alex's solo was so good that he made the other dancers nervous.

Tony Bellissimo took the stage with a brief case, newspaper, and chair, and he's wearing a suit. He held up the paper at the start of the routine and it had a picture of Nigel's face on it. He also revealed Nigel's face in his briefcase and jacket. Tony's hip hop routine had the judges cracking up, and Nigel was blushing.

We see the first montage of the night, and at this stage of the game all of the dancers are so good that the montages only consist of amazing dance moves now. Nigel calls all 172 dancers onto the stage. They're going to do cuts now, because it's obvious that some dancers aren't as good as others when they're all in the same room together.

The judges make the first couple of cuts and then call out for Tony. They said he has great ideas, but he needs his dancing to match them. However, for now he's staying in Vegas. The cuts narrowed the crowd to 45 less dancers. Hometown audition stand-outs Travis Prokop, Talia Rickards, and Chimezie Nwosu are gone. This cut trimmed the pool down to a quarter less contestants, and the day has just begun!

It was time for first round of choreography, which was hip hop with Tabitha & Napoleon. Gabi Rojas, the circus performer who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, struggled with picking up the choreography. During Gabi's initial audition, Nigel said he'd be surprised if she's not in the Top 20. After her attempt with hip hop in Vegas, the judges said that Gabi is only staying in the competition because of her unique solo earlier in the day. After the hip hop round, 37 more dancers were cut. We're left with 96 contestants at the end of day one in Vegas.

Day two began with a round of ballroom dance choreography. Jean-Marc Genereux and France are back this season, and they choreograph a waltz dance for the semi-finalists to perform. We checked in with Phillip Chbeeb and Arielle Coker, who have been split up for their ballroom routine. Adam observed that Phillip pops his body with each step he takes. They pulled Phillip out of his group to tell him he's not perfect, but he has great energy, so he'll remain in the running. Unfortunately, Arielle has been cut from the competition.

The judges were impressed with Nobuya's ballroom and partnering skills, especially since this isn't the style of dance he is used to. Nobuya was so glad that all of his hard work in ballroom classes leading up to today paid off, and he's reduced to tears.

Sixteen dancers were sent home after the ballroom round.

During the mid-afternoon of day two, the dancers must learn a jazz routine from Sonya Tayeh. At jazz rehearsal, many dancers became injured. There were icepacks and bandages everywhere. Natalie Reid and Brandon Bryant were thriving with the choreography and as partners, and Sonya called them out and used them as an example.

Natalie was in the first group to audition. For some reason, Natalie had an off performance and her dancing seemed to be less inspired than in rehearsal. Because of this, the judges said they love her, but they had to cut her. With Natalie's dismissal, the rest of the dance hopefuls realized that no one was safe. Brandon was very upset over this news, and said she really deserved it, so he's going to work his hardest and fight back the tears to do this for Natalie. After Brandon's jazz routine, Lil C said he's not that impressed with Brandon, and Mia agreed that he doesn't live up to all of the hype that surrounds him. Nigel understood where his colleagues were coming from, but he said he would stick up for Brandon as long as he believes he's fantastic. Nigel encouraged Brandon to strive harder. Overwhelmed by Natalie's departure, Brandon was still upset after finding out he made it to the next round.

Gabi Rojas was back for jazz, and not performing very well. Nigel was bummed and told the panel he was upset that his favorite quirky dancer was letting him down. Debbie Allen was able to deliver the news and express the judges' emotions and disappointment to Gabi. Still believing in Gabi, they offered her the option to dance for her life. When dancing for their lives, dancers must receive at least 3 of the 6 votes from the panel. Gabi performed her quirky, strong solo. All six judges voted for Gabi to stay in the competition, and said that Gabi needs to remind herself who she is when she gets back on the stage. She also needs to be able to pick-up choreography better in order to make it on this show.

Jazz choreography sent seven dancers, including pop-locker Sammy Ramirez, home.

At the end of day two, there was no time to sleep. Cat greeted the dancers and mentioned it is about to get tougher. The remaining dancers will be broken into groups, and each group will pull a CD from a box and has to choreograph and perform a dance to the  music. Surprisingly, a lot of the dancers were excited about this challenge. Sleep is overrated in Vegas, anyway.

It's 7AM on day three, and most of the dancers barely slept. The first group includes Erik "Silky" Moore, the tapper from Miami. The group performs a Broadway routine, but they're struggling a bit. Nigel called this a poor start, and thought the performance was horrific. Debbie thought the routine lacked rhythm. Mia found out this group went to bed before achieving perfection, and she called them out on it. The judges make their decisions- Erik will need to dance for his life later today. Meanwhile, two girls from this group are going home, and one girl and one guy are staying.

The next three groups that performed weren't any better. Brandon Bryant was happy with his group. They took the stage and performed a routine with a lot of group partnering. The judges thought this was the first group where people were fighting for a spot in the competition. Brandon's entire group is continuing on in the competition, but Mia still thinks Brandon needs to prove himself.

Brandon's group changed the pace of the day, because the next few groups were good as well. One group even had a theme and a group name: "Nerdography." This routine was choreographed by Ryan Kasprzak. The judges thought it was really fun and enjoyable, so the whole group is advancing.

At the end of the group round of auditions, 68 dancers are moving on to next phase of the semi-finals. However, there is still one unfinished piece of business- the fate of Erik "Silky" Moore. Silky performed a tap routine and then faced the six judges.  He needed three votes to stick around, but sadly, he received no votes.

The next semi-finals round was contemporary choreography with Mia Michaels, which always drains people of emotion and sweat. Tony Bellissimo has his own quirky style which detracts from the contemporary choreography, so the judges ask him to repeat choreography at the end of the day, instead of performing for his life.

Amanda Kerby, the young lady whose father has MS, was cut after her contemporary routine. Adam encouraged her to come back next year. Nobuya is cut too, but he promised to audition next season.

The Kinney sisters, Megan and Caitlin, were nervous for each other before their contemporary performances. Megan performed first and was safe, but she wouldn't relax until Caitlin made it through. Caitlin says that Megan has more faith in her than she has in herself. After Caitlin's performance, the judges said Caitlin didn't get enough votes, so they asked her to dance a solo immediately. Nigel observed that her "old fashioned" style was bringing her down. Nigel and Debbie gave Caitlin yeses. However, it was a no for Mia, Lil C, and Adam. That meant that Caitlin's fate was in Mary's hands, and Mary gave her the opportunity to stick around. Megan and Caitlin interviewed that this close call brought them closer together.

The other set of siblings, the Kasprzak brothers, performed their contemporary routines. Older brother Ryan went first and he was safe. After Evan's performance, Mia makes him "flea hop" in a circle and off the stage, which doesn't sink into Evan's head right away that it meant he's staying. Once he hopped off the stage, he realized he was safe and was relieved. The judges gave Mia a high-five for the adorable trickery. The brothers were thrilled and emotional.

Paris Torres is safe and very emotional.  A dancer named Vitolio really connected to Mia's choreography, and a dancer named Jason was pleased he was moving on to the next round.

Tony Bellissimo is a nervous wreck as he practices the choreography again. Cat tries to calm him down. Tony takes the stage for a second try at Mia's choreography. It seemed like he had a better mastery over Mia's style this time around, but it was up to the pros. Debbie asked Tony to step forward and he was reduced to tears. He clearly wants this so bad. Debbie shared some good news, Tony received enough votes to continue on. He breaks down on the stage, and all the judges became a little teary eyed. He sobs and tells Cat he loves dance more than anything. Cat cracks up and says she loves "seeing grown men cry."

Thirteen unlucky dancers are cut, and only 54 contestants remain.

The remaining dancers had no clue what was left to do, but Evan and Ryan saw Tyce Diorio in the elevator so they imagined and hoped it would be Broadway choreography. The dancers found out they're doing a girls routine and a guys routine for the first time during auditions. When Nigel announces it is indeed Broadway time, the Kasprzaks punch the sky. The girls are particularly thrilled to hear they're performing a West Side Story number. While the girls learn choreography, the boys goof off in the pool.

Bianca Revel is the tap dancer that Nigel called brilliant. Throughout Vegas auditions, she's sailed along through each style of dance. The boys are in the audience and the girls are on stage. A group of girls are cut, which includes Bianca. Nigel encourages all of them to practice and come back. Bianca said this is the last we'll see of her, and she's not coming back for another season.

The next Broadway group includes Megan, Priscilla, and Gabi, and they're let go. Caitlin is more upset than Megan. Gabi is grateful that the show pushed her to be so much stronger than she knew she was. The rest of the girls are continuing on, and they're the top 16. Only 6 cuts for their dreams to come true. They are asked to get their solos together. Caitlin is still upset that Megan is going home, but she is so grateful that Megan is still supporting her.

The 16 girls are relaxing poolside as the boys are working on Tyce's choreography. The rejuvenated girls are back in the audience to cheer on the boys. After the guys performed their Broadway choreography, the judges deliberated and then called up a group of six guys to the stage. Unfortunately, these guys are going home, but Nigel tells them to come back next year.

Sixteen girls and sixteen guys are left, and they have 10 minutes to put together their solos for a final chance to earn a spot in the Top 20. The dancers performed their solos and we see a quick montage of about one move from each of the 32 hopefuls. The dancers are waiting for the final decision, which might be the longest wait of their life.

First up is Janette Manrara, and we'll find out her fate, and the other 31 dancers' fates in the next show. Who are your picks for the Top 20?

Episode 5 - 06/04/09

It's the moment of truth. Which of these talented 32 dancers will make it to the live show as part of the Top 20? Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Lil C, and Mia Michaels will be breaking the news to the contestants. Everyone is freaking out, shaking, stressing, and reflecting.

Ballroom dancer Janette Manrara is up first. She mentions that these have been the roughest couple of weeks leading up to Vegas. Janette was in a car accident and broke up with her boyfriend. She said if they tell her no, it will kill her. Fortunately, Janette's the first person in the Top 20, and she thanks the judges for the good news and celebrates.

Diana Vaden meets with the judges and said she has moths instead of butterflies in her stomach. The judges see a lot of potential in Diana, and mentioned that she was very green at the start of auditions. Diana won't be continuing on in the competition, but Nigel implied that he wants her to try again next season. Diana seemed to be devastated by this news.

Vitolio Jeune has a vibrant personality. He grew up in Haiti and his mom died when he was just five years old. He lived with his grandmother for a bit, but she couldn't take care of him, so he was put in an orphanage. Vitolio left the orphanage at age 15 and danced on the street to make money. Lil C talks to Vitolio about coming to life and his personality, and a few tears roll down Vitolio's cheeks. Vitolio will have an opportunity to show America his personality some more during the next phase of the show, because Vitolio is in the Top 20.

Next, the judges made a series of cuts. On a positive note, the judges encouraged these dancers to audition for next season...which is right around the corner!

Kayla Radomski is the young lady with supportive grandparents. Mia mentioned that her strength and her performances have moved Mia, who was thrilled to announce that Kayla is in the Top 20.

It was Kupono Aweau's turn to step in front of the judges. If you don't think you saw him during Vegas auditions, it may be because he now has short hair. Kupono shared his to-do list with the camera, which included both trivial items and more important actions like making the Top 20. Kupono can toss away that list because he has accomplished everything, including making the Top 20.

The judges shared good news with the following dancers, who are in the Top 20- Paris Torres, Jeanine Mason, Ade Obayomi, Karla Garcia, and Jonathan Platero.

Brandon Bryant has received some mixed reviews throughout Vegas week. He was the first person to not get into the Top 20 last season. Mia and Lil C aren't impressed, but Debbie and Mary strongly disagree and think he's amazing. After much debate, Brandon is advancing to the Top 20.

Tony Bellissimo had a rocky ride during Vegas week. He was nervous to find out the judges' decision, but is sad that his brother, who is in Afghanistan, doesn't know he's here right now. The judges put Tony on the show so they can continue to watch him grow as a dancer, and they remind him not to let them down. He celebrates with some splits and shoulder shakes.

Also receiving good news was Maksim Kapitannikov, Caitlin Kinney, Melissa Sandvig, and Jason Glover.

This is Ashley Valerio's fourth year auditioning for the show. The judges have noticed improvement in her this year and appreciate that she's a fighter. After a near fake-out, Ashley makes the Top 20.

Randi Evans is very nervous as she greets the judges. Mia talks about her strength and her commitment to unitards, which has Randi cracking up. Randi can keep that smile on her face, because she is in the Top 20.

The tally is now at 17 dancers selected, so there are only three spots left. Alex Wong entered the stage. He is a ballet dancer who had a stunning solo. He loves the idea of being able to do something other than ballet with this show. The judges say they love Alex, but he's under contract with his ballet company, and the director of the program says he won't let him out of his contract. Nigel said if he gets let out of his contract, they'd love for him to come back.

Four other dancers get cut, including Ricky Sun, who is Asuka Kondoh's ballroom partner. Asuka hasn't found out her fate yet.

Phillip Chbeeb was the next to find out his fate. He talks about how transforming Vegas week has been. The judges share good news with Phillip, and he busts some signature moves on his way off the stage.

There's one spot left for the guys and one left for the girls, and only four dancers left, including the Kasprzak brothers.

For the girls it came down to Dina and Asuka, which they find humorous since they are different girls who dance different styles. The girls took the stage hand-in-hand. Asuka makes the top 20 and drops to her knees. Both girls hug and cry. Dina is devastated because this was her second try and she really wanted this.

The Kasprzak brothers took an emotional stroll down the hallway. As Ryan phrased it, will it be bow ties or straight ties? Both are Broadway dancers, so there's only room for one of them. The Kasprzaks are glad that they had this opportunity because they've grown closer together. Evan found out he's in the Top 20, and Nigel says it was probably due to Ryan's choreography. The judges encouraged Ryan to cheer on Evan, and to try-out next year.

Tune in next week to watch the Top 20 dance for your votes! Congratulations Ade, Ashley, Asuka, Brandon, Caitlin, Evan, Janette, Jason, Jeanine, Jonathan, Karla, Kayla, Kupono, Max, Melissa, Paris, Phillip, Randi, Tony, and Vitolio!

Episode 6 - 06/10/09

Top 20 Performances (510/511)

After a six city audition tour and a grueling semi-finals week in Vegas, the best 20 dancers have been selected. And for the first night this season, America can vote.

After the Top 20 introductions, Cat took the stage in style wearing a Temperley London dress and Christian Louboutin shoes. Sitting on tonight's panel of judges, or "jidges" as Cat says, were Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe. Adam talked about his busy schedule- in addition to all that he does with So You Think You Can Dance, he's directing 3 movies including Step Up 3, which includes So You Think You Can Dance alumni Katee, Josh, Ivan, and Twitch.

The 20 dancers were paired up with partners, but before the pairs are revealed to us, we see a montage of the Top 20 dancers' journeys to the big stage.

Kicking off the season are Jeanine and Phillip. Jeanine says that her road as a dancer hasn't always been smooth. She admits that she doesn't have the body of a typical dancer, but she has the passion. Reflecting on her 15 year journey makes her emotional. Phillip dances often in his every day life, even busting a move and checking out his reflection in windows. They will perform a hip hop routine by Tabitha and Napoleon. The story of the dance is about a couple never going to bed mad at each other. Jeanine admits that she's horrible at hip hop. Dancing to Ne-Yo's "Mad," Jeanine and Phillip took on this slow hip hop routine like they've been dancing together forever. Jeanine showed she could handle hip hop, and the routine let Phillip do what he does best. The dance ended with an onstage cuddle, to which Cat referred to as "schnooking." Adam thought "that was unfreakin' real" and that Jeanine held her own. He said Phillip has grown so much and that no one dances like him. Mary pulled off her first fake-out of the summer, saying "I hate to disagree with Adam...but I'm not going to!" This caused Phillip to run around the stage. Nigel agreed that the duo was fantastic, and was pleased that Jeanine, who has received little airtime thus far, has made a name for herself.

Next up was Asuka and Vitolio. Asuka is a California native who grew up with formal ballet training, but discovered Latin Ballroom in college. Vitolio had a tough childhood, but uses dance to triumph above hard times. Asuka and Vitolio are performing a Broadway routine with Tyce. The theme of the number is movie making, and it requires lots of hitting and locking. Dancing to "Hot Honey Rag" from Chicago, these two look great and use a balloon and a camera as props for their dance, which has an old silent movie feel to it. Adam thought that Asuka and Vitolio danced well and had clean lines. Mary thought they're fabulous dancers who played it a little too safe. Nigel thought the dancing was strong, and encouraged them to show more personality.

Karla and Jonathan were the third team to perform. Karla has performed in two Broadway shows including "Wicked." She's here to challenge herself with new choreographers and styles. Jonathan was watching the first season of So You Think You Can Dance and was inspired by what he saw, so he got involved with dance. This salsa dancer never thought it would bring him full circle as a contestant. Karla and Jonathan performed a Cha Cha number choreographed by Tony Meredith. It was a flirtatious routine set to "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga. Karla had great technique and Jonathan wasn't afraid to shake his hips. Adam thought Karla's technique and lines were beautiful, and appreciated that Jonathan is a masculine dancer. Mary gave her first signature scream of the night and exclaimed, "I love my Cha Cha rough!" Nigel said that these two had slipped under the radar, but after the chemistry and excitement they presented on stage, they won't be forgotten.

Randi and Evan, or "The Evans" (Randi's last name is Evans), got paired up for Season 5. It's Randi's third year auditioning, and the third time was a charm. Randi is close with her family and says she's a country girl trying to adjust to this new glam life. Evan grew up in a traditional mid-west family and is also trying to adjust to life in Los Angeles. Randi and Evan met with Tyce Diorio to perform a jazz routine, and Tyce helped them get into the characters emotionally. Evan said this piece is emotionally demanding, and it's hard to be intimate since they're new partners and since Randi is a married woman. Dancing passionately to "I Only Have Eyes For You" by Jamie Cullum, Evan and Randi connected emotionally with each other and with the music. Both of Evan's brothers are in the audience- Ryan Kasprzak made it to the very end of auditions, and their brother is wearing a shirt that says "I'm the other brother." Love it! The judges thought this was one of Tyce's best routines, and Adam called this couple "slightly vertically challenged," but said they danced like they were 8 feet tall. Statuesque Cat admitted that she wants to pick Randi and Evan up and put them in her pocket.

The next couple was a duo of less vertically challenged dancers- Paris and Tony. Paris spent her whole life working hard on dance, and nearly lost it all when she experienced trauma to her leg after a bad car accident. Tony grew up playing sports, and turned down the opportunity to play college lacrosse to pursue a dance career, and he hopes to prove to his dad that he made the right choice. Paris and Tony get to perform a hard hitting hip hop routine choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon, and the pressure is on Tony because this is his style of dance...only he's more comedic hip hop versus "stank face" hip hop. Dancing to a remix of "Let The Beat Rock" by the Black Eyed Peas, Tony and Paris hit the stage and hit their moves while wearing futuristic clothes and headphones. Adam thought the routine was really good, but suggested having more rebound when attacking hard hitting hip hop moves. Nigel thought the "stank was stank" but enjoys Paris and Tony as dancers.

With five couples down, and five to go, Caitlin and Jason took the stage for a Bollywood routine by Nakul Dev Mahajan. Season 4 saw So You Think You Can Dance's first Bollywood routine (by Josh and Katee), and it was one of the most memorable dances of the season. Caitlin started out as a gymnast, and then transitioned to acrobatic dance, and finally she became a dancer of all styles. Jason played sports before entering the dance world. Caitlin and Jason struggled with their finger choreography at practice. Dancing to "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire, the pair performed a physically demanding routine sealed with a kiss. Adam couldn't contain his energy and shouted, "You guys rocked!" He was also impressed with Jason's flawless and effortless handwork, calling him "a little force of nature in this competition." Mary gave a "woo hoo" and commended Caitlin on her strength in holding her handstand.

Janette and Brandon paired up for a Fox Trot number. Salsa dancer Janette learned how to dance at home with her Cuban family. Brandon is a contemporary dancer who is determined to prove himself to the judges. The team met with Louis van Amstel, who helped Janette and Brandon channel Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Their practice started off smooth, but then unraveled. The well-dressed team took the stage and perform to Michael BublÇ's version of "Come Fly With Me." After the performance, Cat asked Mary to give us an eyebrow, and Mary replied, "I can't anymore because of botox!" All three judges thought Janette was great at staying in character, and that Brandon showed strength and great framework.

Ashley and Kupono got to start their So You Think You Can Dance run with a Wade Robson jazz routine. After auditioning four times for Dance, Ashley finally made it to the show. She learned not to give up, and to fight for what she wants. Kupono was born and raised in Hawaii. He recently started teaching, but to make extra money he has a collection of random side jobs. Guest choreographer Wade Robson always comes up with unique routines, and this week was no different. The theme of this routine is two crash test dummies- Kupono is the messed up one and Ashley is the new one. Ashley put aside her "jazz hands for jazz blades" and danced with Kupono to "Felt Mountain" by Goldfrapp. The judges thought Ashley and Kupono were great in carrying out Wade and Amanda Robson's routine, and Mary put the robot dog prop on the Hot Tamale Train.

Melissa and Ade may have skirted under the radar during auditions, but they're here to make a name for themselves. During auditions, the judges called Melissa the "naughty ballerina." Ballet is the only type of dance Melissa is trained in, and she's the oldest, or "most seasoned," contestant at 29. Ade is a student at Chapman University who loves music. Melissa and Ade met with choreographer Mandy Moore to learn a contemporary routine about the moment when two people first fall in love. During practice, Melissa referred to the tangled up choreography as "Dirty Twister." She sure is a naughty ballerina! Mandy is convinced that Ade's hair pick is what gives him his super power. With wind in their clothes and hair, Melissa and Ade mastered the choreography and lifts, even without Ade's hair pick. Adam called them "special" and got choked up. Mary let out a big scream, and was also emotional. All of the judges recognized how talented Melissa is and how strong of a dancer Ade is.

Kayla and Max closed out the night. Kayla and her mom live with Kayla's grandparents in order to afford dance classes. Max came to the U.S. from Moscow at age 13. His younger brother died in a car accident five years ago. The two dancers met with Louis van Amstel to master a Samba. Louis has known Max since Max was just 14 years old. Kayla has never done ballroom before, so Max helped her out, but Louis can't believe she's new to ballroom judging by her mastery of the moves in practice. The pair took the stage to dance to "Jum Bah Day" by House of Gypsies, and there was a whole lot of sexy hip shaking going on. The way the hot pink fringe on Kayla's dress moved was captivating. When the routine ended, Adam grabbed his face and shouted, "That was so good!" He said Max is the luckiest man alive because "1) you got ballroom first, and 2) you got a person that makes me know there's a God, because only God could create a person this good." Adam said it was like Kayla was "born in a ballroom." Mary gave an "amen" and made them the first team (along with the toy dog) on the Hot Tamale Train! And for those of you who are new to So You Think You Can Dance, that's a great thing. Nigel thought the couple was "truly sensational," and that the routine "had everything we could wish for." Nigel told Kayla she's the dancer that can do everything, and Cat mentioned that Kayla's emotional grandpa must be crying so much right now.

Tomorrow, at the live results show, Sean Kingston will perform. Sadly, two contestants will be leaving the show.

What a great start to the season! Who impressed you? Who is a dark horse?

Top 20 Results

Cat introduced the show from the balcony and looked lovely in a French Connection dress, Roberto Cavalli shoes, and Melinda Maria earrings.

The show kicked off with lots of energy from the Top 20, who performed a Shane Sparks hip hop routine to "Boom Boom Pow" by the Black Eyed Peas. The theme of the dance was somewhat of a post-apocalyptic/futuristic vagabond theme. Eerily whispering "Save the Dancers, Save the World," the Top 20 performed a really awesome routine. Do we really have to send one of these dancers home?!

The way results shows work are as follows: the three couples with the lowest votes will perform solos, and the judges will eliminate the guy and girl of their choice.

We see a montage of the Top 20's first week, including the partner reveal when the boys snuck up on the girls. The video introduced us to the five tips of working with partners, all accompanied by humorous clips.

The first three couples are called out to the stage and include Kayla and Max, Randi and Evan, and Jeanine and Phillip. Kayla and Max get to ride the Hot Tamale Train all the way to next week because they're safe. Randi and Evan are safe too, so that means...wait! Cat announces Jeanine and Phillip are also safe, and the fake-out was well worth it just to see how excited Jeanine and Phillip were. Jeanine sprinted across the stage and leaped into Phillip's arms. Three couples are safe, which means only four of the seven couples waiting patiently backstage are safe.

Next, Cat read the results for Caitlin and Jason. The judges loved their Bollywood routine, and so did America- they're safe! Melissa and Ade moved the judges, but did they move the viewers? They did, and they'll be returning next week. Ashley and Kupono performed a unique jazz routine that received rave reviews, and Paris and Tony performed a hard hitting hip hop routine and tried their hardest to put their best "stank faces" forward. Cat revealed that Ashley and Kupono are safe, so Paris and Tony will be performing solos.

The final three teams made their way onto the stage, but only one of these teams would be safe. First to find out their fate were Asuka and Vitolio. Their Broadway routine landed them in the bottom three this week, so they'll be dancing solos. The final spot in the bottom was either for Brandon and Janette or Karla and Jonathan. America voted, and Brandon and Janette are safe, so Karla and Jonathan will be dancing for their lives.

As the dancers went back stage to prepare for their solos, we were treated to a tango by Miriam Larici & Leonardo Barrionuevo to "Tanguera" by Forever Tango. This couple warmed up the dance floor with their hot moves.

The first solo was from Paris, and she danced to "It Doesn't Hurt" by Katie Thompson. Paris showed off her graceful lines as she performed. Next, Tony took the stage for his solo which was set to "Early in the Morning" by The Gap Band. Tony brought his funky hip hop moves to the stage, and he wore an eclectic outfit. Asuka shook it to "Did Ya" by BoA, and showed that ballroom dancers can perform solos too. Vitolio danced to "We Belong Together" by Gavin DeGraw. We haven't seen much of Vitolio's solos thus far, and tonight he spun and emoted, and it was nice to see this side of him. Cat said Vitolio gave her chills. Next, Karla performed a solo to Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman." She twirled and showed strength and personality. Jonathan danced to "Krazy" by Pitbull ft. Lil Jon, and his solo was full of flips and twists. He told Cat he couldn't hold back, since he's dancing for his life.

The judges went back stage to deliberate, and Sean Kingston took the stage to perform "Fire Burning." He performed with back-up dancers, smoke, and some light pyrotechnics!

It was time for the first elimination of the season. Nigel said the judges were unanimous with their decision on which girl to send home. He had Karla step forward, and Nigel advised her to make sure her solos are more than just a series of steps, but she proved herself so she's safe. The dancer going home was either Paris or Asuka. The judges said they tried to take everything into account. Since there are several contemporary dancers in the Top 20, and since Paris didn't bring it all to the stage, she is going home. We saw a video of Paris' So You Think You Can Dance journey, and it was set to Kelly Clarkson's "Already Gone." The judges were also unanimous on which guy to send home. Nigel said that the judges didn't think any of the guys truly performed their best. The judges wanted Vitolio to show the personality that they know he has. Hopefully he'll find it, because he's staying in the competition. It was down to Jonathan and Tony. Both dancers performed in their genres this week, but the judges didn't think either of them lived up to their potential during their solos. Ultimately, the judges are keeping Jonathan, so Tony and his partner, Paris, are out of the competition, and the coupling will remain the same next week. We see a montage of Tony's journey, set to "On Your Own" by Green River Ordinance.

What did you think of tonight's show? Do you think the right people went home?

Episode 8 - 06/18/09

Last week was the first show where America got to vote, and Tony and Paris were sent packing. This week, the remaining 9 couples stayed together and took on a new style of dance that they pulled out of a hat after last week's results show. The "jidges" for the Top 18 included Lil C (one of the originators of crump), and as usual, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe. This week, it was time to find out something we didn't know about the dancers, as told to America by their partner.

Dancing first were Randi and Evan. Evan revealed that Randi has a dog that she treats like a child. Randi said that Evan is a total gear-head, and he even built his own car. They met with Louis van Amstel to perform a jive routine. "FUN" will be a big theme of the routine, judging by the "fun counter" on the screen that tallied the 15+ times someone said the magic word. Jiving to Ray Charles' "Shake A Tail Feather," Randi and Evan showed great energy, and at one point in the dance, Evan jumped over his partner. Lil C said they were "out the box with a bang." He mentioned that Evan's almost too smooth with his jive, and Randi's a firecracker. Overall, Lil C thought Randi and Evan had a great partnership during their jive. Mary thought these two "little powerhouses" were built for the jive. Nigel appreciated Louis' great choreography and said that Evan wasn't as good as the judges know he is.

Melissa and Ade pulled jazz out of the hat. Ade revealed that Melissa has been married for four years, and that Melissa and her sister married a set of brothers. Melissa attempted to pronounce Ade's full name: Adetokunbo Isaac Kayode Obayomi. It's a nice name, but it's no wonder he goes by Ade. Melissa and Ade worked with Sonya Tayeh on their jazz routine. Sonya borrowed Ade's lucky pick, and then mentioned the storyline of the dance- a high maintenance girl is playing hard to get, and a man that hates to lose is after her. Dancing to "24 Hours (The Ashton Shuffle A-Bomb Remix)" by Terry Poison, Ade and Melissa performed a strong, hard-hitting jazz routine. Ade's black and pink gloves and Melissa's hot pink ensemble helped give the routine that extra punch of jazz. Judge Lil C gave them his first "buck" comment, which is a compliment. This caused Cat to engage Melissa and Ade in a 3-way chest bump. Lil C said he was willing to go on record and say that Ade is everybody's competition. He also liked how Melissa got into the character. Mary said it's "time for tough love...[pause]...tough to find anything wrong with that!" It only took two dances before Mary's first fake out of the night. She thought Ade was phenomenal with his lifts, technique, and movement, so she gave Ade, her "gentle giant," a "woo." Nigel said Melissa did everything Ade did, and equaled his strength. He never would've guessed Melissa was a ballerina, albeit a naughty one.

Hot off their Bollywood routine, Caitlin and Jason were back for another week of dance. Caitlin said that Jason had an obsession with Michael Jackson as a kid. We are treated to home videos of little Jason dressed like Michael and mastering Michael's moves. Jason mentioned that Caitlin uses baby voices and makes dinosaur noises. The two worked with Shane Sparks on a hip hop routine this week. Getting down to "Missin You" by Trey Songz, you could tell that Jason was influenced by Michael Jackson by the way he moved across the dance floor. Lil C and Nigel were a bit perplexed because they thought the dance didn't work for them until the end. Mary observed that the dance styles were like having Michael Jackson and Britney Spears dance together- they're different dancers, so the moves were not in sync. Nigel thought Shane Sparks did a good job of adapting the style of hip hop to the type of dancers Jason and Caitlin are.

Brandon and Janette got the first disco dance of the season. Brandon told America that Janette had the worst teeth when she was young. Janette let us know something mind blowing- Brandon has never been to the gym, despite having a perfect body. Choreographer Doriana Sanchez met with Brandon and Janette to teach them fastest dance ever on SYTYCD. Brandon picked it up instantly, but Janette got upset when she couldn't master it. Dancing to "Loving is Really My Game" by Brainstorm, Brandon and Janette were able to keep up with the speed of the routine, and they made it look easy. Lil C said he just witnessed the birth of progression in two amazing dancers. He thought the dance was extremely amazing and even admitted that Brandon did a phenomenal job. Lil C called Janette the epitome of recovery because of the way she stumbled and kept going during the routine. Mary thought they nailed it, and noted that Janette's flexibility is unbelievable and Brandon's strength is out of this world. She even said Brandon and Janette "embodied everything that disco ever was." Followed, naturally, by a "Woo hoo," tons of screaming, and a stranding ovation! Nigel said, "If I could stand up and scream like Mary, I would."

Last week, Asuka and Vitolio found themselves in the bottom three, and they hope to change that this week. Asuka announced that Vitolio is obsessed with motorcycles. Vitolio offered up Asuka's talent of making spit bubbles. The two met up with Louis van Amstel to perform a waltz. Louis, who was inspired by Vitolio's emotional back story, encouraged Vitolio to dance full of pain during the waltz, instead of repressing it.
Waltzing to "Dreams Are More Precious" by Enya, the two took the stage and performed a graceful and powerful waltz. Vitolio was able to swirl Asuka around as she floated just inches above the stage. Mary was so moved by the routine. She choked up thinking about how disappointed she was in this couple last week. Mary called the routine "painfully beautiful," and said this was the most honest Vitolio's danced since she laid eyes on him. As a ballroom pro, she appreciated how Vitolio showed strength and rise and fall during the waltz. Mary thought Asuka displayed endearing and believable passion. Lil C thought Vitolio's choppy steps were compensated by the sincerity and authenticity of his emotion. He liked Asuka's dominant submission during the performance. Nigel said, "Anyone not touched by that routine is heartless. You both brought the quality to that routine that we rarely see on this program."

Brian Friedman is back! He was a choreographer during the first two seasons of Dance, and now he is joining Season 5 to choreograph a pop jazz routine for Kayla and Max. Kayla must be stoked because she lists Brian as her favorite dancer on her contestant profile page. She mentioned that Max is a house dad because he cooks dinner for his roommates. Max said that Kayla is a super texter on her cell phone, but Kayla admits she's usually talking to her mom. Kayla and Max took the stage to perform a strenuous pop jazz routine to Nadia Oh's "Hot Like Wow." The couple was dressed in colorful costumes and they performed the routine with a great quirkiness about them. Lil C thought Max was great and Kayla was amazing. Mary thought Max did surprisingly well and told Kayla she has had "not one wrong step since the day we first saw you. You're still on the Hot Tamale Train!" Nigel called Kayla a frontrunner, and said Max's character kept up with Kayla tonight. He then stated, "The pair of you bring a lot to this program."

After receiving rave reviews last week, Karla and Jonathan still found themselves in the bottom 3. They're back this week to win over America. Jonathan informed the audience that Karla is a talented hip hop dancer and a member of the Boogie Bots. Karla said that Jonathan loves to sing, but is not that good at it. Jonathan and Karla hooked up with Stacey Tookey, a choreographer for SYTYCD Canada. Contemporary is Karla's genre and not Jonathan's, so he was a bit nervous. Stacey mentioned that the dance is about strangers who are in love, and at rehearsal they weren't nailing the lifts. Would it all come together in time for the show? Dancing to a version of "Falling Slowly" by The Frames, Karla and Jonathan nailed the lifts and put on a very powerful routine. Cat greeted them after their performance and announced, "First Deeley chills of the season!" Mary said something she's never said before: "Jonathan, you did that style better than your own." She believes these underdogs are now in the spotlight. Mary commented on Karla's lines and Jonathan's assisted lifts and feet. Nigel said Jonathan had no false moves, and that they proved you can bounce back after almost being cut. Lil C thought the duo danced beautifully, and that everything was in perfect balance. He then gave Karla and Jonathan the second "buck" of the night.

Phillip and Jeanine performed a hip hop routine last week, and this week they will be dancing out of their comfort zone with a tango routine. Jeanine called Phillip a super nerd, as he's an Engineering Physics major at Loyola Marymount University and he loves science projects and collects reptiles. In fact, at one point he had about 40 reptiles in his room. Phillip revealed that Jeanine has a stuffed animal named Spanky the Bear. Jeanine called Spanky "Her perfect boyfriend." The couple met with Tony Meredith to learn about the tango. Phillip hasn't danced tango before, and Tony noticed the lack of experience while teaching Phillip and Jeanine choreography. Tangoing to "Violento (Up Mix)" by Bailango!, the duo danced with much passion. Mary gave Phillip an "A+ in attitude." She called Jeanine a "hot mama" and appreciated her technique. Lil C thought Phillip was weighed down a bit by his lack of ballroom confidence. Nigel thought although they lacked some technique, Phillip and Jeanine's tango was great entertainment.

Closing out the night was Ashley and Kupono. Ashley said Kupono may have OCD, which Kupono further justifies by showing his insanely organized closet. Kupono told a story about how Ashley vomited on her classmates on the first day of first grade. Ashley and Kupono got to perform the second Shane Sparks hip hop routine of the night. Shane explained that the story of the dance is that Ashley is Kupono's shadow. He said that the couple will need to work at 100mph with skill and be in unison in order to master the choreography. Sounds tough! Kupono added "Find Your Inner Shane Sparks" to his to-do list. Adding "Make Top 20" to the list worked for him in Vegas, so would Kupono find his inner Sparks? Ashley and Kupono took the stage to dance to "Imma Be" by The Black Eyed Peas. Towards the end of the dance, they took off their jackets and kicked it up a notch. Mary thought the dance was okay. Lil C liked Ashley's intensity and thought she had some strong moments. Nigel said he started to like the dance towards the end. Although the performance left him under whelmed, he said he still loved them as dancers.

Who will be in the bottom 3? Who is going home? Kristinia DeBarge performs "Goodbye" on tomorrow's live results show as we say goodbye to two dancers.

Episode 9 - 06/18/09

Cat Deeley introduced the Top 18 from the balcony while looking stunning in a YSL suit. The dancers performed a group dance to "Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder. They wore business suits and had tribal warrior tattoos on their face. If it wasn't obvious, Mia Michaels choreographed the routine.

Then, Cat mentioned that Lil C was in rare form last night. We were treated to "Lil C's Dictionary of Dance" which was a montage of the many large words and shiny metaphors Lil C used to describe dance last night.

Wasting no time, Cat brought out the first three couples to reveal the results. These dancers included Ade and Melissa, Jason and Caitlin, and Phillip and Jeanine, who all came out to a very warm welcome from the audience. Melissa and Ade's jazz routine, choreographed by Sonya, was a hit with the judges. America must have loved it as much as the judges, because they're safe. Jason and Caitlin's hip hop routine didn't wow the judges as much as their Bollywood routine from last week. Phillip and Jeanine's tango received mixed reviews. Ultimately, Caitlin and Jason were in the bottom 3.

The next three couples to find out their fate were Brandon and Janette, Karla and Jonathan, and Ashley and Kupono. Brandon and Janette performed a disco number that had Mary shouting. Mary's shout was seconded by America, who dialed in enough votes for the pair. Karla and Jonathan performed a contemporary routine that Lil C thought was "buck." Ashley and Kupono performed a hip hop routine that the judges received with mixed reviews. The votes came in and Karla and Jonathan were safe, which meant that Ashley and Kupono had to dance for their place in the competition.

Next, Evan and Randi awaited their results, but first Cat had a surprise for Evan. Evan's brother Ryan nearly made Top 20 this year, but lost the last available spot to Evan. Ryan tried out for Season 6 on Friday in Los Angeles, and Ryan made it straight to Vegas. The clip even made Cat cry! Be sure to tune into Season 6 this fall to see if Ryan makes it on the show. There's additional good news for Evan- he and Randi are safe. Vitolio and Asuka performed an emotional and powerful waltz. Kayla and Max performed a funky pop jazz routine. After the votes came in, Vitolio and Asuka are safe, and Kayla and Max must perform solos.

Tonight's specialty dance act came from Amrapali Ambegaokar, who danced to "Ganesh Toda Tatkar" by Gangani & Smt. Anjani Ambegaokar.

It was solo time, and all 6 dancers were new to being in the bottom. Caitlin kicked off the solo portion of the show with a contemporary ballet routine to "Make You Feel My Love" by Adele. Next, Jason performed an athletic contemporary routine to "Superman" by Robin Thicke. Following Jason, Ashley performed a contemporary routine to "By Your Side" by Coco Rosie. Kupono took the stage and performed a contemporary routine to "Many Moons" by Janelle Mon†e. Kayla leaped to "Walking on Air" by Kerli, and Max closed out the solos with a light-footed dance to "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins.

The judges gathered their notes and went backstage to deliberate. Meanwhile, guest performer Kristinia DeBarge performed her single, "Goodbye," while accompanied by backup dancers.

It was time for the results. Nigel said that the judges were not unanimous on either decision, which shows the quality of work being lost. He continued by saying if it were up to them, they wouldn't lose any of these six talented dancers. The judges appreciated Caitlin's great quality of movement in her solo, which helped them forget her hip hop routine. Nigel commented on Ashley's old Hollywood glamour look, but said that her solo did not include enough substance. The judges know Kayla's a great dancer, but they thought her solo was too crowded. They would like for her to concentrate on her beautiful moves. In the end, it was Ashley who was sent home.

As for the guys, Jason's solo was exceptionally strong, and Nigel called it "the best solo on the series to date." That's a huge compliment, and it took a second for it to sink into Jason's mind. In addition to strength, Jason showed great control, so Nigel asked him to sit down and come back next week. The judges felt that Kupono's solo had very little substance, but they like that's a different and intelligent dancer. Max impressed the judges with his hard work, and they realized he's restricted by his ballroom style during his solo. Ultimately, the person leaving tonight with Ashley is Max.

Next week, Kayla and Kupono become a couple, and 16 dancers compete for the title of America's Favorite Dancer. What did you think of tonight's show? Were the results shocking to you?

Episode 10 - 06/24/09

Last week Ashley and Max were sent home, which meant that there would be a new couple amongst the eight couples performing tonight. Cat Deeley introduced the Top 16 contestants in an Alice and Olivia dress, Sergio Rossi shoes, Melinda Maria bracelets, and Vintage Indian earrings.

Joining Nigel and Mary at the judges' table tonight is Toni Basil! You know, of "Mickey" fame. Toni is about to receive the "Living Legend of Hip Hop" award.

Kicking off the Top 16 performances were Karla and Jonathan. We also learned about the dancers' other talents/career interests if they hadn't pursued dance. Karla would be a journalist. She minored in Journalism at NYU and she really enjoys writing. Jonathan would be an acrobat for Cirque du Soleil, and has a background in gymnastics.
Hip hop choreographer Dave Scott is back at SYTYCD and choreographed a smooth hip hop routine for Karla and Jonathan. Performing to "By My Side" by Jadakiss feat. Ne-Yo, Karla had some smooth moves and Jonathan landed an impressive backflip. Nigel said that although they are a couple of good dancers, the chemistry wasn't there. Mary noticed that parts of the dance where lacking synchronicity, and she preferred the amazing chemistry Karla and Jonathan had during last week's contemporary routine. Toni stated that street dance needs to have a groove and a funk, and she didn't see it in this performance.

Vitolio and Asuka got to work with choreographer Mandy Moore on a jazz routine this week. But first, we learned that Asuka would be a jewelry maker if dance didn't work out for her. Vitolio would love to be a lead singer in a band. After last week's successful waltz, the duo is back and ready to tackle a jazz routine. Mandy described the dance as "Thrash Rocker Jazz." Latin ballroom dancer Asuka feels out of her element at rehearsal, and Vitolio comforts her and melts the hearts of viewers everywhere. Dressed to kill in black, turquoise, leather and lace, Asuka and Vitolio dance to "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benatar. Nigel called them "fantastic," and appreciated how this was a simple routine that brought the best out in the pair. Mary thought it was good, but not as great as their waltz from last week. Toni saw potential in Vitolio and Asuka to become an extremely talented couple, and said they are a force to be reckoned with.

Hot off Sonya's jazz routine from last week, Ade and Melissa were ready to Rumba. Melissa is a Pilates instructor and would get more involved with Pilates if she had more time. Ade would be a sound engineer for a show like Dance, and he even got the opportunity to hold a boom mic, albeit inches in front of Melissa's face. Choreographer Tony Meredith calls this routine an international style rumba. Dancing to "Emotion" by Destiny's Child, this ballerina and contemporary dancer pulled it off. When the dance was over, Cat said, "Please put your hands together for this girl in the frock," regarding Melissa's barely there sequin outfit. Nigel said Melissa has a great back and great hips and that Ade was absolutely incredible. He then made a pun: "What a different ADE makes." Mary shouted, "What you're selling right now, I'm buying!" She valued Melissa's spins and Ade's technique and rhythmic movement. Toni was impressed with the choreography and the execution.

Janette and Brandon performed a ridiculously fast disco routine last week, and this week they pulled hip hop with Dave Scott out of the hat. Brandon is interested in sets and would like to work in lighting and design. Janette is one year away from getting her finance degree and has worked as a bank loan processor which she says is more fun than it sounds. Dave describes this hip hop number as rock 'n roll meets hip hop. Dancing to "What A World" by Common, Brandon played the role of a hip hop dancer who was trying to woo an arrogant rocker chick. They used a chair as a prop and really got into character. Nigel thought Dave did a good job catering the choreography to a contemporary and salsa dancer. Mary screamed and said, "I think you guys really hit that." She thought Brandon and Janette were rockstars. Toni thought the juxtaposition that Dave presented was strategic and worked well.

New couple Kayla and Kupono paired up after their partners were eliminated last week. Kayla has done some dance modeling and would be interested in getting into high fashion and runway modeling. Kupono loves clothes and would want to design costumes. The couple met with Jean Marc Genereux to tackle a Viennese Waltz. During rehearsal, Kupono struggled with the lifts and admitted that he doesn't have upper body strength. The new team takes the stage and Viennese waltzes to "Sweet Dreams For You" by Jewel. The lighting was done in a way that the floor looks like a grate and the walls are a cityscape. Nigel called the dance very beautiful and elegant, but said that it wouldn't make anyone want to stand up and cheer. The in-house studio audience wasn't going to take that sitting down! They stood up and applauded for Kayla and Kupono. Mary thought the dance had a beautiful flow to it and put them on the Hot Tamale Train! Toni liked the dance and was amazed that Kayla doesn't let her technique hamper her performance. She also thought that Kupono partnered her well.

Evan and Randi were the next couple to take the stage. Randi is working on becoming an elementary school teacher and wants to teach special education. Gearhead Evan would own a custom car shop if he didn't go down the dance route. The pair met with Mia Michaels to perform a contemporary routine to "Koop Island Blues" by Koop feat. Ane Brun. Mia explained that this number is "all about the booty," and that Evan would be hypnotized by Randi's tush in this routine. Mia described Randi as needing to channel a "Poodle- sexy, sassy, sophisticated." Randi and Evan took the stage to perform this cat and mouse love story, and after their performance, Cat called them "cheeky." Nigel thought it was simple choreography that was danced beautifully. Mary thought it was one of the best routines of the night. She was finally able to see Evan as a leading man, and she was glad that Randi was a good sport with her behind being the center of attention. Toni thought they lived up to the choreography and were phenomenal.

Caitlin and Jason drew Paso Doble this week. Caitlin is interested in broadcast journalism, and Jason would love to be a professional or university level soccer player.  This couple struggled a bit with their hip hop routine last week. This week they met with Jean Marc Genereux to learn a Paso Doble routine. Jean Marc said this isn't a lovey dovey routine. In this routine they have to hate each other and be mad. Caitlin and Jason took the stage in ornate costumes and danced to the powerful and dramatic "O'Fortuna (from Carmina Burana)" by Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg & Kurt Prestel. Nigel advised that Jason needs to perform to Caitlin instead of the audience. He thought Caitlin was good and that her lines are perfect in addition to having a beautiful flow of movement. Mary thought it was a really strong performance. Toni said that they both did a great job at a style of dance that's unfamiliar to them.

Jeanine and Phillip closed out the performance show. Phillip loves to research things and would like to be an inventor. Jeanine would love to be an actress. She grew up doing musical theater and appeared in some independent films and commercials. They met with Tyce Diorio to learn Broadway choreography. There is a couch prop in the routine, and Phillip needs to jump over all six and a half feet of it. Dancing to "Moses" from Singin' In The Rain (original soundtrack), Phillip and Jeanine look like an adorable 1950s married couple. During the routine, Phillip's pants ripped in an inconvenient location. Nigel thought Jeanine brought personality to the number, but thought Phillip needed to show more of his personality. Mary was impressed that Phillip nailed the jump, and she said Jeanine could step out on any Broadway stage. She even told Jeanine, "You've been stellar this whole competition and tonight was no exception. You look phenomenal." Toni thought the dance was adorable and that the couple performed well.

Who will be the next guy and girl to leave the show? Who do you think is definitely safe?

Episode 11 - 06/25/09

The night started off with a group routine to "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" by Pitbull. The dance was a fusion of Hip Hop and Samba choreographed by Napoleon and Tabitha. It was a sexy and sensual routine with tables and water splashing around. At the end of the routine, Cat emerged from a table on the dance floor. Too much fun!

Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Toni Basil were back at the judges' table. Before the show continued, Nigel discussed the passing of three great stars: Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson.

The first five couples were brought out to face the votes. Five teams at once is a lot! Asuka and Vitolio were first to find out their fate. They performed a jazz routine last night that showed off their potential to be a powerful couple. Cat revealed that they're in the bottom three and will be dancing solos later in the show. Janette and Brandon performed a rocking hip hop number that received rave reviews from the judges. America was won over, Brandon and Janette are safe. Randi and Evan performed a booty focused contemporary routine. Cat said, "The butt made the cut," meaning Randi and Evan are safe. Jeanine and Phillip performed a Broadway routine. The viewers were sold and voted enough times to make them safe. Ade and Melissa performed a rumba that blew the judges away. America was blown away too- Ade and Melissa are safe.

The remaining three couples were brought out to the stage. Unfortunately, two of these couples were in the bottom. First up were Karla and Jonathan, who performed a hip hop routine that Nigel predicted would land them in the bottom three. Indeed, Karla and Jonathan will be dancing solos tonight. Caitlin and Jason performed a dramatic Paso Doble that the judges enjoyed. New couple Kayla and Kupono performed a Viennese Waltz that had Mary handing them a ticket for the Hot Tamale Train. Kayla and Kupono are safe, so Caitlin and Jason will be "dancing for their lives" tonight.

Tonight's specialty act melted Cat's heart. The Rage Boyz Crew (pictured above) took the stage to perform a hip hop routine to "Feel It" by Colby O'Donis & Mauli-b.

Asuka was the first dancer to perform a solo. She took the stage and performed a Latin Ballroom number to "Don't Trust Me" by 3OH!3. Vitolio performed a solo to "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay and got some major height on his jumps. Next, Karla took the stage and danced a contemporary solo to "15 Step" by Radiohead. Jonathan took the stage and tumbled and salsa danced to "The Hunted" by Kodo. Caitlin performed a contemporary solo to "Que Sera Sera" by Jennifer Terran. Jason danced to "New American Classic" by Taking Back Sunday and showed off a few of his signature contemporary moves.

As the judges deliberated backstage, The Veronicas took the stage to sing "Take Me On The Floor."

It was time for the decisions. The judges were unanimous on their decision for which female will be leaving the show. Nigel called Caitlin forward and said she's been growing in confidence and had a remarkable solo so she's safe. Karla was called forward next. The judges thought her solo was a little desperate and thought she fell out of her turns. Asuka was called forward and Nigel said she's an exciting performer and beautiful, but they don't feel she's been growing in the competition, so the judges send her home.

The judges were not unanimous on their decision for which guy should leave tonight. Vitolio was called forward and Nigel said he needs to deliver when he dances. Nigel called Jonathan forward and complimented his contemporary moves and tumbling, but said he hasn't shown enough growth. Jason was told that his solo was just a series of moves, but he has proven himself, so the judges are keeping him. Ultimately, it's Jonathan who is going home.

Next week we're down to the Top 14. Vitolio and Karla will become a new couple. Did you agree with the results?

Episode 12 - 07/01/09

Three weeks of performances down, 27 routines danced, and 7 couples remain. It's Top 14 night on So You Think You Can Dance!

Tonight's judges are Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and guest judge and Emmy Award winning choreographer, Mia Michaels! Mia has admitted that her opinion has changed for the better about a particular dancer who she gave a rough time to in Vegas (Brandon).

Janette and Brandon kicked off the night with a Cha Cha choreographed by Jean Marc Genereux and his wife, France. This week, we checked in with the dancers to find out the highs and lows they've experienced since being on the show. Janette said this whole process has been really fun. Brandon remembered the beautiful and difficult foxtrot from the first week of the show. Jean Marc and France admitted to choreographing a hot and sexy Cha Cha for Brandon and Janette. These two Miami natives were ready for something spicy, but then the choreographers revealed that the dance is also fast and dangerous. Dancing to "Hush Hush; Hush Hush" by The Pussycat Dolls, Brandon and Janette twist and turn all over the stage. Nigel called it "The best damn Cha Cha I have ever seen on this show. Ever! Ever!" He went on to say that a dance of this caliber could have been performed on a world championship stage. Nigel even called Brandon "the Michaelangelo of the dance floor." Then, Mary gave Brandon and Janette two first class tickets to board the Hot Tamale Train. Mia stated that the dancers she's toughest on are the ones she notices talent in, before finally admitting to Brandon, "You are amazing." She also said Janette has been on fire since day one.

Following that fiery dance were Kayla and Kupono, who met with Sonya Tayeh to learn a contemporary routine. Kupono's journey has been "crazy." He loved working with Wade, but was sad to lose Ashley. Kayla feels blessed to be riding the Hot Tamale Train all season, but misses Max. Kupono was so excited to work with quirky contemporary choreographer Sonya, that he made an "I heart Sonya" shirt. Sonya said this is a dark dance in which Kayla is pulling away from death and Kupono is dragging her into it. Dancing to "Eyes on Fire" by Blue Foundation, Kayla and Kupono did a great job carrying out Sonya's vision. Nigel stated that Kupono was a new man up there this week. He was glad to see this pair reach their true potential. Mary thought Sonya did a brilliant job at playing to the dancers' strengths, and kept Kupono and Kayla on the Hot Tamale Train! Mia loved the aesthetics of the routine. She was pleased that Kayla commits to everything and has ridiculous lines. Mia admired that Kupono has applied every note given to him and it shows in his growth. She also called him majestic and calming. Two dances down, and we're off to a great start!

Randi and Evan got to perform a dance in Evan's style this week- Broadway! But first, Randi talked about the roller coaster that is So You Think You Can Dance, and Evan discussed how he loves working with the different choreographers. Evan can add Joey Dowling to that list for this week's Broadway choreography. Joey mentioned that the dance is a fight themed number, much different from Mia's "booty" choreography last week. Taking the stage to "Rich Man's Frug" from Sweet Charity [2005 Broadway Revival Cast], Randi and Evan put on quite a show. Nigel thought Randi performed well, but he was a little disappointed in Broadway dancer Evan. However, he still said they're in his top 10. Mary thought the duo got into the characters well. Mia said they needed to take the dance to the next level and not let their height show, but overall she thought they did a good job.

Caitlin and Jason drew pop jazz with Brian Friedman this week. Jason said that this show has been a learning experience. Caitlin mentioned that being in the bottom three these past two weeks has been hard. The couple met with choreographer Brian Friedman to take on a unique jazz dance about aliens. In the number, Caitlin will be looking for the last human, Jason, to mate with. Brian says that she needs to be the dominant one in this dance. Dancing to "Creator" by Santigold, Caitlin took the stage in an alien suit and danced strongly with Jason. Nigel thought both dancers committed to the characters and choreography. Mary agreed that they dug into the characters, but the routine was a little too out there for her. Mia thought it was a refreshing and fun piece that was danced well.

Jeanine and Phillip got another opportunity to perform hip hop with Tabitha and Napoleon.
First, Jeanine said that being on the show is unreal and she never thought it would happen to her. Phillip said he's been extremely enlightened while dancing on the show. Tabitha and Napoleon explained that the dance is about being locked into a partnership, both figuratively and literally. Phillip and Jeanine will be shackled to each other at the ankles throughout the entire dance, and they have to beware of slipping on the chain. Hip hopping to "Love Lockdown" by Kanye West, Jeanine and Phillip mastered the choreography and didn't get caught up in the chain. Nigel exclaimed, "If you guys keep dancing like that, you should be chained together for life!" He's impressed by Jeanine, who makes every style look like her own, although she hasn't even received her own style yet. Nigel also mentioned that Phillip hit the moves nice and hard. Mary loved how creative the dance was, and mentioned that a prop could be a double edge sword. She also said that Jeanine took her breath away. Mia said she was distracted by the "chainography," but she thought the couple did a great job.

This week, Melissa and Ade got to perform the first classical pas de deux on the So You Think You Can Dance stage. Melissa's favorite moment this season has been the first day they filmed the show. Ade said this experience has been even more than he thought it would be. The couple met with choreographer Thordal, who revealed it's a Romeo and Juliet themed dance. Melissa said it's her dream to perform "Romeo and Juliet" so she was very excited. A classical pas de deux is done on pointe, so this will be the first time pointe shoes have been used on the show. Tip toeing onto the stage to "Romeo and Juliet: Prokofiev's Suite No.1 Op. 64b, 6th Movement" by Orchestre De La Suisse Romande & Armin Jordan, Melissa and Ade made the choreography look effortless. Nigel was so excited to have this style of dance on the show, and he thought Melissa and Ade danced it beautifully. Mary thought Melissa's pointe work was phenomenal and thought that Ade swept her up like a dream. Mia said the dance was like a fairytale and it was done so beautifully. She called Melissa brilliant, and a true ballerina.

Before the last dance of the night, we were treated to a montage of some of the show's choreographers who explained that dancing is their life. Nigel is joining forces with director Adam Shankman, "Dancing with the Stars" judge Carrie Ann Inaba, and actress Katie Holmes to create The Dizzy Feet Foundation. The foundation will provide scholarships and assistance to talented underprivileged dancers, to help them make their dance dreams come true. You can learn more here.

The 100th episode of So You Think You Can Dance will air on July 23rd. Tyce Diorio has choreographed a tribute to Judy Garland in which Katie Holmes is dancing, and she's donating her entire performance fee to The Dizzy Feet Foundation website.

Closing out the night was a Quickstep from new couple Karla and Vitolio. Both Karla and Vitolio talk about how being on the show is bittersweet after losing their partners last week. They met with Jean Marc and France Genereux to learn the Quickstep choreography. The Quickstep is a style of dance that is often dreaded on this show, but would Karla and Vitolio succeed with it? Quickstepping to "Puttin' on the Ritz" by Rufus Wainwright, the dance started off with Vitolio as a statue in an art museum, and halfway through the dance, Karla underwent an almost magical wardrobe change. Nigel loved the choreography and thought the couple kept their shape and had good footwork. Mary loved how they brought the choreography to life, and thought Vitolio did a great job keeping his frame. Mia called Jean Marc a genius and said, "That was amazing and brilliant." She thought Karla and Vitolio stepped it up and performed well. Vitolio ended by saying he hopes the "kiss of death becomes a kiss of joy."

After seven amazing dances, three couples will still fight for their spots in the competition on Thursday. The musical guest is American Idol's first winner, Kelly Clarkson! There will be a special performance from Desmond Richardson and Patricia Hachey. You won't want to miss this episode!

The Top 14 put on some amazing performances, but unfortunately, two must go home. Cat introduced the show from the balcony in a Zara dress, vintage Chloe belt, Christian Laboutin shoes, and bracelets by Mulberry and Lanvi. The opening group dance was performed to "Brand New Day" from The Wiz (Original Soundtrack). Tyce Diorio choreographed this number about art coming to life. Returning to the judges' table were Mia Michaels, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe.

Wasting no time, Vitolio and Karla and Evan and Randi were brought to the stage first. Cat revealed that only one of these couples was safe. Vitolio and Karla's Quickstep was received well by the judges. Evan and Randi performed a Broadway routine that the judges thought could have been a little better, but Cat opened her card and said they were safe, so Vitolio and Karla were in the bottom.

Next, Brandon and Janette, Kupono and Kayla, and Ade and Melissa stood on the stage to learn their fate. Brandon and Janette's Cha Cha had all of the judges screaming for joy. America agreed with the judges- Brandon and Janette are safe. Kupono and Kayla performed a vampire inspired contemporary routine that received rave reviews from the judges. Ade and Melissa performed a classical pas de deux for the first time on Dance, and the judges loved it. One of these couples was safe, and that couple was Melissa and Ade. Mia was shocked that Kayla and Kupono were in the bottom because she thought they were the best performance of the night and that it was a perfect dance.

The last spot in the bottom three couples was for either Phillip and Jeanine or Jason and Caitlin. Phillip and Jeanine performed a hip hop routine while chained together. Nigel thought it was so great that he said they should always be chained together when they dance. Jason and Caitlin performed an "out of this world" alien themed pop jazz routine. The judges didn't get the routine, but thought the dancers did a fine job. Cat announced that Caitlin and Jason were safe, and they couldn't believe it!

Next, we were in for a dance treat when Desmond Richardson and Patricia Hachey took the stage to perform to "Caprice In E Minor, Op. 1 No. 3" by Midori. Their strength and partnering skills were amazing to watch.

It was time for the dancers to perform solos, and Karla was up first dancing a contemporary solo to "Blackbird" by Dionne Farris. Then, Vitolio leaped and danced to "Here Comes Goodbye" by the Rascal Flatts. Kayla performed to "Stupid" by Sarah McLachlan. Next, Kupono danced to "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. After the commercial break, Jeanine performed a strong and powerful solo to "Moonlight Sonata" by Smart Sleep With Classical. Closing out the solos was Phillip, who popped and locked to "You'll Find A Way (Switch & Sinden Remix) by Santigold.

The guest performer was the amazing and talented Kelly Clarkson who performed "I Do Not Hook Up" from her latest album, All I Ever Wanted. She had the crowd up on their feet, nearly forgetting about the impending elimination.

It was time for the moment of truth. Which two dancers would be leaving the show? Nigel said the judges were unanimous on which girl will be leaving the show this week. He remarked that Jeanine's solo was the strongest of the evening, so she can relax until next week. Kayla is one of the favorites on the show, but the judges thought her solo was static and not from the heart. Karla is a good dancer, but hasn't captured the star quality the judges had hoped for, so they are sending her home.

As for the boys, the judges were also unanimous in their decision. The judges love what Phillip does, but thought his solo was a bit desperate. However, Phillip is safe. The judges mentioned that Vitolio looks like a star when he takes the stage, but doesn't always deliver. Nigel said that Kupono's solo was poorly choreographed and didn't prove what he could do as a dancer. Ultimately, Kupono was safe and Vitolio is leaving with Karla tonight.

Were you surprised with the results? Tune in next week as we whittle down the dancers from twelve to the Top 10 finalists.

Episode 14 - 07/08/09

The Top 12 took the stage to perform two dances with their partners. This would be the last time, at least for a bit, that the partners would be together before changing up the couples next week with the Top 10. The guest judge joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy was Broadway choreographer Tyce Diorio.

Melissa and Ade kicked off the night with a disco routine by Doriana Sanchez. Dancing to "Move On Up" by Destination, the number involved many spins and Melissa nailed the splits while being turned upside down above Ade's head. And that happened just before Ade spun Melissa behind his back! Nigel called the disco routine an "incredible start to the evening." Mary thought it was a good pick-me-up and well executed. She liked that Ade just let go and thought Melissa was a vision during the lifts. Tyce said, "That was friggin' great." He adores Melissa and said that no one would think that a ballet dancer could pull off what she did. Tyce said that Ade had "fantastic rhythm and timing."

Kayla and Kupono survived their solos last week and were ready to take on a Mia Michaels contemporary routine about addiction, a theme that hits close to home for Kupono. Dancing to "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles, Kupono and Kayla danced with much anguish and acted as well as they danced. At the end of the routine, Mia was in the audience with tears in her eyes. Nigel thought the dance was superb and called Kupono "great and malevolent." Mary also appreciated Kupono's intensity and ability to stay in character. She called Kayla "flawless" and kept her on the Hot Tamale Train. Tyce stated, "The best dancers are the best actors. I don't feel like I watched a dance, I feel like I had an experience." He called Kupono a good actor and Kayla a beast (in a good way).

Caitlin and Jason met with choreographers Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin to learn an American style foxtrot with a jazzy twist. The couple took the stage and trotted to "Minnie The Moocher" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. They looked elegant as they partnered each other across the stage. Nigel commented that Caitlin "made everything look easy when it wasn't" and compared her to Grace Kelly. He said that Jason's footwork was very good. Mary thought Jason made the dance look easy, and called Caitlin's kicks "beautiful and elegant." Tyce thought the couple looked fantastic, but would like to see Caitlin glide more.

Before the next couple took the stage, Cat announced that tickets for the So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 tour go on sale July 25. The tour kicks off this September in New Hampshire and the dancers will be headed to 40 cities around the country. Find out the details at http://fox.com/blogs/dance/2009/07/08/so-you-think-you-can-dance-tour-2009/.

Jeanine and Phillip were up next and drew traditional Russian folk dance for their first performance. They met with choreographers Youri Nelzine and Lilia Babenko to learn the steps. Wearing traditional Russian clothes and dancing to "Kalinka" by BARYNYA, Jeanine and Phillip performed with much energy. Nigel felt the dance was too childish and folksy, but the dancers did well and Phillip had good footwork. Mary said Jeanine made the dance look effortless and believable and Phillip's leg kicks were exciting. Tyce exclaimed that Jeanine is fabulous, and he thought Phillip did very well too.

Randi and Evan met with Tabitha and Napoleon to learn hip hop choreography. The theme of the dance was about a couple in love about to have a baby. Dancing to Beyonce's "Halo," there were some intricate moves where Evan made a halo with his arms and encompassed Randi. Nigel called Evan and Randi one of his favorite couples and said they bring a lot to the show. Mary thought the couple did a great job and mentioned that her eyes are always drawn to Randi. Tyce appreciated the storytelling. He said that Evan needs to dig a little deeper and find more substance, but he thinks Randi is doing great in the competition.

Brandon and Janette's first dance of the night was an Argentine Tango. They met with Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo, where Janette communicated with them in Spanish and Brandon observed with a baffled look on his face. The couple took the floor to dance to "Libertango" from Forever Tango (the original Broadway cast). They pulled off the passion, romance, and intricate kicks of the routine. Nigel was silent for a second and then stood up and clapped. Mary and Tyce leaped to their feet and joined Nigel. Nigel exclaimed, "For a ballroom routine on this show, that is as close as I've seen to perfection on this stage ever!" Mary liked how Brandon was right there in the moment every step of the way. She also called Janette "flawless," before handing the couple two first class tickets on the Hot Tamale Train. Tyce called Brandon and Janette a power couple and then chanted "Unreal!" over and over again!

Next week, the remaining 10 dancers will be set-up with a new partner for the week. The dancers let us know what they'll miss about their partners. Ade and Melissa were back for their second dance. Melissa said that she and Ade have so much fun together and she mentioned with tears in her eyes that "he's been great." Ade said he'll miss Melissa because she is amazing. The couple met with Ron Montez to learn a waltz. Melissa and Ade took the stage and waltzed to "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" by Mary J Blige. Nigel thought it was very beautiful and that Ron did a good job playing to the dancers' strengths. He recognized Melissa's beautiful lines and Ade's strength. Mary talked about Ade's effortless lifts and said that Melissa is flawless, beautiful, and mesmerizing. "Everything you two have done, you've don with class," Mary said. Tyce said that everything comes so naturally to Ade.

Kupono and Kayla have been a couple starting from the Top 16. Kayla will miss Kupono's energy, and Kupono will miss Kayla's sweaty hands and feet. The couple met with Joey Dowling to tackle a Broadway routine about love at first sight between two kids on a rooftop. Taking the floor to "The Dance At The Gym" from West Side Story (The New Broadway Cast), the two danced playfully across the stage. Nigel thought danger was lacking from the number and that they danced it well, but he needs more than that at this stage of the game. Mary thought the performance was absolutely dynamic. Tyce thought Kayla and Kupono danced well and he loves them as a couple.

Caitlin and Jason were ready for their second dance of the evening. Caitlin will miss Jason's hugs and how he's able to calm her down. Jason will miss Caitlin's quirkiness, personality, and jokes. The couple met with Mandy Moore to learn a lyrical jazz routine. Caitlin was excited because this is the first week where she and Jason can showcase their own styles. Dancing to "Show Me Heaven" by Maria McKee, Caitlin and Jason showed strength and the ability to work well together. Nigel said he didn't see a lot of chemistry between the two, but they danced the beautiful choreography very well. Mary said Jason made the dance look easy and Caitlin is outstanding and has beautiful lines. Tyce also thought her lines were beautiful and fantastic, but told the couple to take it further instead of playing it safe.

Jeanine and Phillip removed their Russian attire and were ready to perform their second dance. Jeanine said she will miss Phillip's heart, and Phillip said he will miss Jeanine's uplifting spirit. The pair met with Tony Meredith & Melanie Lapatin to learn jive choreography. In a sailor themed routine set to "Stuff Like That There" by Bette Midler, Jeanine and Phillip proved that they could do ballroom justice. Nigel said, "Phillip, without question this has been the best you've been out of your own style. You are now starting to come to life." He feels that Jeanine is one of the top 10 dancers and he'd be very surprised if she's not back next week. Mary thought Phillip showed good partner work. She said that Jeanine "was on fire tonight. You are a hot tamale. I have to put you on the train." Always animated, Tyce said, "1-888-FanFreakinTastic!" He said what Phillip lacks in technique, he makes up in performance, and he called Jeanine a star.

For their second dance of the evening, Randi and Evan met with So You Think You Can Dance alumni Anya Garnis & Pasha Kovalev to learn a sexy samba routine. Randi will miss the look that Evan gives when he's coming to get her. Evan will miss laughing with Randi at rehearsal. When practicing the samba, Randi said she was embarrassed to shake her hips in such a sexy way. When dancing on the stage to "Ritmo De Bom Bom" by Jubaba, you couldn't tell that either of them were nervous about shimmying and shaking. Nigel thought Evan was strong and did what was required, and he thought Randi looked hot, but said the dance wasn't as hot as he'd like it to be. Mary thought it was a fabulous routine and she called Randi a hot tamale. Tyce said that Evan needs to become the characters in his dances, and thought that Randi's character carried them.

The night was closed out with Janette and Brandon. Brandon reflected on Janette's ability to bring him out of his shell. Janette talked about how extremely talented Brandon is. The duo met with Wade Robson to learn a jazz routine about a couple of thieves. Dancing to "Ruby Blue" by Roisin Murphy, Brandon and Janette performed a fun, quirky, and entertaining routine. Nigel stated that there's nothing this couple can't do and predicted they'd get the most votes of the night. Mary said they "saved the best for last" and said the routine was like spontaneous combustion. Tyce said Brandon and Janette showed technical excellence.

On Thursday, the Top 12 become the final 10. Who will be touring to a town near you? Tune in to find out!

Episode 15 - 07/09/09

Twelve dancers will become the Top 10 finalists. Who will be touring across the country this summer? It would take only one hour to find out!

The Top 12 dancers took the stage to perform a group hip hop routine to "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes. This hard-hitting military dance was choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon.

This week is the final time the judges get to make a cut this season. Starting next week, it's all on America.

Birthday Boy Nigel cleared the air on the possibility of a Michael Jackson tribute. Although all of the choreographers signed on, the music rights were not released for the show's use.

The first two couples were brought out to the stage- Jason and Caitlin and Brandon and Janette. Jason and Caitlin performed the Foxtrot and a lyrical jazz routine. The judges thought they looked like stars during the Foxtrot, but weren't sure if the lyrical jazz dance was memorable and magical enough. Brandon and Janette got some of the best reviews ever on the show for both their Argentine Tango and their jazz routines. Jason and Caitlin are in the bottom three, and Brandon and Janette are in the Top 10.

Next, Randi and Evan and Phillip and Jeanine stood on the stage to find out their fate. Randi and Evan performed a hip hop routine and samba, and the judges were won over by Randi's dancing, but hoped that Evan would dig a little deeper into the characters. The judges didn't like Phillip and Jeanine's Russian folk routine, but thought it was danced well, and they loved the jive. Randi and Evan are safe again, so Phillip and Jeanine will be dancing for their place in the competition for a second week in a row.

The last two couples to find out their results were Melissa and Ade and Kayla and Kupono. Melissa and Ade performed an energetic disco routine that the judges loved and they performed an effortless waltz. Kayla and Kupono performed a moving and well-received contemporary routine and a Broadway routine that received mixed reviews. It ended up being Melissa and Ade in the bottom for the first time, and Kayla and Kupono are part of the Top 10.

Then, we were treated to some teasers from the Season 6 audition highlights. There is one more stop for auditions, and it's in Salt Lake City.
Click for Auditions Details

The bottom three couples performed their solos. First up was Caitlin who flipped and twirled to "Stand by Me" by Playing for Change. Then, Jason showed off his abs and moves to "Calm Touching" by Evaline. Next, Jeanine leaped to "Baby's Romance" by Chris Garneau. Following Jeanine, Phillip pop-locked to "The Diva Dance" from The Fifth Element (soundtrack). Melissa performed her first solo since auditions to "Kashira" by Kodo. Lastly, Ade put everything into his solo to "Windowdipper" by Jib Kidder.

As the judges deliberated for the last time this season, DJ David Guetta and Kelly Rowland took the stage and sang "When Love Takes Over."

When the judges returned, they said they were unanimous on their decision, but also agreed that all six dancers are absolutely brilliant. With that said, Caitlin was eliminated and Jeanine and Melissa made it to the Top 10. The judges were unanimous on the guys too, sending Phillip home. However, Nigel announced that both Phillip and Caitlin will get to tour with the Top 10 this fall.

Congrats to the Top 10- Ade, Brandon, Evan, Janette, Jason, Jeanine, Kayla, Kupono, Melissa, and Randi. Happy Birthday, Nigel Lythgoe!

Episode 17 - 7/16/09

America voted on Wednesday night, and the guy and the girl with the lowest votes will be leaving tonight. But first, the Top 10 took the stage to dance to "So Much Betta" by Janet Jackson. This Japanese themed routine was choreographed by Wade and Amanda Robson.

Emmy nominations were announced Thursday morning, and So You Think You Can Dance received an impressive five nominations. Four of the nominations were for Outstanding Choreography for the following dances:
-Mia Michaels for "Mercy," danced by Twitch and Katee
-Tabitha & Napoleon D'umo for "Bleeding Love," danced by Chelsie and Mark
-Tyce Diorio for "Silence," danced by Jessica and Will
-Dmitry Chaplin for "A Los Amigos," danced by Chelsie and Joshua
In addition, the show was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Makeup For A Multi-Camera Series or Special (Non-Prosthetic).

Only Mary Murphy and Debbie Allen are at the judges' table tonight. That's because Nigel is receiving an honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Bedfordshire in England.

The Top 5 ladies were brought out to the stage to find out the results. The bottom two girls will be dancing solos, which won't change the results of America's votes, but it's a way to celebrate the dancers. Cat singled out Janette first, and revealed that she was safe. Randi was next, and fell into the bottom for the first time. Next, Cat revealed that Jeanine was safe. The last spot in the bottom was for either Kayla or Melissa. Ultimately, it was Melissa who found herself in the bottom two girls .

Next, we were treated to a montage of auditions for Season 6, which looks like it's shaping up to be an exciting season. Then, the Top 5 guys were brought out to the stage. Jason was the first dancer to find out his fate, and it was good news for him. Evan received mixed reviews the night before, but America kept him safe. Kupono found out he was in the bottom. The last spot in the bottom two guys was for either Ade or Brandon. Ade ended up being the dancer in the bottom with Kupono.

The 99th episode of So You Think You Can Dance airs this Wednesday, and the 100th episode is on Thursday. On Wednesday, Mia Michaels and Ellen DeGeneres will be at the judges' table. On Thursday, the Emmy Award winning dances of the past will be performed, and Katie Holmes will also dance and sing on the show .

The four dancers in the bottom were ready to dance solos. Randi was up first and danced to "Dream" by Priscilla Ahn. The judges thought she looked beautiful. Kupono was next and danced to "Marina Gasolina" by Bonde Do Role. Cat loved his outfit and said she worships his wardrobe. Melissa danced on pointe to "Gabriel" by Lamb. The judges said she's amazing but maybe she needs to add a little more flavor to her ballet routines. Ade ended the solos with a show-stopping dance to "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers. The judges thought he was wonderful.

The audience was in for a musical treat when the Black Eyed Peas took the stage to sing "I Gotta Feeling." Confetti blasted on the stage and it was an all-around party.

It was time for the results. Randi and Melissa stood on the stage, and America's votes sent Randi packing. Kupono and Ade took the stage and found out that Kupono is leaving. No need to be sad about these eliminations, because Randi and Kupono get to tour around the country with the So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 tour!

Be sure to tune in next week for the very special 100th episode!

Episode 18 - 07/22/09

It's the 99th episode and the finale is already in two weeks. Can you believe it?! The stage looks nearly empty with only eight dancers left. Cat introduced the show in a Yigal Azrouel dress and Gucci shoes, looking fabulous as always.

The panel of experts included Mia Michaels, Mary Murphy, Emmy Award winning talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, and Nigel Lythgoe. This is Ellen's first time on So You Think You Can Dance. Cat mentioned that Ellen likes to dance on her daytime talk show, and wanted to know if she has had any formal training. Ellen replied, "By formal training I guess you mean training formally...everything I've learned, I learned from the streets." Mia has received three Emmy nominations for her work on this show, and loves being challenged to try and outdo herself. Each dancer will perform 4 times this episode- two partner dances, one solo, and one group dance.

The dances kicked off with the group performance. Season 2 runner-up Travis Wall made his debut as a choreographer on SYTYCD last week, and now he's back to work with the Top 8. The theme of the dance is a rave that is taking place in a futuristic year that has yet to be decided. They each get to show off their own styles in what Travis deemed, "a banana extravaganza!" Wearing futuristic outfits covered in glow sticks, the eight danced to "Let It Rock" by Kevin Rudolf ft. Lil Wayne. Nigel thought the whole thing was brilliant. Ellen claimed to have helped Travis with the costume design. Mary thought the dancing and choreography was great. Mia said she's beyond proud of Travis. Mia and Ellen joked that they'll wear the glow stick outfits on Thursday's show.

A short montage teasing tomorrow's 100th episode was shown. It's been 5 seasons, 11 Emmy nominations, and tomorrow Dance turns 100. On the 100th episode, the show will revisit favorite moments which will include performances from the three Emmy winning routines. In addition, Katie Holmes will perform.

The dancers picked names out of a hat to find out who their partner for this week would be. Evan picked Janette's name out of the hat, and must've been relieved that he got a partner that's shorter than he is. The couple met with Sonya Tayeh to learn a jazz routine which is based on people shutting up. Anger will escalate throughout the routine. Evan said he's used to jazz hands, but he's not used to jazz. Dancing to "Move (Metronomony Remix)" by CSS, Evan and Janette pulled off the jumps, lifts, and kicks, as well as the hand-over-mouth choreography. Nigel recognized this pairing as two big stars of the season. He's finally getting what he wants out of Evan, and he thinks Janette is wonderful at everything she does. Ellen said "it was hard-hitting and complex and rich and full bodied," and then realized she was thinking about the wine she had earlier. She finished her critique with, "Y'all were amazing." Mary said the athleticism and synchronization were spot on.  She thought it was fun to see Evan out of his element, but wants him to be a little gutsier and rougher. Mary told Janette, "You just can't take a wrong step out there!" Mia said that Evan made a step in the right direction, and "Janette, you're my favorite, favorite, favorite this season!"

Kayla was the first soloist of the night. She danced to "The Moment I Said It" by Imogen Heap and had support from her grandfather in the bleachers.

Brandon and Jeanine seemed excited to be paired together. They drew the waltz, which Jeanine has never done before. The couple met with choreographer Hunter Johnson to learn the routine. Waltzing to "May It Be" by Hayley Westenra, Brandon and Jeanine showed partnership and elegance. Nigel thought the choreography was beautiful, but that it also was an extremely tough routine. The music was so slow, Nigel likened it to pulling teeth. As a result, Nigel said that Brandon and Jeanine didn't show as much control as he would have liked. Ellen thought they were fantastic. Mary said that "might have been the slowest waltz ever on the show," which would be tough for any ballroom professional. She thought they did a respectable job, but wanted to see stronger lines. Mia expected "the length, space, and breath to be magical," but it didn't take her away like she wanted it to. However, all of the judges agreed that these two dancers are at the top of the pack.

Jason took the stage to dance his solo to Taking Back Sunday's "...Slowdance On The Inside." He leaped high into the air and showed off his strong lines.

Ade pulled his original partner, Melissa, out of the hat. They met with Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin to learn the Cha Cha. Dancing to "Yeah (Como Goza Mi Morena)" by Chino Espinoza Y Los Duenos Del Son, they shook their hips all over the dance floor. Nigel thought it was a great routine with sexy moves. He advised Melissa to watch her hip movement, and admired Ade's great moves and stature. Ellen said, "Are you two carpenters? Beacause you nailed it!" She loved it, and thought it was great. Mary thought the execution of the material was nailed, but felt like it was danced in slow motion. She also noticed that Ade's bum was perched up so high, and said Melissa's hips were either too far out or too far in. Mia said that this was Ade's worst performance. He wasn't getting down and dirty. She understood the way Melissa approached it as a ballerina.

Janette was up next and danced a solo to "Seduces Me" by Celine Dion. She switched from her normal salsa solos to performing a contemporary solo.

Jason and Kayla were paired up this week to perform a Broadway routine with Tyce Diorio. The piece is very jazzy so it suits them well. Dancing to "Mr. Monotony (from Jerome Robbins Broadway)" by Kim Criswell, the two got into character and danced well. Nigel thought Jason had terrific footwork, and even reminded him of Gene Kelly! As always, he loved Kayla's lines, and said she's a great dancer who can do anything that's thrown her way. Nigel summed it up as,
"One of the best routines of the evening." Ellen admitted, "I just wanted to see a taping and these are great seats." She continued, "I want them to hang pictures because they just nailed it." Mary thought it was a fabulous number that flowed effortlessly. She said that Jason was cool and suave, and that there's a reason why Kayla is still riding first class on the Hot Tamale Train. Then, Mary whipped out a wooden train whistle and blew it. Mia loved the piece and thought Jason and Kayla did an amazing job. She suggested that Jason works on his upper body, and that Kayla should sing or act, saying, "You will take Broadway by storm!" Mia finished by saying Kayla is the "epitome of a girl."

It was time for Ade's solo. He danced to "Hater" by Various Productions Artist and his routine was hip hop mixed with leaps, twirls, and a back flip.

Janette and Evan were ready for their second dance of the night - a rumba with Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin. At rehearsal, Evan worked on finding his sexy character. Dancing a rumba to "Heartless" by Kris Allen, Janette was in her comfort zone and Evan stepped up to the plate. Nigel loved the choreography, but said it was an exceptionally hard style to get votes with.  He said that Janette has mastered being smooth and sexy. Nigel thought there was nothing passionate about Evan's face, and that he has heavy eyelids. Ellen came to Evan's defense and said she loves his face and eyes, and told him "you have an essence about you that makes you special." She also loves Janette, and thought the dance was amazing and incredible. Mary thought that Evan did a really good job with this slower rumba. She observed that he was on time, very well connected, and had a great lift. She called Janette "Little Miss Fire and Spice and Flavor," and said Janette was a little Hot Tamale out there. Mia agreed with Ellen's comments about Evan- "You bring something different to the stage. We celebrate you and love you." This made Evan emotional. Mia also said that Janette is "just tackling everything with a smile on her face."

Melissa performed her solo to "Heads Will Roll" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Her solo was jazz on pointe.

Jeanine and Brandon's second dance was pop jazz with choreographer Laurieann Gibson, who is making her So You Think You Can Dance debut this week. Laurieann is known for counting things out with "Boom Kats" and for being a drill sergeant. Jeanine says Laurieann is giving them tough love, which is exactly what this pop jazz piece is about. Dancing to "Battlefield" by Jordin Sparks, Jeanine and Brandon were dressed in sexy fatigues and "nailed" their hard-hitting routine. Nigel said that the evening finally began with that dance. He thought Jeanine was fantastic and kept up with Brandon. Ellen joked, "You make it appealing to join some sort of armed forces." Mary called the dance strong, powerful, and dynamic, and she went to blow her whistle but traded it in for the pipes she was born with. She predicted that these two dancers will soar right into the finale. Mia said that everything Laurieann does has such conviction. She thought the couple danced in a place that was more than dance. Mia called Brandon, who she originally didn't support, a powerhouse, and was impressed with Jeanine's ability to keep up with him.

Evan took the stage for his solo. He danced to "Old Devil Moon" by Jamie Cullum and showed his personality and performed a couple of tricks with his hat.

The next soloist, Jeanine, danced to "Let The Drummer Kick" by Citizen Cope. Her solo included her signature leaps and jumps, but she danced it staccato to fit with the music.

Melissa and Ade met with Tyce Diorio to learn a contemporary number. The theme of this dance is breast cancer, and Ade will be someone for Melissa to lean on in the piece. Performing to "This Woman's Work" by Maxwell, Melissa leaped and jumped and Ade was always by her side partnering her. At the end of the emotional piece, Melissa was crying, her husband was crying, the whole audience was crying. Nigel cried and said, "Dance can express so many emotions without words." He wondered where Tyce got the strength to do something like this, and said "If this isn't [an Emmy] nomination next year, I'll be hugely surprised. For me, I think I have just witnessed one of the most memorable routines on the show." Nigel said he couldn't think of a better couple to dance this than Ade and Melissa. He found Ade's strength to be absolutely incredible, and it's what gave Melissa the courage to do the jumps. And he thought Melissa's maturity is what gave her the ability to pull this off. Ellen showed us her serious side and said she has wanted to attend a taping of this show for years, and she's honored to be here on this day to witness that dance, calling it "The most beautiful thing I've ever seen." Mary cried and said she was touched so deeply because Melissa and Ade danced it so beautifully. Gentle giant Ade nailed the vertical lift and made it seem effortless, and Melissa just flew into his arms with no care for her body, knowing he's strong. Mia cried and said, "What an important piece of work. Melissa, you're an angel. You're already there." She thought the dance was a perfect portrait.

The last solo of the night came from Brandon. Dancing to "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" by Robert Randolph & The Family Band, he started off with a great spin and ended with a ridiculous back flip.

The last dance of the night was a hip hop number choreographed by Shane Sparks and danced by Kayla and Jason. During rehearsal, Shane described the dance as a zombie themed dance, which will require a lot of heavy movement. Taking the stage to "They're Everywhere" by Izza Kizza, Kayla and Jason told a horror story with this super cool violent zombie dance. Nigel admitted that he has been disappointed with hip hop this year, but this routine was great. "The show started off flat but the last several routines have knocked it out of the ballpark," Nigel commented about tonight's show. The hilarious Ellen DeGeneres said, "Keep dancing like that and you'll have your own talk show one day." Mary observed that her puppy Jason got infected with rabies. Mia told Shane, "That was my favorite piece you've ever done on the show." She said that Kayla and Jason gave great performances.

Be sure to turn in Thursday for the milestone 100th episode. You won't want to miss your favorite dances from seasons past and Katie Holmes!

Episode 19 - 07/23/09

After almost five full seasons, So You Think You Can Dance is on its 100th show. To celebrate this milestone, we revisited the best routines and memorable moments from past seasons. Despite all the celebration, one guy and one girl will be leaving the competition at the end of the night.

The remaining eight dancers kicked off the show with a phenomenal group performance to "One" from A Chorus Line (Original Broadway Cast). They danced with shattered mirrors and in identical costumes in a routine choreographed by Mia Michaels.

Mia Michaels, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe returned to the judges' panel. Mia has worked with the show since day one. She said she loves seeing "the little babies return to the nest," and called herself Proud Mama Mia. The show means the world to Mary, who reflected on "lots of laughter, tears, some not so good dancing, and the most brilliant dancing." Like Mia, Mary was proud to see alumni from the first four seasons in the audience for the 100th episode. Nigel said, "TV, at its best, can unite the country with a shared experience," and he thinks that happened last night with Tyce's breast cancer routine. Nigel heard from breast cancer survivor Olivia Newton-John today, who said the dance said more than words could.

Cat cued up highlights from the past five seasons. We witnessed Nigel's hair go through a transformation, we saw many familiar faces, some spills, "Sex," a montage of Mary screams, swirls, twirls, and break dancing.

After a review of last night's dances, the four girl dancers waited on the stage for the results. Melissa was up first. Cat told her she's safe, and she can't really believe it. Next, Kayla found out she was in the bottom two. The last spot in the bottom two girls was for either Janette or Jeanine, who are both from Miami. Janette was in the bottom for the first time, and Jeanine was safe with Melissa.

The first of three Emmy winning performances was danced. Season 3's Hok and Jaimie returned to the stage to reprise Wade Robson's jazz piece known as "The Hummingbird and the Butterfly," set to "The Chairman's Waltz" from Memoirs of a Geisha. The dance was as beautiful now as it was two years ago!

Next, the four guy dancers stood on the stage. Cat told Ade and Jason that one of them is safe and one is in the bottom. Ade can join his partner Melissa in the safety zone, as Jason is in danger of leaving. The last spot in the bottom was for either Evan or Brandon. For the first time this season, Brandon was in the bottom two, which meant Evan was safe.

Another Emmy Award winning dance and fan favorite was recreated when Travis and Heidi from Season 2 took on Mia Michaels' contemporary "bench routine" to "Calling You" by Celine Dion. Although I've seen this dance before, it still gave me chills!

The bottom four dancers performed their solos, even though it wouldn't change the outcome of the votes. Kayla was up first and danced to "The Moment I Said It" by Imogen Heap. Jason leaped onto the stage next to "...Slowdance On The Inside" by Taking Back Sunday. Janette danced to "Seduces Me" by Celine Dion. Brandon flipped to "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" by Robert Randolph & The Family Band.

Wade Robson won another Emmy Award for choreography. This first one was for "Ramalama"- the group dance from Season 2. Benji, Travis, Ivan, Dmitry, Donyelle, Heidi, Allison, and Martha took the stage with Wade Robson himself to dance to Roisin Murphy's "Ramalama (Bang Bang). It was great to see them all back, and they danced together as if they hadn't been apart for three years!

Next, we were in for a special treat as Katie Holmes performed a Judy Garland tribute to "Get Happy," in honor of The Dizzy Feet Foundation. The talented Katie sang and danced this Tyce Diorio routine which included back-up dancers, two of which had familiar faces- Mark Kanemura and Joshua Allen from Season 4! Judy Garland's son, Joey Luft, was in the audience.

Kayla and Janette are the bottom two girls, and Cat revealed that Janette is going home. She received a standing ovation from the judges, and Cat called it "the shock of the season." Nigel said Janette was his favorite and she's fantastic and America got it wrong. Janette took the news with a smile and said that this experience made her realize how much she really loves dance, and she's not going to give up on it. Between Jason and Brandon, it was Jason who received the least amount of votes. Jason thanked everyone who has inspired him.

As Cat put it at the end of the show, "Here's to the next 100!"

Episode 20 - 07/30/09

It's the penultimate week of So You Think You Can Dance Season 5. Can you believe it?! The four dancers continuing on after this week will be in the finale vying for the title of "America's Favorite Dancer."

Cat introduced the show in a purple Balenciaga dress with a Mulberry cuff and Dsquared shoes. Joining Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe on the judges' panel this week is Lil C.

Kicking off the show was a group routine with the top guys. Ade, Brandon, and Evan met up with Sonya Tayeh to learn jazz choreography. Sonya explained that the dance has a "Willy Wonka-esque" feel to it. Dancing to "True Romance" by She Wants Revenge, the boys tackled Sonya's very grounded and staccato movements. There was even some partner work involved in the routine. Lil C said it was "a low key fantasy of mine to get Ade and Brandon in the same routine." He admired that Brandon is such a dedicated dancer. Weeks ago, Lil C stated that Ade is the one to watch out for, and Lil C still believes that. As for Evan, Lil C was impressed he didn't get swallowed by Brandon and Ade, but rather stayed very visible throughout the whole routine. Mary loved the routine and how all three dancers could kick their leg up to the same height and remain in sync during their standing back flip. Nigel thought "Evan stood out tonight because I've never seen him attempt stuff like this." He said that Ade, Brandon, and Evan have achieved things in dance that people haven't been able to do on the show in the previous seasons.

The girls picked their partners out of the hat this week, and Jeanine got Ade. They were excited to work together. Jeanine loves his strength and says their good friends, and Ade admires Jeanine's personality. The new couple met with Louis van Amstel to take on the samba. Louis mentions that this dance won't necessarily be your traditional samba. Dancing to "LoveGame" by Lady Gaga (not a traditional samba song!), Jeanine and Ade shook it on the dance floor and threw in some impressive moves. Mary thought the first 15 seconds of the dance were extremely incredible, but that the routine started to fall apart during the samba choreography. Lil C thought Jeanine looked amazing, but Ade was frolicking during the dance. He needs to get down during the samba. Nigel advised Ade to change his style with each routine, and he also thought Jeanine looked absolutely beautiful and did everything with confidence. "You went for it and you look great," Nigel said to Jeanine.

Kayla kicked off the night's solos to "You Found Me" by The Fray. She showed off her great lines, leaps, and twirls.

Melissa picked Evan's name out of a hat. The height difference comes into play again, with Evan being a little shorter than Melissa. The pair met up with Tyce Diorio to learn a Broadway routine. Tyce explained that this dance is about a nervous groom who overslept and has to face his blushing bride. Evan said this is his kind of Broadway choreography and is what he does best because it's focused on big personalities and facial expressions. Performing to "Get Me To The Church On Time (from My Fair Lady)" by Matt Dusk, Melissa and Evan put on a fun show in their wedding day undergarments. Lil C thought the couple danced well, but also thought that they should have aimed for excellence instead of just being good. Mary announced, "Get me to the church on time? This could be get me to the finale on time!" She enjoyed seeing Evan dance in his own style, and thought that Melissa really came to life. As Nigel auditions people for Season 6 of SYTYCD, he has observed that "Melissa has been inspirational to a lot of ballerinas," but none of them can adapt to different styles as well as Melissa. Nigel also thought Evan brought enough to the routine.

The next solo came from Ade, who danced to "18th Floor Balcony" by Blue October. He showed his strength and ability to move during the allotted 30 seconds.

Kayla and Brandon were obviously the last remaining dancers to pair up. They were excited to partner each other, and Brandon wants to join Kayla on the Hot Tamale Train. The duo met with Canadian choreographer Stacey Tookey, who choreographed a brilliant contemporary routine earlier this season. Stacey mentioned that the theme of Kayla and Brandon's contemporary routine is about the mistress of a married man. Taking the stage to "All I Want" by Ahn Trio ft Susie Suh, Brandon and Kayla executed the dance brilliantly and really got into character. Lil C said, "That was really, really, really, intense, and beyond intense, it was beyond amazing." He believes that everyone Kayla's been paired with was at a disadvantage throughout the season because she outshines them, but this was the first time that she was with an equal match. Mary said that Brandon has been on the Hot Tamale Train and he's staying there. In addition to calling the dancing "brilliant," Mary said Brandon was under control and Kayla is "exquisite and has never taken a wrong step." Nigel said he's so glad to have Stacey Tookey as a star choreographer on SYTYCD USA after being a star choreographer on SYTYCD Canada. Although unsure if Kayla and Brandon had enough time to cement the chemistry needed to pull off the performance, Nigel said he couldn't ask for anything more from them in regards to technique.

Next, Melissa performed a solo to "I Put A Spell On You" by Nina Simone. Her dance was a mix of lyrical moves and on pointe ballet.

Ade and Jeanine were ready for their second performance together. Jeanine said being in the finale would be the most unanticipated success of her life, as she auditioned for the show on a whim. It would mean the world to Ade to make the finale. The couple met with Tabitha and Napoleon for a hip hop routine. This is Jeanine's third time and Ade's second time doing hip hop this season. Tabitha and Napoleon described this routine as being about friends who get evicted from their apartment. The choreography involves moving out and moving boxes around the stage. Jeanine and Ade took the stage and hip hopped to "Move (If You Wanna)" by MIMS. The duo mastered the human double dutch jump rope, and they also mastered Tabitha and Napoleon's "outside the box" choreography. Lil C was impressed with how well Jeanine and Ade danced. He appreciated Ade's dirty kind of groove and how that positively impacted his partner. Mary said Jeanine is terrific, and could see them in the finale, saying, "You two will not be getting your eviction notice after that performance!" Nigel said that it is easy to applaud a good routine and overlook dancers, but Jeanine and Ade "got down" and were absolutely fantastic.

Brandon performed his solo to "O'Fortuna (from Carmina Burana)" by Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg & Kurt Prestel. When he finished his solo, he received a standing ovation from the judges. The judges don't normally comment on the solos from the Top 10 on, but Nigel said that was "one of the best solos we've ever seen on the show."

Evan and Melissa paired up again for their second routine as a couple. Melissa talked about being the oldest contestant ever on the show, and about how she was a classical ballerina who hadn't trained in other styles. Evan said he has to "bring it" because the finale is within his grasp. The pair met with Louis van Amstel to take on the "kiss of death"- the Quickstep! Not only did Louis help them with the choreography, he showed Melissa some tricks to create the illusion that Evan is taller than Melissa. The duo took the stage and danced the Quickstep to "As Long As I'm Singin" by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Lil C commended Evan on dancing bigger than he ever has before. He thought Melissa looked and danced fabulously. Mary thought the Quickstep sections of the dance weren't as great as the lifts they pulled off. Nigel said Melissa is young and extremely talented.

Jeanine hopped on the stage to perform a solo to "Feedback" by Janet Jackson. She added some funky touches to her graceful solo.

The final solo of the evening was from Evan, who started off his solo with some impressive tumbling work. He performed to "Lady Is A Tramp" by Sammy Davis Jr.

Brandon admitted that being in the top 4 will help his confidence. Kayla said making it to the finale would mean everything to her. The duo met with Doriana Sanchez to learn disco choreography that Kayla compared to a circus act. Brandon and Kayla took the stage and danced a very fast and energetic disco routine to "Dance (Disco Heat)" by Sylvester. While still huffing and puffing, the dancers headed over to the judges. Lil C liked Kayla's little groove at the beginning and called Brandon a great partner. He called them both "extreme athletes." Mary said this dance was a "homerun tonight." She thought Kayla got her groove on and Brandon knocked it out of the ballpark, and kept them on the Hot Tamale train. Nigel got up from his chair and jumped and screamed and danced. "This is what the show is all about!" he exclaimed. He loved that this couple showed the diversity of contemporary to disco all in one night.

The last dance of the night was from the top three girls, who also met with Sonya Tayeh to learn choreography. Sonya mentioned that the theme of the dance is superheroes, and she gave each girl a superhero persona: Kayla is Storm, Jeanine is Wonderwoman, and Melissa is Buttercup. The girls compared the routine to running a marathon, and mentioned the importance of being in sync. Lil C thought the girls didn't go for the gusto and that they were being too courteous by not out-dancing one another. Mary said the girls are "the epitome of strong, versatile, flexible, sexy, talented dancers." She thought Kayla stood out because she was given some tougher moves to pull off. Nigel thought the three ladies looked fabulous in their costumes.

Tune in for the last elimination show before the finale. Which contestants will be dancing for the title of "America's Favorite Dancer" next week?

Episode 21 - 07/30/09

It's the last elimination before the finale! Cat introduced the show in a sparkly green vintage dress, diamond stud earrings, and Sonya Rykiel shoes.

"Send In The Clowns" by Judy Collins began to play, and the Top 6 dancers emerged from a present, while wearing clown costumes. The dancers used facial expressions, the help of makeup, and their bodies to evoke many emotions. This routine was choreographed by Tyce Diorio, who has done a tremendous job with choreography this year!

The final 3 girls stood on the stage, and Cat recapped Wednesday's performances to Jeanine first, and then made her wait until she also spoke about Melissa and Kayla. Cat said she could send one person into next week's finale immediately. That doesn't necessarily mean they are the dancer who received the most votes, but they don't need to dance a solo tonight. The first person in the finale is...Jeanine! She seemed so excited and like she genuinely couldn't believe it. Mary and Lil C are standing for her.

This episode, we were treated to the Emmy nominated dances from Season 4 performed again by the original dancers. Dancing to Tyce Diorio's "Silence" from the Unfaithful soundtrack were Jessica King and William Wingfield. Will has grown short braids since last year. They both looked very natural and beautiful, and it seemed like no time has passed since they last danced together.

Next, the three guys took the stage to find out their fate. Cat talked to Ade first, and then made him wait until after she introduced Evan and Brandon. Just like the girls, Cat was able to send one guy through to next week's finale, who may not necessarily have the most votes, but they're not dancing a solo tonight. She revealed that Brandon is the dancer moving on to the finale and he's so excited that he's shaking. Ade and Evan were very supportive of their friend. Mary said she has believed in Brandon since day one, and she told Brandon to believe in himself.

It was time for another Emmy nominated routine from Season 4. Dancing to Mia Michaels' routine, "Mercy" by Duffy, were Twitch Boss and Katee Shean. You may remember this number best as the routine with the door and an Amy Winehouse looking Katee. This dance is still so much fun, and Twitch and Katee have definitely mastered that kiss!

The third Emmy nominated routine of the night was choreographed by Season 2 contestant Dmitry Chaplin. Back on the SYTYCD stage were Chelsie Hightower and Joshua Allen, with a tango to "A Los Amigos" from Forever Tango (original Broadway cast album). It looks like Josh donated his dreads to Will!

Melissa was the first dancer to perform her solo from the previous night again. The solo doesn't impact the voting, but it's more of a celebration of dance. She danced to "I Put A Spell On You" by Nina Simone. Ade was the next soloist, and he danced to "18th Floor Balcony" by Blue October.

The specialty dance act this week was from the first ever winners of America's Best Dance Crew, JabbawockeeZ. They performed on stage to "Freak-A-Zoid" by Midnight Star.

The final Emmy nominated dance of the night was Tabitha and Napoleon D'umo's "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis and danced by Chelsie Hightower and Mark Kanemura. This fan favorite dance still gives me chills!

Kayla took the stage and performed her solo to The Fray's "You Found Me." She quickly ran off the stage with Cat so that Evan could flip across the stage while performing his solo to "Lady Is A Tramp" by Sammy Davis Jr.

Musical guest Sean Paul and his back-up dancers took the stage to perform "So Fine."

After 10 dances and a musical guest in just under one hour, it was time to find out the results. Kayla is moving on to the finale, and Melissa is leaving the show. Ade and Evan were next. Cat revealed that Evan is moving on to the finale and Ade is leaving the show.

Tune in next Wednesday and Thursday for the finale! Congratulations Jeanine, Brandon, Kayla and Evan!

Episode 22 - 08/05/09

Season Finale - Part 1

It's here! The Top 4 dancers have been selected and were ready to perform at the Kodak Theater. Cat, wearing Paul & Joe Jeans, Camilla Skovgaard shoes, and Top Shop earrings, introduced Brandon Bryant, Jeanine Mason, Evan Kasprzak, and Kayla Radomski to much applause, and their fellow finalists were in the audience cheering them on.

The judges at the final performance show of Season 5 are Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe. Adam was blown away at the thought of "3000 live and millions viewing to see dancers!"

Brandon, Jeanine, Evan, and Kayla met with Wade and Amanda Robson to learn jazz choreography. The theme of the dance is about two football jocks that are pursuing two cheerleaders. Jeanine mentioned that "not many people were probably expecting to see cheerleading on SYTYCD." This fast jazz routine, set to "Boys Boys Boys" by Lady Gaga, involved pom poms, letterman jackets, and a lot of energy.

Jeanine and Evan met with Sonya Tayeh to learn a jazz routine. It's about a man who is trying to keep his girl and she doesn't really care about him any more. Jeanine essentially gets to beat Evan up. Dancing to "Heartbreaker" by MSTRKRFT ft. John Legend, Jeanine and Evan put up a good fight on the large Kodak stage. Adam thought the performance was great and said he never saw Jeanine or Evan coming, but thought "Jeanine dominated week after week" and that "this season will never be the same without [Evan]." Mary thought Jeanine and Evan delivered a strong performance. Although she thought "Jeanine stood out a little bit more," she said "Evan is no punching bag and held his own." Nigel thought Jeanine had the needed strength to dominate the large stage, and he pointed out his favorite moves in the routine from both dancers.

Cat sat down and interviewed Brandon. Despite his entire body being in pain, Brandon talked about how amazing it is to be on the show. He misses Janette and said he wouldn't be where he is today if it weren't for her. His favorite dance was his Argentine Tango with her. He talked about Mia's tough love, and then said he thinks he could win if he stays focus and has fun. Brandon took the stage in striped board shorts and danced his very powerful solo to "Dies Irae" by Karl Jenkins. He ended with splits and got up without using hands or moving his legs around. Adam shouted, "That is competing!" Mary got goose bumps and became choked up and said "You are athletic. You are dynamic. You defy gravity. You are born to dance." Nigel told Brandon, "You just wiped out the opposition."

Kayla and Brandon got to perform a Broadway number choreographed by Tyce Diorio. Tyce mentioned that it's a fun routine, but Kayla also said it is tough choreography and Tyce is holding nothing back. Brandon lay on a table and flat-lined as Kayla emerged from behind him as "Bye Bye Love" from All That Jazz (Soundtrack) played. He jumped off the table and danced with Kayla, and the two pulled off flips, splits, and turns that were jaw dropping. Adam stood up and punched the table and said, "That was so good! To see you dance together is just heaven." He said there is nothing Kayla can't do, and that Brandon was an animal up there. Mary said "You guys are rock stars, you are dance stars, and you have been frontrunners since the beginning." Nigel thought Kayla and Brandon were superb together. In addition to loving Tyce's choreography, Nigel said to the dancers, "You brought the entertainment value. You filled the stage."

Cat sat down with Jeanine to chat about her journey. Jeanine started dancing at age 3 because her mom knew she'd be a dancer since she was born. Now she's glad she was forced to dance. Jeanine's least proud moment on the show was her Russian folk dance routine. Her favorite performance was Travis Wall's contemporary routine she performed with Jason Glover. She said she felt so comfortable with him and admitted that the kiss they shared wasn't choreographed! Jeanine is determined to win SYTYCD and hopes to represent the show well if she wins. Dancing her solo to "Por Una Cabeza" by The Tango Project, Jeanine put a rose between her teeth and started with a solo tango which showed her personality. She also included an amazing pirouette. When she was finished, the crowd gave her a standing ovation. Adam couldn't believe what he saw, "Are you kidding?! Those pirouettes! That was a risky solo. You just killed it! Jeanine I am so happy for you. You are such a beautiful woman." Mary said, "That solo was like the best thing you've done on the show at the right place at the right time." Nigel thought Jeanine pulled off a very brave solo, and said, "You're in the final two as far as I'm concerned."

Even Brandon and Evan get to dance together this week. They met with Lauriann Gibson to learn pop jazz choreography in which Evan and Brandon will be physically battling it out for the title of "America's Favorite Dancer." Dancing to "Nasty" by Janet Jackson, Evan and Brandon duked it out with dance. Adam thought that Brandon beat Evan in that dance, and Mary agreed. Nigel shared that the "choreographers say that Evan's work ethic is beyond compare." However, he doesn't think Evan has the ability to be "nasty" and thought Brandon won this battle.

Kayla and Jeanine met with choreographer Mia Michaels to learn contemporary choreography. The piece is about the journey they've gone on and the layers they have shed, and it requires the use of the entire large stage. Dancing to "The Four Sections: IV. Full Orchestra" by Steve Reich. These two ladies showed off their strength while being graceful, and by the end they weren't wearing very much! Adam joked that it was "like watching the world's longest wardrobe malfunction." Mary thought this piece had a very relevant concept tonight. She said that Jeanine and Kayla are, "the strongest two women we've ever had in the finale." Nigel thought this dance really stood out and he didn't want it to end. He said that Jeanine peaked at the right time.

When Cat sat down with Evan, he confessed that he wasn't sure he was going to audition again this season, but was persuaded by someone at his school, and his brother decided to come with. His brother Ryan is his best friend. Evan said the toughest thing about being on the show is being away from his family. When Cat asked him why he thinks people are voting for him, he said, "I'm something they've never seen on the show as the first Broadway dancer." His favorite routine was the "butt" routine that Mia choreographed and that he danced with Randi Evans. Taking the stage to "The Best Is Yet To Come" by Michael Buble, Evan's solo showed off his dynamic personality. At the end he kicked and chased his hat all the way to Cat. Adam told Evan, "What you do, you do unbelievably great." Mary said, "Evan is unique and does his own thing. He puts new energy into a dance form that America has kind of lost track of." Nigel said that Evan brings something special to the competition, but he doesn't think he's grown all that much over the last several weeks.

Kayla and Evan met with Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin to learn jive choreography. They practiced their really quick routine at rehearsal. Dancing to "T.R.O.U.B.L.E." by Travis Tritt, the duo pulled off their fun country style jive done in cowboy boots. Adam thought it was "a strong showing for Evan." He also appreciated the lift sequence. Mary didn't think Evan was as strong during the jive, but she thought that Kayla stole the show. "I loved every second that you were on the stage," Mary told Kayla. Nigel said that Evan and Kayla "both came out with guns blazing." He thought Kayla brought some needed personality to the routine, and he wondered where that personality had been all season. At the end of Nigel's comments the entire theater chanted "Evan, Evan!"

Cat sat down with Kayla to look at her journey. She started dancing when she was two years old and has been dancing every day since then. Her very supportive grandparents have been with her throughout her entire dance career, and her crying grandfather said he has never seen her dance like this before. Her favorite routine was the "Addiction" piece with Kupono. Kayla said that dance got an amazing response not only from the judges, but they received emails and phone calls from the public. She says she has what it takes to win because she's not just a dancer, she's also a performer. Kayla says always pushes and never gives up until she gets what she wants. Dancing her solo to "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" by Eurythmics, Kayla showed off her signature lines and long legs. Adam said the "solo was fine but didn't show who you really are." He also said that Kayla joins the ranks with some of the best dancers this show has ever seen. Mary paid Kayla many compliments: "You are gifted. You have been touched by an angel somehow. Your quality of movement, extensions, and lines are exquisite." Nigel said that Kayla "justly deserves being voted America's Favorite Dancer."

Jeanine and Brandon closed out the night with a Paso Doble by Louis van Amstel. At rehearsal, we saw Jeanine getting up close and personal with the floor over and over again. Dancing to "Tetsujin" from The Matrix Revolutions (soundtrack), this Paso Doble had power, strength, passion...and leather. After their performance, Jeanine and Brandon received a standing ovation from audience. Adam enthusiastically commented, "You filled out everything and your transitions were great. The movement never ended. That had so much strength and power." Mary let out her first really big scream of the night. She said the routine was absolutely phenomenal and they had just the right intensity. Mary followed this praise with more screams and air punches. Nigel screamed in Mary's face and then told Brandon and Jeanine, "You really carried it off. I think you two are in the front for me this evening. You are just edging the other two out."

At the end of the show, Cat put the judges on the spot and asked them who is going to win. Adam said, "Brandon you tore it up tonight. Jeanine you came out as a dark horse. Evan you may be one of the most popular dancers the show has ever seen. And I just called Kayla one of the best dancers ever on the show." Mary said she was glad the decision was out of her hands. Nigel said, "Evan you're such a lovely, lovely lad. Whatever happens tonight, we know there is another Kasprzak in Season 6. Kayla you are so beautiful and I wished your personality came out before tonight. You could do no more than that tonight. I think the winner tonight is going to be Brandon or Jeanine."

Thursday's show is going to be amazing- we have the best routines of the season, incredible surprises, and the results! Who will be the America's Favorite Dancer? You only have to wait a few more hours to find out!

Episode 23 - 08/06/09

Season Finale, Part 2, Results

Welcome to So You Think You Can Dance...THE FINALE! Who is America's Favorite Dancer? We'd find out in two hours! In addition, some of the seasons most memorable dances would be performed.

The show kicked off with a group number that included all Top 20 dancers. Dancing to "Brand New Day" from The Wiz, it was great to see them back on the stage together.

Cat, wearing an Alexander Wang dress, announced that a record breaking 21.6 million votes were cast the previous night. Then, Cat introduced the judges, along with 3,500 audience members, for the last time this season. The seven choreographers/judges on the panel were Lil C, Mia Michaels, Tyce Diorio, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe. The rest of the choreographers were in the audience.

A Season 5 auditions recap was played and we got to revisit the journey the Top 20 took to get to the show and what happened once they were on the show. Cat announced that a total of 1/4 billion votes have been cast in SYTYCD history! Next, we looked back at the previous night's performances.

Since it was the grand finale, the judges got to pick their favorite dances of the season to be performed live on stage again. Adam Shankman got to pick his favorite first, and he chose Tabitha & Napoleon's "Mad" by Ne-Yo, which was danced by Phillip and Jeanine. It is impressive that this was the first dance of the entire season, and it was such a standout.

Nigel's pick was Miriam & Leonardo's Argentine Tango to "Libertango" from Forever Tango (original Broadway cast album). Janette and Brandon were back on stage to reprise the dance that they received a standing ovation for.

Debbie Allen chose the Waltz performed by Asuka and Vitolio that Louis van Amstel choreographed to "Dreams Are More Precious" by Enya. This dance dates back to the second week of the competition.

Mary selected Travis Wall's contemporary routine to "If It Kills Me (The Casa Nova Sessions)" by Jason Mraz. Jeanine and Jason rekindled the passion, and although Jeanine dropped the necklace, it was still a flawless routine.

Mia was the next judge to choose a favorite performance, and she selected Kayla and Max's samba to "Jum Bah Day" by House of Gypsies, which was choreographed by Louis van Amstel. This was another standout dance from the first week of the show.

Debbie's next pick was the group routine to "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" by Pitbull, and choreographed by Dmitry Chaplin and Tabitha and Napoleon D'umo. All 20 dancers got to participate in this dance too.

Next, the So You Think You Can Dance Australia winner, Talia Fowler, performed. She is a ballerina who danced a jazz piece that Sonya Tayeh choreographed to "Shot You Down" by Audio Bullys.

Lil C chose the Bollywood routine choreographed by Nakul to "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire (soundtrack). Caitlin and Jason danced it well and even recreated the kiss at the end, making Jason's kiss tally of the night at two!

Then, the Top 4 dancers were brought out for the first results of the night. Cat revealed that Kayla is in fourth place. We saw her journey and were reminded of how consistent she has been throughout the competition.

Next, Adam picked Mia's butt inspired contemporary dance. Randi and Evan took the stage to "Koop Island Blues" by Koop ft Ane Brune, and they continued to have fun with this piece.

Mary chose Louis van Amstel's Paso Doble that Jeanine and Brandon danced the night before. They recreated their intense and powerful dance to "Tetsujin" from The Matrix Revolutions (soundtrack).

It was time for more results. Cat brought Evan out to join Jeanine and Brandon. The dancer in third place is Evan.

Another one of Nigel's favorite moments was when "Mary admitted to using Botox." But another one of Nigel's favorite dances was Mia's addiction piece with Kayla and Kupono to "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles. This dance still gave me chills this time around.

The special guest dance act was the Rage Boyz Crew who came back to SYTYCD to flip and hip hop to "Feel It" by Colby O'Donis & Mauli-b.

Tyce picked Doriana Sanchez's disco routine with Brandon and Janette to "Loving Is Really My Game" by Brainstorm. The super fast routine was executed brilliantly with no missteps this time!

The last judge's favorite of the night was Mia's pick of Tyce's breast cancer themed piece to "This Woman's Work" by Maxwell. Melissa and Ade were back to carry off this special number. Tyce was happy to report that his friend, for whom he choreographed this dance, is now cancer free.

There was one more performance of the night with the Top 8 performing Mia's group routine of "One" from A Chorus Line (Original Broadway Cast). At the end of the dance, the judges got up on stage and joined the dancers!

It was the moment we've all been waiting for. Who would be America's Favorite Dancer? We relived Brandon and Jeanine's journeys. After the most votes in the show's history, the Season 5 winner of So You Think You Can Dance is...JEANINE!

Congratulations to Jeanine Mason and the rest of the Top 20. Thanks to everyone for reading along, and we'll do this all over again in four weeks!

Mark Your Calendars:

A special featuring favorite routines from previous seasons of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE will air Wednesday, Sept. 2 (8:00-8:58 PM ET/PT), and the sixth season of the original dance competition will premiere Wednesday, Sept. 9 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
