Argentine Tango

This improvisational dance, which originated in Argentina, differs significantly from ballroom tango in embrace, posture, and steps. In Argentine tango the dancers' chests are closer than their hips in a closed embrace, while in the ballroom version dancers arch their backs away from each other. Argentine Tango combines various elements, including caminar (walk), cruce (cross), ochos (figures-of-eight), ganchos (leg hooks), giros (turns), voleos (soccer kicks), and quebradas (breaks). It's often performed on "So You Think You Can Dance," but a version by Chelsie Hightower and Joshua Allen in Season 4 garnered an Emmy nomination for the choreography by Dmitry Chaplin, a former Season 2 contestant.
