As senior year began, Finn was happy to be reunited with Rachel but unsure of his future. He held on to one last hope for a college football career when a recruiter from Ohio State University came to his game, but it turned out the school was only interested in his teammate Shane. Finn feared he'd be stuck in Lima forever.
Still searching for his life's calling, Finn considered a career in the Army. But when his mom revealed that his military serving father did not die in battle - as Finn has thought - but instead overdosed on drugs, Finn changed his mind.
Rachel comforted the crestfallen Finn when she heard the news. Moved by her compassion, Finn proposed to her. They decided to get married right away, but when bridesmaid Quinn had a car accident on the way to the ceremony, the event was called off.
Having received a stack of college brochures from Emma, Finn revealed to Rachel that he had applied to the Actor's Studio in New York City and planned to move there with her. But his rejection letter from that school arrived shortly after New Directions won nationals.
After graduation, Finn and Rachel were driving to their rescheduled wedding, when he made a pit stop at the train station. He then told her that he was breaking up with her and joining the Army. And he put her on the next train to New York City.
