Funk

This group of street dance styles originated in California during the 1970s. It includes locking (freezing and holding movements), popping (jerky snapping of the legs and muscles), bugaloo (fluid rolls of the hip, knees, and head), and electric bugaloo (combining popping and bugaloo). While funk has since been incorporated into the hip-hop genre, it's often overlooked that these dances existed before the '80s culture hit the streets. Only one pure funk dancer has graced the "So You Think You Can Dance" stage: Season 2's Jason Williams. But Season 4 runner-up, "tWitch" Boss, performed two memorable funk solos, one to Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and another to Midnight Star's "Midas Touch."
