The X-Files Super Fans!
The X-Files Super Fans!
Meet the fans-
Introduce yourselves, what makes you both a super fan?
I’m Avi Quijada from XFilesNews, also known as XFN. I’ve been the editor-in-chief of the site since 2008 and a fan since the 1996. Watching the show became this comforting ritual as I fell in love with its writing and the value of its themes, and that made me want to become a storyteller. The standards and accomplishments met by The X-Files cast and crew have always served as an example for my own work, so when I step onto a set, it’s often accompanied by lots of X-Files anecdotes. My fellows at the AFI Conservatory nicknamed me "The X-Files girl” because of this and it has accompanied me ever since.
I’m Tiffany Devol from XFilesNews. I’ve been the public relations and content director for the site since 2008 and a fan since 1993. The X-Files struck a chord with me from the very beginning. As a little girl, it was the first time I had been exposed to a strong female role model on television.
What is your proudest achievement with the website?
One of our proudest achievements would have to be the reach and success of the "Believe in the Future" Campaign. Following the release of the second X-Files feature film in 2008, the cast and crew of the series urged the fans to make their voices heard if they wanted the return of Mulder and Scully. Collaborating with Philes and fan sites all over the world, we began the campaign to do just that, to Believe in the Future of this franchise. With liaisons in over 30 countries, the fans of the series wrote postcards, sent letters, created posters, took photos, united with the cast and crew of the show and proved to everyone that The X-Files would be welcomed back.
We were also the first outlet to have a comprehensive interview with Chris Carter following the final confirmation of the return of the show in March. It was a very surreal moment for all of us. In reality, sometimes it feels like our greatest achievement is that XFN has been around for this long, seeing the fandom evolve and come together into the experience of seeing the show return and we’ve enjoyed every minute of it.
Where were you when you heard The X-Files was returning and how did you both react?
Tiffany - For me, that day was a normal day at work. We were busy, working hard on proposals when my phone started to buzz. Instead of a couple of messages, I was getting hundreds. I knew before even picking up the phone that the series had been greenlit.
Avi - It sounds really dramatic, but I was actually at the ER, recovering from a case of anemia. I was glued to my phone and worried that the onslaught of traffic would crash the site, but sure enough we’d done enough practice runs to prepare for this moment and the whole XFN team was on it and ready to go.
DO you have a favorite episode of The X-Files?
Tiffany – I have so many favorites. Normally when asked this question, I have a revolving list of 10 that I mention. If forced to choose one, I would go with "Milagro".
Avi - I concur with Tiffany; "Milagro" is one of my favorites, possibly because I connect as a writer. My ultimate favorite though would be my first X-File - Season 4’s “Unrequited”. It still captures me as the first time.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Tiffany – Chocolate.
Avi – This is very hard, because I’m a foodie, but I think I would have to go for a Venezuelan cheese empanada. It’s golden, and crispy, and filled with the most amazing version of sharp white cheese.
