Scoop from the Big Guys

It’s TCA time once again! Here’s what the men in charge — Fox Chairman Peter Rice and President Kevin Reilly — have to say about Dollhouse.

You guys made a difference, according to HitFix’s live recap of the executive session:

10:00 a.m. Reilly jokes that the “Save ‘Dollhouse’” campaign began before the show ever premiered. He adds that although he wasn’t scared of the fans, the devotion of fans impacted the decision to bring the show back.

Televisionary covers the executive session panel:

Reilly said that the Save Dollhouse campaign (”you mean the one that started before we made any of the show?”) “factored in from a more positive place… They nurtured the show and stuck with it. They are there with Joss and that’s what gave us such a positive cumulative rating…

“Joss is an incredible creator of TV shows,” countered Rice, “and the show got better and better as the season went on.”

As for what fans should expect from Season Two of Dollhouse this fall, Rice and Reilly were candid about the fact that things had greatly improved and that the series would just get better and better.

“Keep doing what he’s doing,” said Rice of what Whedon would do for Dollhouse’s sophomore season. “That is really the gift of Joss… he was open about those hiccups. In the second half, he really found the show and started having fun with it… It’s going to be much smoother sailing this year.”

  1. Fox deserves to be consumed by a black hole Says:

I hate you so much right now.

  2. Amanda N Says:

WOOHOO!! I couldn’t be happier that this show is coming back! I don’t know what they mean by hiccups though. I thought the show started strong and ended great. I CAN’T WAIT FOR SEASON TWO! :)

  3. Kimber Shattuck Says:

I’m psyched that there will be a season two. I don’t know the history of the show’s production but your casting is kick a$$.

Many former BSG fans watch this show and would like to continue watching something other than the nonsubstantive garbage that remains on the networks.

(p.s….i had noticed the name “dollhouse” on my cable guide but had no idea what it was until i pulled it up on hulu)

    Thanks Fox!

  4. The One True b!X Says:

Remember “Watch DOLLHOUSE Week” back in May? It has a sequel. Fridays starting August 14: Double DOLLHOUSE Days. http://www.watchdollhouseweek.com/dollhousedays/

  5. Lisa Says:

Can’t wait for season 2 to start. I’m rewatching the show with my boyfriend on DVD now!!

  6. Cindy M. Says:

Thank you guys so much for the “return engagement”. Can’t wait for season two to start. I’m a huge Eliza Dushku fan and Joss, what can I say… you’ve got gold. Hey, I’m 46. I love how he hits on every emotion. Reality with a twist. “Eliza and Joss”, Fox’s dynamic duo!! And again thank you Eliza and Joss for the 1000% of yourselves you give for us fans. And thank you Fox for knowing whatcha got!

  7. Jeannie Says:

Yay for Dollhouse Season 2! Joss is one of the most talented writers/directors in Hollywood these days! Look at how many of his shows have impacted the lives of people! I can’t wait for Dollhouse Season 2… Great actors, great plots, great writing!

    Woohoo!!!

  8. crimson phoenix Says:

“Slow starting” is a good way to put it, but after a few episodes, the Whedonisms that make us laugh started to show up, and season one ended with a fabulous bang. Thanks to Fox and everyone who has stood behind the creative genius of Joss Whedon. And thanks to Eliza Dushku for being not only the lead but executive director. It shows faith in Whedon’s vision, and it is echoed by the fans! I’m definitely looking forward to season 2!

  9. jim Says:

YESSS!!! I love this show! This is an better show than TrueCallings and I think everyguy is ecstatic to have Eliza coming into the the living room every week! Whedon’s ideas are killer stuff and myself along with friends will be hitting back flips season 2 premiere night! thnx again for the great show and letting us go further into house

  10. Arthur Says:

I am SO SO glad this show is coming back! I loved every episode of season one, and can’t wait to see what Joss has in store.

  11. Proverbial Says:

I’m so glad Whedon is getting a much deserved 2nd season! I had hoped that just as we learned to be vocal about shows that we love, Fox had learned to give intelligent TV a chance to grow.

  12. Denem Says:

Awsome I loved season one watched every moment cant wait for season two

  13. wade Says:

Way to go Joss and company. Hoping that Dollhouse will take off and give us fellow nerds much more seasons. Its been too long since Mutant Enemy could spread there wings.
On a personal note, It wouldnt be Mutant Enemy without James Marsters”spike” or Tom Lenk”andrew” from Buffy. And would it be asking too much for Nathan Fillion”caleb” to make an appearance? I also hope that Felicia Day sticks around for awhile too.

  14. Pearl Says:

I love this show. it’s been my new addiction. I miss Buffy and Joss Whedon’s brilliance. Can’t wait for the new season to start!

  15. grant Says:

well all i can say is its about time the head morons at fox are actually listening to people that watch their crummy network. sorry if i sound jaded but a network that cares 0 about fans is doomed to be right where they have always been… on the bottom rung of the ladder. i dont even bother complaining to them when they cancel a show anymore what i do is watch a week of their prime time offerings and i write down all the sponsors and when they cancel a show that i lke i simply write letters to all their sponser companies and tell them i am not using their products because they are affiliated with FOX. im glad they gave dollhouse a second season but i doubt we will see a third so ill keep sending their sponsors complaints until they bring back tscc and firefly. the only thng they care about at that network is the bottom line and i know i cant affect it much but ill do my best ;)

  16. Ronald Klug Says:

While I will watch ANYTHING with Eliza in it, I am an avid fan of Dollhouse. I have not missed an episode. I loved Trucalling
as well. Joss is a has a great imagination and his shows are
consistantly good. I am sad that the Sarah Connor Chronicles
and BSG was cancelled. Both great shows as well but at least
    we still have the dollhouse.

  17. Johanakin Says:

I agree on watching all things Whedon, Dushka, et al. (Also loved TruCalling, etc. Trudyk was amazing, ending Doll House 1.) I live in Houston where I haven’t noted a single ad for Doll House 2. I would have expected reruns a few weeks (Whedon always did that for Buffy & Angel); AND most other shows do that now. IN FACT, though Buffy/Angel couldn’t win industry awards, NOW THE WHOLE INDUSTRY COPIES EVERYTHING WHEDON DID ALL ALONG. And often–poorly. If FOX had a brain things would be different, but they’re okay compared to a lot of more-worthless TV & networks, especially cable copying each other and English shows ad infinitum. There are obviously way too many channels for limited human talents to fill. I suppose the entertainment industry is much like the education industry, where the teachers get low pay and most funding is wasted by the admin, often resulting in a poor product. It’s very tough for a good teacher to REACH the crowd.

  18. Joan McMullin Says:

I am SOOOOO happy that they let Dollhouse stay on. I have been so angry with them at Fox for canceling my favorite programs too soon. Thank heavens they gave this one a chance. I just loved this show from episode one so please stop saying, “It started slow.” DID NOT! I was hooked from DAY ONE! It just got more and more addictive. And Please, Friday night? Come on, it takes anything a while to catch on if you’re going to put in on Friday night!

  19. T. Story Says:

Just so you know, I really like Joss Whedon’s work. I love Firefly (wish THAT was still on), Angel and I watched Buffy every week, every episode right up till the end. BUT, I stopped watching FOX when they canceled “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” but kept “Dollhouse”. People that believe FOX listens to its fans couldn’t be more wrong. Which is why I am now an ex-fan.

  20. Eskimo Says:

…yeah it’s REALLY [insert sarcasm here] going smooth this season. >< I was disappointed enough to not have it for one week, now a wait ’til December?! Agh! I can’t even express my frustration in words!

  21. Diane Says:

I love, love, love this show. What is up with this 5 week hiatus? Fox is ridiculous. This is such a great show and they take it off during November sweeps. Come on. Don’t they realize how many people love this show.
They better renew it again. Why do networks always love the garbage shows they put on and not real quality story telling like Joss has always provided.

  22. Peregrine Says:

What’s with the decision to not air during Sweeps???! FOX, are you insane? Could you quit hanging a sword over the proverbial neck of shows and only giving them the green light for 13 episodes? The fans are invested. We want to watch a full season! Maybe if you quit issuing Nielsen boxes to old people who only watch “reality shows” and crappy cooking shows, you’d have a better indication of how many people are actually watching.

Joss Whedon’s prior shows have all been major bank for the network. Buffy and Angel had decent ratings for years, Firefly had such a fan outcry for more that the show got a movie, and now you’re dubious about Dollhouse? The ratings are low now because the fans are scared to get invested anymore, after the way shows are renewed only to disappear mid-season.

Renew the show. Start looking at your pings on the streaming episodes on your own website. Check Amazon/iTunes to find out how many times it’s been downloaded and watched. GET A CLUE! You say you’re listening to the fans, but pulling the show during Sweeps Week and hemming and hawing and saying you won’t make a decision about the show until the 13th episode is filmed doesn’t inspire confidence in your station.

  23. DollFan Says:

Been a Dollhouse fan since I landed on it by accident on episode 3 of the first season. Watched the first 2 online and have not missed an episode since. My biggest fustration is that Fox seems to have an issue with allowing any show to run on a weekly basis so that the shows fan base can grow. Either give me my Dollhouse weekly or how about a 2 hour mini series every few months. I need my fix on a regualr basis.

  24. Loren Says:

Have watched Dollhouse since day one and have chased it all over the schedule due to Fox’s insane scheduling maven. Does Fox understand that quirky shows need stability to build a base? My 80 year old mother loved Sarah Connor, to show what a wide following it had, and yet Fox went and really never gave it the chance it deserved. I hope that Fox doesn’t trash Dollhouse as well (otherwise there goes another hour when Fox loses me as a viewer).

  25. Diane Says:

can you please tell me when 24 will return for 2009???

  26. lawrence Says:

I just started watching dollhouse this season, but i went back and watched the first season within 1 week! i was so hooked i couldn’t space it out. there are no other shows like this right now so i don’t know what i would replace dollhouse with if it goes… definitely not another Fox show.

  27. Christina Says:

    Best show on television. period.

  28. Lisa Says:

I am really starting to see why everyone is switching from Fox…I am absolutely astonished that the few decent shows they have on are not on anymore! First Sarah Connor now Dollhouse? I will be devistated if they don’t bring this back and let it play out. This is why I watch the CW…they have shows that last!

  29. Valerie Says:

WHY… would FOX bother to put these shows on if its just for a few weeks?? Sarah Conner’s gone, now Dollhouse is MIA… I have to remember to not bother watching these shows in the first place, especially on FOX (ever notice that ABC is at least consistent in its offerings?)

  30. Wd Charmed Says:

Where is season two???.. Its been weeks of waiting already!! What is goiing on?

  31. kickshotkid Says:

Damn it fox this is ridiculous, you have a great show here. I have been a fan since episode 1. It may have started out kind of slow but it picked up pretty fast and there is so many different ways this show can go. I am amazed with the writing I mean this is a kind of show that can pull a eight to ten year fan base like Angel, Buffy, charmed because there is nothing else like this out there and the fan base it attracts like myself is so vast and will follow through the good and bad times. Fox you seriously need to give this show some slack. That is what it needs for the fans not different writing or cast it needs you to let it breathe so the fans can invest without worry. So do damn it and trust what we say and then sit back and rake in the revenue of your occult following hit show.

  32. MJBUNGA Says:

I have been a loyal fan Dollhouse since day one.
FOX - You have come to a screeching halt with your shows. You used to have the best schedule on the entire TV set, hands down. But you must have gotten ride of the people that actually know what is good TV. I must say – I am an avid DVR-er I record all my shows and watch them at my leisure, That’s the whole point of being able to record them. I can’t sit and wait on you people to decide if your going to air a show in any particular week. I also watch shows online if I didn’t get them recorded. I had to record them because my husband refused to watch anymore weekly shows with me, because he would start liking them and they would get canceled or like now – just now show up for weeks at a time.
For those of us who love the show and read the fan base info… we can not understand your logic for wanting to kill this show. What’s the scoop on why you HATE this show???

  33. bryan Says:

    Dear Fox Programming Tards:

You suck for many reasons, but especially for:

    1. Burying this show (one of your better offerings) on Friday evenings. You don’t hide an excellent show on a Friday night when its target audience is not even in front of the TV. Friday night is for RERUNS, MORONS.
    2. Canceling it when (surprise!) your dumb scheduling decision (See #1) didn’t turn out like you’d hoped. Can anyone at Fox even read? I’ll bet you are all sitting around defecating on yourselves.
    3. Wanda Sykes? C’MON! I think I speak for most of America when I say I’d rather cook my own genitals in a George Foreman grill than have to watch one nanosecond of her crapola.

Anyways, not like you’ll listen to anything folks care about. I suspect that at some point a hippopotamus with diarrhea will crap on all of you.

    Enjoy your suck network!
