Last week’s “Look Closer” facts proved popular, so here’s some insider info on last night’s The Mousetrap straight from the, er, horse’s mouth.

Our opening montage was accompanied by the song “Safe Within Your Arms” by Greg Garing. It was shot on location in Palmdale (about an hour and a half outside of Los Angeles) and you should recognize two of the locations. The gas station where Cromartie kidnaps Michelle is actually the same gas station where they shot Sarah at the end of the first Terminator film. Thomas spills more details on this location in this week’s official podcast.

And another special location this week? How about the fruit stand where Charley Dixon waited for Sarah and Derek? It’s a fictional fruit stand right next to a small little “church” set — most prominently remembered for the massive shootout in the film Kill Bill. It’s not actually used as a real church.

George Laszlo’s Beast Wizard VII was inspired by the cult film The Beastmaster, starring Marc Singer and Rip Torn. Our scenes were shot in that infamous Warner Bros. jungle which we’ve shot for, amongst other things, Nicaragua in Queen’s Gambit and will be featured prominently in the fifth episode this season.

John not only faced down Cromartie on the Santa Monica Pier, he was also shocked by a big earthquake! Our production day was interrupted by the great quake back at the end of July. Just another day trying to stop the robots…

Did you notice Catherine Weaver during her meeting with Ellison? She was drinking a glass of water. Why would a Terminator drink? Was in a rouse or does this T-1001 actually need to hydrate?

The Mousetrap was actually the fifth episode we shot this season in order to accommodate the tough production schedule and various locations. We even celebrated Summer’s birthday with a gigantic chocolate cake on the day Cameron stalked John and Riley on the promenade.

Next week’s epic episode brings us closer to the cyborg we know as Cameron. But what was she designed for? Who exactly is she? What is she? Allison from Palmdale airs next Monday at 8PM/7PMc on FOX.

john wirth: fittingly resplendent.

On the day after Ginia Bellafante declared our show “resplendently grim” in her piece in the New York Times, I am reminded, as I bask in the glow of such a compliment, of how I came up with the title for tonight’s episode. I knew that Cromartie was going to build a trap, and that the trap would probably involve an explosive device of some kind, and so I began to wonder how he would detonate such a device. Then I wondered how, in the real world, somebody would detonate a homemade bomb if they needed to, and that led me to wondering who in the real world would need to and that got me involved in an internet excursion of sites dedicated to IEDs (for those of you not in the know – Improvised Explosive Devices), a wickedly effective tool of terrorists, militias, freedom fighters, and assholes around the world.

Apparently, the common everyday mousetrap is the preferred method of detonation for such contraptions. It is beyond cheap, and beyond effective in its simplicity. It only takes thirty-eight thousandths of a second to deploy, and there it is, on numerous websites for all the world to see.

It seemed a fitting way for a Terminator to do his business. Mindless and heartless as he is, there is something fittingly resplendent in the fact that he should turn this terrible tool on us humans. Oh, wait, we’re already doing it to each other. Never mind. Enjoy the show!

Before you see tonight’s episode, look a little further — where does the title The Mousetrap come from? Well, here’s a bit of history on mousetraps to get you started:

James Henry Atkinson was the British inventor who in 1897 invented the prototype mousetrap called the “Little Nipper”. The Little Nipper is the classic snapping mousetrap that we are all familiar with that has the small flat wooden base, the spring trap, and the wire fastenings. The Little Nipper slams shut in 38,000s of a second and that record has never been beaten. This is the design that has prevailed until today. This mousetrap has captured a sixty percent share of the British mousetrap market alone, and an estimated equal share of the international market.

James Atkinson sold his mousetrap patent in 1913 for 1,000 pounds to Procter, the company that has been manufacturing the “Little Nipper” ever since, and has even erected a 150-exhibit mousetrap museum in their factory headquarters.

American, John Mast of Lititz, Pennsylvania received a patent on his similar snap-trap mousetrap in 1899. And Austin Kness had an idea for a better mousetrap back in the 1920s. The Kness Ketch-All Multiple Catch mousetrap doesn’t use bait. It catches mice alive and can catch several before it needs to be reset.

Did you know that the Patent Office has issued over 4400 mousetrap patents, however, only about twenty of those patents have made any money? Catch a few of the different designs for mousetraps in our mousetrap gallery.
