Dance Dictionary

Latin Jazz

This dance discipline employs the traditional techniques of Latin styles like rhumba, samba, and salsa combined with modern street jazz elements of acrobatics, quick and complicated foot work, and flourished turns. The result is a hip and sexy explosion of edgy moves with seductive flair. The music features elements of African drum beats and Latin American percussion instruments, like the guiros and timbales, alongside conventional jazz sounds from piano and bass. In Season 3, Lacey Schwimmer and Neil Haskell performed a Latin Jazz routine to the song "Acid" by Ray Barretto, which was choreographed by Maria Torres.
