Lyrical dance got its name from the fact that the dance is inspired by the lyrics of the song accompanying the routine. Often combining elements of ballet, jazz, modern, and tap, the performance is meant to convey emotion not only through traditional dance moves but also with the complete expression of the face and gestures. The styles are said to come from '70s and '80s dance schools, where students with less formal training could express themselves through emoting and moving fluidly to the music without necessarily having perfect technique. As a result, the style is not generally performed in competitive settings and is more often reserved for dance recitals and school performances. Season 3's Jimmy Arguello came from the lyrical dance discipline.
