josh friedman: don’t panic.

So Hadley, my Prime Minister of Most Current Media, has informed me that I’m to write a few words about the “scheduling thing.” My immediate response was: “Scheduling thing? What scheduling thing?” But now I understand that there seems to be a little bit of consternation out there in the Most Current Media regarding the announcement that we’ve removed the episode Alpine Fields from the current schedule.

As the great Douglas Adams once said: “Don’t Panic.”

We were informed last week that Fox wanted to run a two-hour Prison Break finale in the slot that would have been our mid-season finale, the episode Earthlings Welcome Here. In order to keep that episode our finale (as it was designed to be), we are shifting the mostly stand-alone Alpine Fields into the second half of our schedule. It is worth noting that we (TPTB@TSCC) had already shifted Alpine Fields one other time due to our own whims and inclinations, so if nothing else, the episode does pack light and knows better than to make friends or put down roots.

So never fear. Everything’s the same. Just a little different. Kinda like the future.

Peace
jf

12/1 UPDATE: How profound that JF is. Word came in late last week that FOX has decidedly gone back to the original plan/schedule and will now be airing Self Made Man tonight (12/1), Alpine Fields Monday 12/8, and Earthlings Welcome Here 12/15. Fear not, continuity-addicts!

  1. First, I love how you guys care enough about what the fans think to even read the comments.

Second, the fact that you actually respond directly speaks volumes about your commitment to us and the show.

    Thank you!

  2. Friday will not work for me. Sorry to say but I will be out with friends on fridays and the show will be DVRed… I believe that most of your audience (young males) will be out chasing tail as well… rethink this

  3. I very highly doubt that it’s their idea, Nathan. The last show that did well on Friday nights with FOX was, I believe, the X-Files.

  4. As far as the schedule goes, don’t announce upcoming episodes on a Friday. You seem to get contradicted on Saturday :).

It’s not a big deal really. So long as the Fall-Finale is strong and can hold people’s interest until February that’s all that matters.

  5. I’ll be in on Fridays with all my ladies… watching SCC!! Clubs dont get hoppin until after 10 anyway. :)

  6. I think we all just want a little assurance is all. We love the show and hate to hear rumors, nasty horrible rumors that put everyone on edge. I also love that the makers of the show care enough about its fans that they actually read these comments and take the time to reply to us in person. Kudos are in order.

I can truthfully say that I’m not a network TV person. I’m not kidding when I say that I only watch SCC and that’s it. Part of this is due to the fact that I get attached to things very easily, people, characters, etc. I get invested in them and far too often have been burned in the past, not by the show but by the networks pulling the plug too soon.

That said I think SCC has stabilized enough that it might be safe. I think it has a rough road ahead of it but now that there is consistent writing coming in post writers strike, the show’s characters are more developed, the story more focused, and it doesn’t seem to be losing anymore viewers; SCC could light up and take off.

Sure Friday is often considered the death slot, but if history is any indicator Friday is generally a good night for Sci-Fi shows so who knows what will happen. Way I see it if the got rot that was Enterprise (no offense to anyone who liked it but I did’nt) could slog away for however many seasons it did then surely SCC which is a far better show can.

  7. I just want to thank you guys so much for taking your time to address the schedule problem. I’ve been hearing all kinds of rumors lately and don’t know what’s going on..

So thank you again for thinking of your fans, it makes me proud to be a Tin-Miss :DD

  8. I wanted to thank you for paying such an attention to our opinion…

TSCC is such a great show, and as mentioned above, it has now the necessary depth to have a long life and that’s all we want…

Even in Belgium, where I come from, TSCC has gained reputation. And I truly believe that anyone who would watch episode 1 of season 2 with the “you have to understand, it wasn’t me” scene would become addicted for life to TSCC.

Keep on this fantastic job at delivering such a wonderful series.

  9. That’s too bad it is moving to Fridays, SCC was a great way to start of a week and end a Monday. The only good part about Friday night is that you don’t have to worry about what your going to do the next day, ’cause it’s the weekend. But now my Mondays are going to be incredibly boring. =(

  10. It is amazing to me that this show is not hyped more by Fox. The Terminator franchise is several decades long, and it has a major motion picture coming out that stars the same guy who set box office records with the latest Batman film…

I’m in marketing, and I don’t understand how they could botch such great crossover promotional opportunities. Every scifi flick that comes out (the latest vampire flick grossed over $70 mil when I checked on Sunday) should have T:SCC promo to create a solid fan base.

This show has something (and something of value) for every major demographic; action, drama, scifi, girls, women, techies, young, mature, etc. All that AND it’s well written. Almost as good as BSG…

Even though I am a complete T fan, I really didn’t buy the girlie T at first (other than her stealth capability) but Summer’s acting as a quirky non-human is so “there” - anyone REALLY paying attention to her deeds and comments would see her one-off-ness is just shy of “not quite right.” Even really quirky humans don’t act that way (says the dude from Berkeley)

This is a show that whould be paired with another strong show - such as 24. Fox only runs two shows per evening so this shouldn’t be too hard to do. Also, I’d get more into multi-media projects with interactive capability, such as using MySpace, 3G, and short eposidic “back stories” such as what NBC is doing with “Gemini Division” featuring Rosario Dawson. This kind of platform could go on for years, and the consumer wouldn’t mind if you imbed product branding into the story in order to cover the costs - like what Dodge Trucks is already doing.

We, as consumers might actually enjoy this aspect of our present day history - how morbidly interesting for us to appreciate the “toys” we enjoy now, knowing at some point they will all be blown away to dust - and all we’ll have to survive on is used, busted junk later we are taking for granted now. Makes a “recession” look like paradise!

T:SCC is thus a wonderful diversion from the problems of our everyday lives, and I look forward to seeing it - and I much prefer viewing it over the web rather than TV; where I have control as to when and where I indulge my pleasures. The paradigm of network TV is changing; T:SCC should investigate more as to how it can take advantage of this shift in viewing. The norm of the past 50 years is changing and in order for this show to go on a long run like “I Love Lucy” it nears to get ahead of the game not following behind short sighted dinosaurs in network broadcasting (look what they did with the original Star Trek show).

Bringing so many robots back to our peril can keep us on our toes watching for years to come. But I think it might be wise for the Conners to tell more people about what is coming and start building their resistance infrastucture now, rather than later. Don’t know we’d integrate that into the T3 story, but I for one really liked Arnold’s “Predetor” premise: really well trained and prepared people got their butts kicked despite their best efforts meeting their enemy head on. Of course we know they finally overcame. The outcome of the T series is also known. That is not what is intriguing; it is the journey, the “how” we overcome every effort by the other side to undermine and finish us. That there is the capability to set traps, hide moles, and plant supplies by manipulating time itself makes the stuggle all the more deadly and intriguing - for BOTH sides.

Why don’t you guys hold a writing contest for plot submissions by your fans? Bet there are some really good ideas floating out there - it’s OUR T-verse too!

  11. Thanks Josh and all the other great people that bring us T:SCC every monday night (and don’t worry, i’ll be watching on friday too) Its awesome to know that you guys actually care enough to address all the rumors that circulate.

Props to Chris (in comment before) get the fans involved. We want to delve into every facet of T:SCC that we can get our hands on. I’m in for the long haul. ROCK ON!

  12. Thanks Josh, for the “Don’t Panic” in large friendly letters.

The only thing I am really panicking about is what I going to do with myself during the two months while we wait for T:SCC to return :).

Thankfully I own the season 1 DVD and there is season 2 to date online.

I’m looking forward to the pairing of our beloved T:SCC with Joss Whedon’s Dolls House on Fridays.

I for one will be in front of the TV on friday evenings. Maybe this is because I have things to do early on Sat morning. But it is a rather Sarah Connor excuse - I have a kickboxing circuit and an aikido class!

  13. [...] but (and it goes without saying) far from least, Josh Friedman comments on the confusion about which TSCC episodes will air in Decemeber at the Official Blog. Filed under: Brian Austin Green, Cast interviews, Fan Art, Fan Videos, Fan [...]

  14. Thank you for this fantastic show.
I really love that TPTB care about the fans so much.

I have adored Shirley Manson ever since I discovered Garbage in 2004. I admit I was pretty sceptical when I heard she was going to be in a Terminator spin-off TV show (never seen any Terminator films and being a girl I guess Terminator seemed like any other male-orintated action franchise, not really of interest.) But I would watch Shirley Manson watch paint dry so decided to check out the first season of T:SCC and utterly loved it. Thank god for Shirley or I wouldn’t have ever discovered this amazing show.

Not being clued up on Terminator mythology I didn’t realise that the show would centre around strong, smart, beautiful women/female robots kicking ass. Amazing. Sarah Connor makes me feel empowered, Cameron makes me smile (and cry in the season 2 premiere), Cathrine Weaver manages simultaneously to seriously creep me out and make me laugh like a crazy person.

Parts that particularly stood out: Cameron’s alter-human history/relapse in Alison From Palmdale, the combat scene paired with Sarah reading from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in Goodbye To All That, the Weaver/Savannah/Psychologist interactions in The Tower is Tall, the ambush of Chromartie in Mr Ferguson, the turtle thing/Sarah’s dream seqences in Complications.

Kudos to Ms. Manson for widening my horizons and branching out from music, trying something new, improving her performance every week and being a pretty bloody amazing actor as well as musician.

  15. Well said Cris well said.

  16. Thanks for stopping by and addressing this. I hope it’s not a Cromartie heavy episode because I sure could use a stash before the break. :)

  17. just watched that 3 dot episode , ur really starting to find ur feet now that fox has given u a full series

    peter, england

  18. SKYNET?

Anyone else following the story that IBM Research and five leading universities are partnering to create computing systems that are expected to simulate and emulate the brain’s abilities for sensation, perception, action, interaction and cognition while rivaling its low power consumption and compact size. It’s funded by DARPA (think basements and black helicopters) and they’ve already done a successful recreation of a mammal’s cognitive brain patterns.

  19. One of my absolute favorite songs by Shirley Manson is “#1 Crush” (aka “I Would Die For You”)- it’s intense, dark and sexual. If there are any more “near death” scenes coming up with Cameron and John, give that song a listen before you decide on the soundtrack. AND the FBI/swimming pool scene with Johnny Cash was just terrific…..the music, the perspective (view from the bottom of the pool). I tell everyone about the show -
thanks for listening and CHECK OUT THE SONG!

  20. In a couple years the original airtime of a show will matter very little on the internet — being ethereal and all (bad physics pun).

Honestly, I download TSCC’s illegally in HD moments after their air only because I do not own a TV because ComCast sucks — if only I still lived in Cox-land.

How quickly a TV show can be streamed over the internet after the original airtime really matters.

Consider this, even though I download the show illegally because I refuse to pay for horrible television service during this economic recession I still watch the full episode many, many times -here- throughout the week.

Anyway, its not like every network executive around the country, over in BBC-land and throughout Asia didn’t think of this five years ago — close to real time streaming matters enough to these people to risk another writers guild strike.

Haha, anyway, I party when Uncle Sam says its party time — which usually isn’t Friday @ 21:00 =^_~.=

P.S. The X-Files was the last friday night Fox success –> and the chemistry of the TSCC smells very simular to the X-Files. Fan clubs focusing on Cameron & John getting together exist in droves on UseNet — snap, if the hackers of the world care about this as much as Fox and Dana then TSCC will benefit from many years of geeky immortality.

  21. Fridays huh? First I heard of it. It might be a good idea to move it away from Big Bang time slot, as many techie types may be in conflict. But Friday night could work, but we frequently watch Dr. Who that night, (later in the year) so I hope the time slot is compatible with seeing both. If not I will dvr it, or watch it online, as we have 3 in our house who are totaly addicted to this show.

Great acting, Glau is always a kick, mom - son struggle, I am surprised more viewers are not hooked into this show. When asking friends if they are watching, I find they are turned off before giving it a chance because it is not the same actors as the movie. (Hey he’s our govenor now, and kinda busy.)

It is the top show of the week for me, a must see, and I hope it continues on for a long time.

Watch out for those robots, because they are coming to get us all soon! (only slightly joking… :)

I have been looking around for posters to hang on my cubicle at work to help promote the show. There are a few pics online, but hopefully you can release a bigger variety. I have seen pics here on the website before, that are not here now. Put them all up. It can’t hurt, and website storage is cheap.

  22. I don’t think Fox or our local tv critic even understand T:SSC, especially its use of strong women. What a gem! Thanks for the promise of a future feast of Dillahunt in the challenging role of a spoiled child in its vulnerable infancy that will blow up the world. Cromartie had devolved with his mechanical obsessions (the snowglobe, the mousetrap) into a keystone termminator, a sad result of mind-body-head separation. Friday is sci-fi night if the audience discovers your girls.

  23. Thanks for the heads up Josh.

About that move to the Friday night: “Time slot of Doom”.
As a Browncoat (Firefly fan) I recall how Fox blamed the ratings on Friday nights for the cancellation of FF. Never mind that Fox pre-empted the series with MLB playoffs so casual fans never knew where to find it and at less than half a season of aired episodes never gave the series a chance at success.
History has shown the folly of that decision by the suits at Fox.
I’m hoping that pairing T:SCC with Josh Whedon’s new series *Doll House* on Friday night’s will lead to a happier result for both shows. Not since *Babylon-5* (thanks Doug) and the current version of BSG has a SF series developed such a complex well thought out story arc as well as giving we viewers believable characters true to the established history of the Terminator franchise. The entire cast and crew have created a vary enjoyable television experience and for that I thank you one and all. Happy Thanksgiving.

  24. I don’t understand how so many people who take such a great interest in a show that (for the most part) is about the future, can be living in the past.

    Who watches T.V. anymore?

I don’t care when you guys air it. I’ll watch it online with the rest of modern civilization.

Thank You for your continued work. This show has been a welcome addition to the Terminator universe.

  25. I’m panicking. Fox has so often shuffled a show into a friday nite slot so that after a few weeks of lackluster ratings, the network will announce it’s cancellation.

  26. It doesn’t matter to me what night TSSC is broadcast because I have never watched it on my TV. The only shows I watch are the ones I can see on my computer at my own convenience. In fact, I came to this show late, but caught up, and became addicted, due to the full episode player. Thanks FOX! Keep up the good work on this outstanding drama.

  27. First off, like most people here, let me say thank you for actually caring about your fans. Most creators of shows dont care as much as you (and all those who work on the show) seem too. Certaintly more then the FOX network does.
How can they not see what a brilliant show this is? The writing, the acting, the storylines? The subtle hints to something big? (Riley being there to force her way in between John and Cameron *by the way, a bunch of us at the cameronandjohn.com forums guessed something wasn’t right about her*)
TSCC is my favourite show right now, beating out other FOX shows such as House MD or Bones, Family Guy or Simpsons.
I wish FOX advertised TSCC more.
I will be staying in on Fridays in order to watch, although-sadly-Canada doesn’t count in ratings.
I’m hoping that the big finish will have to do with John finding out about Riley, her leaving and a nice/sweet end scene between John and Cameron.
I’ll be going crazy for those two months, watching and rewatching season one and season two. Good luck in getting a third season!

  28. Hello.

Thanks for thinking about fans of TSCC.

In Poland the show has a big audience. Hope they gonna buy second season cause it rox!

I would like to read soon that there’s gonna be a third season of TSCC…

    Keep Up The Good Work!

  29. This is my absolute favorite show since Buffy. I will watch it on whichever night it is on for as long as it’s on. Keep up the good work!

  30. Did anybody notice that iTunes is messing up the episode titles for The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

I buy each episode through iTunes because I love this show. However, they are messing up by labeling the episodes with the wrong titles. I almost bought the same episode twice thinking that a new one was already posted.

Would someone with authority bring this up with iTunes??

    Thanks… again… I love the show!!!

  31. Thank you, I love this show is my number one please make a third season

  32. “12/1 UPDATE: How profound that JF is. Word came in late last week that FOX has decidedly gone back to the original plan/schedule and will now be airing Self Made Man tonight (12/1), Alpine Fields Monday 12/8, and Earthlings Welcome Here 12/15. Fear not, continuity-addicts!”

you guys are making my ears bleed with all this schedual change! Oh well, the more TSCC the better!

  33. well is she going to be in the movie or is that tabo it be cool if she was

  34. TSCC is by far the best show on TV. as 24 fans from the very beginning my wife and i are of one mind that TSCC is an even better show. we watch it either on tv or the web without missing a week. just the thought of it being canceled is extremely depressing. it’s easily as good as the T movies.

like many of the posters, for the life of me i can’t understand why fox has done so little promo for the show recently. it’s hardly ever mentioned during the sunday games on fox, or most any times for that matter. and it’s true that all the scifi films that are coming out these days should have utilized the show as a vehicle for reaching their target audience.

i just hope that fox doesn’t lose sight of how great a show it has, and devotes the production and promotion resources to ensure it can find and sustain its audience. it would be a disaster for fox to cancel this show, as it is really the only good original show on tv right now, including cable.

  35. Hi.

I just stumbled across this place and thought I should add my 2-penneth worth.

This show is superb. For me, it’s rapidly approaching the “Battlestar Galactica” remake as taker of the “2nd-best sci-fi show of all time” crown. (It would take a lot of work for any show to beat “Babylon 5″ just for the sheer scope of intertwining plotlines and epicness of scale, though BG came close, and TSCC is snapping at its heels).

When I first started watching TSCC I was concerned that it as going to be like Smallville, Buffy or Beverly Hills 90210 but with Terminators, so I was glad when the emphasis shifted away from John Connor’s school experiences, but now, almost at the midseason break of season 2, I’ve been utterly blown
away by the way the plot has developed.

When I heard the rumour that TSCC might not be returning after the break, I started going into a decline! “Why??? Why do all the best shows get cancelled?!”
…so today when I discovered that you’re back in February… well, I’ve been almost jumping for joy!

I just thought I should let you know that you’ve got 2 true fans of the show living here in my house in England… I’m about to get a BluRay player, so although up to now I’ve had to download the show, I WILL be buying ALL OF IT on BluRay in the near future.

Thanks for many hours of great entertainment… long may it continue, and always remember the golden rules of good sci-fi… plot plot plot plot plot plot plot and more plot, and don’t ever try to con the true fans with cheap episodes designed to bring in new viewers. (like “Star Wars - The Phantom Menace” or Battlstar season 3… what was THAT all about?!) ;-)

Anyway, best regards, wishing you all the success in the world.

    This show ROCKS!

    !,,!,
