Jake Johnson as Nick

NEW GIRL marks Jake Johnson's second collaboration with executive producer/writer Liz Meriwether, after the feature film comedy "No Strings Attached."

This fall, Johnson will be seen in the feature film "Safety Not Guaranteed," with Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass. This summer, he completed filming the feature drama "The Pretty One," opposite Zoe Kazan. Johnson's additional feature credits include "21 Jump Street," opposite Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum; "Paper Heart," opposite Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi; and "Ceremony," with Uma Thurman.

A native of Chicago, Johnson is a graduate of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2004, he has worked extensively in the entertainment industry as both an actor and writer. He has had the fortune of working with such luminaries as Larry David, John Landis, David Mamet, Adam McKay, Bob Odenkirk, Ivan Reitman and Nick Stoller.

He resides in Los Angeles.

Like Jess, Nick Miller has been trying to mend a wounded heart. Although he split from his girlfriend, Caroline, some time before Jess separated from Spencer, he could still relate to her pain.

In the wake of his broken relationship, Nick dropped out of law school and started working as a bartender. To say that he's going through a transitional period is an understatement. Yet Nick remains the most levelheaded, if slightly pessimistic, roommate of the bunch. And, although it may be based on an as-yet-unrealized affection for Jess, he's also her biggest protector.

That doesn't mean they haven't had a few uncomfortable moments. Everyone got in on the jokes after Jess walked in on Nick naked. Then there was that awkward almost-three-way among Jess, Nick, and their landlord. And following a misdiagnosis of thyroid cancer by Jess's OB-GYN friend, Nick certainly took a few moments to reevaluate his priorities.

Even though Nick did his best to move on after Caroline, his romance with lawyer Julia faltered when she gave him a cactus for a gift and he overanalyzed the meaning. Trying to rekindle his romance with Caroline, he considered moving in with her and almost left his roommates in the dust. But in the end Nick couldn't say goodbye to Winston, Schmidt, and especially Jess. He returned to the loft and the comfort of being with his best friends.
