By my count this is only dream sequence 2.5, We need one every other episode or so.
I always watch it live (sadly lack of a nielsen box doesn’t help) and then rewatch in Hulu several times since I also lack a DVR.

Great great GREAT episode!!! I Loved the story of Derrick being used to teach machines how to interact with people by a traitor. I also loved the idea that he didn’t remember the ordeal because it may never have happened to him. Time Paradox!!! I don’t know what to think of Doc Sherman’s involvement yet. I don’t know if he’s an asset or a problem? Hmmm? As for John’s “intuition” into Ellison, he should have listened to Cameron. After all she can tell when people are lying its kind of what she does, duh John totally duh.
As for Cameron? More goodness more humanity and I say yeah! The writers are getting back to giving the character some soul again. When she tells John she feels sensations it’s more than that. You can see the wheels turning in her head almost like she is trying to feel something other than just the sensation. (Oh its gonna happen you know it) And did anyone notice she smiles an awful lot during this episode? I found that interesting for some reason. That and I always love to see Summer smile but I digress. Her curiosity about why people feel empathy, and do the things they do is refreshing and her explanation that “We’re not built to be cruel” is poignant because it leads to the odd but relatable scene where she turns Ellison back onto his stomach a nod to when Sarah turns a turtle back into its stomach at the beginning. Obviously Cameron was trying (awkwardly so but still) to show empathy for someone who was hurt, and you can tell that John is like What is going on with her? Of course it doesn’t help that she was the one who thrashed Ellison in the first place. Ooops… It’s the thought that counts right?
In any case great episode, great show, keep up the good work. Till next Monday I patiently wait.
good episode… but i hope you all tread carefully with the “Derek’s alternate future” idea. It’s tiptoeing the fine line between “clever” and “cop out”.
The writing this season compared to last season is like apples and oranges. There is way more depth this year. I’m loving it.
I can’t tell whether Cam is growing more or if she has just observed how John responds to Riley and realizes he is stressed and wants to calm him by saying things like, “Don’t worry about it”, and then smiling.
I would say Cameron is simply using her programming to recognize John’s emotional state and then attempting to comfort him by mimicking (and extrapolating upon) the behavior she’s witnessed in humans so far. It arouses an itneresting question in that would one have to feel emotions to perform actions or do certain actions make you feel emotions? Is she doing it to see what reaction she gets from others or as a self-experiment?
I love how she smiles, she is acting more human. I love the line ” Yep one for us cyborgs”
In response to John.
I agree, the writing is different but I like both types. I do think a few episodes did show signs of suffering from the lay over of the writers strike last year which hurt the series in the ratings, but thank heavens thats over and the shows depth is back on track and feels more reliable/well told again.
It was a good episode and I enjoyed it, but I guess I am the only one that was a little creeped out by Cameron this episode. Can’t put my finger on it, just creeped out by her.
Also on the whole turning Ellison over bit, it seemed a bit sadistic to me. I mean she turned him off of his back onto his stomach, onto broken glass which he was lying on his back. Ow. Before that he would only have had a sore back, now he has a sore back and stomach.
Finally, I did like that John took care of Sarah and Cameron helped. That was tight.
So Ellison stole Cromartie’s body because he thinks Weaver will help him learn how to defeat the robots whereas the Connors want to destroy all evidence and prevent Skynet and Judgement Day from happening. With the apparently open door from the future (how many people/machines have transported now?) surely they are fighting a losing battle against prevention. Ah well, heart of the series I guess, their struggle.
Why didn’t Derek and Jesse just kill young Fisher? The illogical way they let him live and consequently grow up to fulfil his destiny of helping the machines was just daft. We’ve seen Derek kill Andy Goode and others without qualms. They really had no good reason to let him live!!
No need to remind me. I ALWAYS watch the episode at least twice. I have since season 1. The writing and acting on this show really rewards my attention.
(I use the episode “Gnothi Seauton” to introduce my students to story analysis.)
Cath,
Derek was just about to kill young Fischer when Jesse interrupted him by shooting old Fischer. He deferred to her wish to let the innocent young man live, as he defers to Sarah. I assume her reasoning was that young Fischer was not a monster and, now that he has knowledge of future events, will try not to become one. A choice vs. fate thing. They had no way of knowing old Fischer had already sentenced him to life in prison.
