while you were out: “riley dawson”

In anticipation of our big return on Friday night, we’re going to do a series of catch-me-ups to bring you up to speed with where we last left our favorite characters…

Sweet, normal, hopeful — the typical high school girl. Though she first seemed as such to John, Riley was anything but normal. After earning his trust and admiration it was revealed that Riley was actually recruited by hard-nosed soldier Jesse in the future and traveled back to get close to John. But what’s her real motivation? Is she here for John or for Cameron? And are her feelings starting to become real?

Her life left hanging in the balance after an apparent suicide attempt, we last saw Riley bleeding on the floor of John’s bathroom. Previously she faced down T-888 Cromartie when he appeared at the Connor house, and when her romantic Mexican getaway with John turned dangerous she barely made it out alive. Now Cameron’s suspicious of Riley and Sarah considers her a liability. John still hasn’t told her the truth of his destiny nor has Riley yet confessed her ulterior motives. Is there a chance for this couple if she lives? Or was she doomed from the start?

  1. Riley seems like a character who was doomed from the start. I honestly can’t really see her surviving much longer. Either Jesse will take her out (for telling John the truth) or Cameron will (for putting Johns life in danger).

  2. Riley. I found her horrible in the beginning. she got in the way of John and Cameron. Until I learned her real backstory. She actually IS there to get in the way of John and Cameron! I got much more interested in her story… She is used by someone I loathe and do feel a bit sorry for her. Being in the present was so overwhelming, very nicely acted!

I am interested to see John, riley and Cameron being truthful about each other and to see what happens!

  3. I think Riley’s time is up. Saying that, I don’t mind if she pulls through. She doesn’t annoy me anywhere near as much as Jesse.

  4. She does seem doomed from the start, yes.

Despite so much negativity towards that character from many of the fans, I thought it was fantastic when they revealed she was from the future. The way the episodes were written and produced prior to that, it really caught me by surprise. And it made her character so much more interesting. Fun stuff.

  5. I like Riley. I find it disturbingly retarded that she receives much hate because people want John with Cameron.

  6. i never liked Riley… she was just kinda annoying to me!!!!!
:| I think its time for her to go lol but we shall seee!!!!
But yeah, she seemed to be doomed from the start and I’m sure when John finds out the truth he is not going to take it well…

  7. Please be doomed from the start :P

  8. Ha, Schmacky, you make me laugh! :) I have to say, the blatant hate comments get old after a while. I thought Riley got interesting when it was revealed in the last ep how they jumped from the future and how she’s not a hardened soldier like Jesse, just a tunnel rat trying to survive. That said, I don’t know if she’s going to last much longer when her secret’s out. Either Jesse, Cameron or Sarah might all be after her for trying to purposely influence John.

  9. I think that once Riley’s true purpose is exposed that Cameron will let her go. The decision will be made to kill her, but none of the humans will be able to pull the trigger. They give the job to Cameron and she says she killed Riley but as a sort of sin offering for Alison, she lets her go. Jesse is another story. She has to go. Derrick should be the one to kill her but I can see him begging Cameron to do the job instead.

  10. Ep. 13 will be the downfall of their relationship I heard…

  11. I wanna see Cameron drown Riley in a bowl of Tortoise soup!!!!

  12. I can not stand this character. Worst thing to happen to S2. I hope she’s gone by the end of the season and she better not be in S3 because I can’t take much more of this.

    Her story…predictable and boring.
She annoys me, I hate her attitude. There’s nothing positive I could say about her…except if she leaves.
Worst decision of S2. Don’t care about her, never have, never will.
She bores me. John being with her bores me even more. I actually fast forward anytime she’s on screen because my brain can’t stand it. The T:SCC story is not moving forward…its stalled with her.
And the second you take time away from Cameron…not good.

    Get rid of her asap.

  13. This character is incredible… people either hate her guts or are intrigued by her. She sure does generate a lot of discussion :) I do hope if she dies, it will be a meaningful death. But I would rather hope something surprising, like her becoming friends with Cameron and Sarah or something weird like that.

  14. If Cameron kills her just for getting in the way like some people wish. Her and John will never be on good terms again. That’s really not what you want people.

  15. A good conclusion for the character of Riley would be to get killed by John. She should try to obey Jesse orders.. managing to damage Cameron some way and almost killing Sarah, causing then John to kill her. That would fit perfectly with the character development of John Connor. It would make sense, it would be both dramatic and tragic, it would finally mean that John Connor on TSCC had to grow up and accept his destiny.

  16. Bigfan: You’ve got to be Dan Hitchman in disguise — right?

  18. chojin999 - are you serious? If killing Sarkissian has haunted John for over half a season, how much do you think killing Riley would? Someone who’s already been used and abused in horrible ways?

I think something needs to be reiterated here: Killing people is not John Connor’s destiny. Protecting them is. He doesn’t graduate to a higher level every time he makes a new kill. It’s been emphasized throughout the show that the people who die for the cause, whether directly or indireectly, upset and disturb both John and Sarah, because it is contrary to their purpose.

  19. Some people simply hate Riley because she is annoying. Cheri Westin from the first season was setup to be a love interest for John. Yet people didn’t hate Cheri. Her story was intriguing (and mysteriously dropped), but most important, she didn’t turn John Connor annoyingly emo.

  20. Riley is obviously deeply troubled, but who wouldn’t be after all they know. Sarah is right to an extent that she’s a liability, but Sarah or John don’t know that Riley is not who she thinks she is. I would think that Riley knows things that might help Sarah and John’s cause. There might still be hope for John and Riley if they both come clean with the truth. This suicide attempt might be it…MAYBE?
