When high school geek Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller) meets his dream girl, Mary Jensen (Cameron Diaz), and she asks him to their prom, he thinks that his losing streak is over. Little does he know that it has only just begun. When Ted becomes incapacitated the night of the prom and Mary moves to Florida with her family, he thinks that he will never see her again.

At the urging of his best friend, Dom (Chris Elliott), Ted decides to track her down through a private detective, Pat Healy (Matt Dillon), and soon finds that he is not the only one who thinks that there is something special about Mary.
