This dance style evolved out of the urban musical cultures of California, New York, and Philadelphia. It includes the sub-genres funk, locking, popping, krump, lyrical hip-hop, and breakdancing. Hip-hop began in the '70s as freestyle street dance often resulting in head-to-head battles, but it's evolved into a mainstream, choreographed dance form. The style is a substantial part of the "So You Think You Can Dance" culture, and two winners of the competition have come from the hip-hop world: Russell Ferguson (Season 6) and Joshua Allen (Season 4). Out of the many hip-hop performances on the show, none was more memorable than the first guy-guy pairing of the Season 7 competition that matched two opposite dancers: Ballet dancer Alex Wong and Hip Hop dancer tWitch Boss. When they performed a NappyTabs' piece to "Outta Your Mind," they received the loudest and longest standing ovation in SYTYCD history.
