Tap

This rhythmic dance is punctuated by the tapping sounds of the metal plates on the bottom of the performer's shoes. Once represented by the more fluid and balletic styles of such dancers as Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, modern tap is more improvisational and focuses more on leg and foot work than overall grace. In recent years, this "rhythm tap" was popularized by urban dancers like Savion Glover. "So You Think You Can Dance" has featured several performers who specialized in tap, including Season 6's Peter Sabasino, Phillip Attmore, and Bianca Revels. In Season 4, students from the Debbie Allen Dance Academy joined judge Nigel Lythgoe onstage for a tap routine to "Boogie Wonderland" by Earth, Wind & Fire.
