Dance Dictionary

Ballroom

This broad category can include most forms of social dancing, but it typically encompasses the partner dances used in either International or American competition. The subcategories for both are similar. International standard dances include the waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, foxtrot, and quickstep, while International Latin is made up of samba, cha-cha, rumba, paso doble, and jive. The American competitive dances are broken down into Smooth (waltz, tango, foxtrot, and Viennese waltz) and Rhythm (cha-cha, rumba, East Coast swing, bolero, and mambo). Other dances not featured in competitive dancing are generally placed in the ballroom category: these include merengue, salsa, Hustle, West Coast swing, and Lindy Hop. Many ballroom dancers have competed on the "So You Think You Can Dance" stage, including Season 2 winner Benji Schwimmer.
