RESTRAINING ORDER

An order issued by the civil court forbidding certain actions. It is usually used to stop contact between persons. A restraining order is requested by the victim of threats or violence, and can also be requested by someone connected to the victim, like a family member. The restraining order is temporary. Violation of a restraining order may constitute contempt of court. In certain cases, it may be an additional crime for which the offender may be arrested.
