Popping

In popping, the dancer rapidly contracts and relaxes muscles to create jerking movements. Popping techniques range from upper-body moves like liquid, which has a water-like fluidity, to ticking, which is very choppy. Popping moves can be done in the legs and feet, too, with elements such as gliding, in which a dancer looks like he's sliding across a sheet of ice. Created in Fresno, California, by dancer Sam Solomon, the moves were originally performed by his group the Electric Boogaloos. Other common popping moves include the robot, the puppet, and miming. In Season 4, Robert Muraine and Phillip Chbeeb went head-to-head in a popping battle, which Muraine won by a 5-to-1 vote. Phillip later returned to SYTYCD as a contestant on Season 5.
